Next Time . . .

. . . you see a whacked-out meme on FB (or elsewhere on the web), spouting hate or (what seem to be) extremely aggravating 'facts' about a population of which you know very little (or possibly nothing), PLEASE do not post it (or re-tweet, or email all your friends). Instead, do some research.
(One option is https://www.snopes.com/ - but I would recommend looking at two or three in addition). You may just find that the meme that so stirred your emotions actually contained false information. Plus, you may actually learn something.

Fascinating. . .

. . . or just bull puckey? . . .

(source http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/im-with-the-band-study-of-rock-star-deaths-finds-solo-artists-at-greater-risk-than-groups/2012/12/20/9d556fbe-4aa6-11e2-8758-b64a2997a921_story.html)

". . .rock and pop musicians are more likely to die prematurely than the general population, and finds that solo artists are twice as likely to die young as members of bands.

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University and Britain’s Health Department studied 1,489 rock, pop, punk, R&B, rap, electronica and New Age stars who became famous between 1956 and 2006 — from Elvis Presley to the Arctic Monkeys. They found that 137 of the stars, or 9.2 percent, had died, representing “higher levels of mortality than demographically matched individuals in the general population.”. . . "

How about middle-aged, full-time employed, married (with grown children)men who are solo eclectic jazz pianists and also members of rock/prog/folk/jazz-trios struggling to market both music while living the suburban dream and contemplating possible retirement (from the 'non'-music occupation) in another five-to-ten years?

(and while we're on the topic of useless, inconsequential studies, is coffee actually good for me or NOT?!!!)

. . . and it's getting blacker. . .

Very soon, a tremendous number of the earth's population will observe a 'celebration' of the birth of a possibly historical Palestinian Jew over 2,000 years ago, to whom the origin of a mega-religious institution (and philosophy) is attributed.  This person, whether truly historical or not,  totally human or some combination of spiritual, human, super-human, affected all humanity in the civilized (or semi-civilized) world that followed in some way or another.

What better way to celebrate this occasion than to . . . go shopping?????!!!!!!

(from NBC News.com)
". . . To those who spend the Friday following Thanksgiving doing things like spending time with family, or working, or volunteering, or attempting to construct the world's greatest turkey leftover sandwich, Black Friday devotees are a mystery. Yes, an estimated 147 million Americans plan to go shopping sometime this weekend, according the National Retail Federation. But who are these people, what's the psychology driving them to rise before dawn in pursuit of a deal -- and have they really never heard of online shopping?

"The deals are part of it, but I don't think it's the bigger piece of it," says Jane Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. "This is the family ritual, as much as eating turkey and dressing is -- it's going shopping as the start of the holiday season together.". . . "

"The First Amendment. . .

. . .DOES NOT bar religion from the public square and from government in general. Under the First Amendment, the resulting separation of Church and State puts restrictions on government but does not put restrictions on religion. . ."

(reaction to a recent blog by Howard Bess. See bottom)
The good Reverend seems to hit it on the head on a regular basis. He says that the current crop of republican presidential candidates, as well as the media 'reporting' on them, all miss the boat on their interpretation of the First Amendment. He would like to know how the religion of the candidates informs their views and intentions with regard to the following issues. "As president, would the candidate pursue the teachings of his religion?"

WAR AND PEACE - religions generally favor a path toward peace

POPULATION CONTROL, BIRTH CONTROL, AND ABORTION SERVICES - how long will the earth be able to sustain the needs of this huge (and growing) population so highly encouraged by their right to life 'philosophy'?

FULL RIGHTS FOR GAY, LESBIAN, TRANSGENDERED AND BISEXUAL PERSONS - many/most organized religions do not favor these just and necessary rights

PRESERVATION OF THE INTEGRITY OF THE WORLD’S ENVIRONMENT - what will the candidate do when scientific knowledge directly confronts the teachings of his religion?

PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION - parochial schools have been known to practice discrimination

PROVISION FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE - entitlements and being 'thy brother's keeper'

The Rev. Howard Bess is a retired American Baptist minister, who lives in Palmer, Alaska. His email address is HYPERLINK "mailto:hdbss@mtaonline.net" hdbss@mtaonline.net

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING HIM!

What a yahu. . .

. . . I mean- YAHOO!! (Freudian slip)

How can a person make one statement, such as maybe ". . . yes, we want peace. . . " then spend the remainder of their 'air' time listing the reasons that they refuse to help bring that peace about in any concrete, meaningful way?

"I say to President Abbas 'Tear up your pact with Hamas and sit down and negotiate, make peace with the Jewish state. "The Palestinian attempt to impose a settlement through the United Nations will not bring peace. It should be forcefully opposed by all those who want to see this conflict end. . . " The man promised “painful” Israeli concessions in exchange for peace but then proceeded to outline a tough negotiating stance. An aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called the proposals a “declaration of war against the Palestinians.”

Unfortunately, our U.S. legislators found his hypocritical words applauseworthy. What a shame! Hopefully the world will get this man's number soon. We can only hope.

Not very 'musical' you say? What better way to promote peace than through the universal language of music. . .
