Informed . . .

(from https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/2018-01-30/information-overload-exhausting-americans-survey-says)
"A 2018 Gallup survey in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a Miami-based non-profit that supports journalism, reports that 58 percent of respondents say staying well informed is difficult, while only 38 percent say they believe it's easy. . . "We are seeing people pulling back into their own little domains," Busteed says. "Seven out of of 10 Americans share articles only with people that they feel are like-minded. We have all these different sources of information out there but people are retrenching into their own social networks.". . . When it comes to who is responsible for ensuring Americans do get access to an accurate and politically balanced understanding of the news, the public is divided: 48 percent say the news media should be up for this task, while same percentage say the responsibility rests with individuals. . ."

Informed???

. . . as always . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-gop-confident-it-can-avert-shutdown-senate-far-sure-n838561)
". . . The measure . . . (was to). . . extend the low-income children’s health insurance program for six years while delaying some key Obamacare taxes for two years. But the president's tweet (just before the vote) called that effort into question when he said a CHIP extension should not be part of a short-term bill.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension!

When asked about the president's tweet Thursday morning, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said, "I don’t know whether it’s clear to the president that what we’re trying to do is reauthorize CHIP long term, not just 30 days. I would understand his concern about doing it just 30 days, but we’re trying to do a long term extension for CHIP." . . . The White House later clarified the president's tweet, saying that he does support the House bill. . .

Read . . .

. . . ALL you can before you vote. . .

(from https://books.google.com/books?id=Q6u5ADXTpR4C&pg=PA162&lpg=PA162&dq=elections+decided+by+the+media&source=bl&ots=WkzXDdA4WQ&sig=eo8GUygJ8hMV_MS4KcOjgdBHfEs&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBWoVChMIrZrX5r3BxwIVzGg-Ch3usgGS#v=onepage&q=elections%20decided%20by%20the%20media&f=false)
". . . 'Floating Voters' . . . who are less politically active, informed, and partisan . . . (have) become the focus of a number of studies. Findings, however, have been inconsistent on this point. Converse (1962) contended that uninvolved voters, who are likely to be weak partisans, have the potential to be greatly influenced by short-term electoral forces, particularly information flow, provided that the messages reach them. . . Information gained from the mass media tends to reinforce partisan stability, even among less involved voters. . . Voters who have decided early . . . will be more likely to find that the media satisfy their campaign involvement needs. . . "

Two Things . . .

1.  The complicity of our sitting president in war crimes and in a disregard for human life through a  failure to allow the judicial system to provide justice to afflicted parties
2.  The failure of our news organizations to keep us truly informed

(from http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/08/22/1233110/-DOJ-Asks-Court-to-Grant-Immunity-to-Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-for-Iraq-War# by by David Harris Gershon)
A federal case in San Francisco, filed by an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, alleges that President Bush and much of his administration should be tried for violating international law in the execution of the Iraq War.

However, the Obama administration's Department of Justice has moved to request that such Bush-era officials, and the former President, be shielded with immunity.

    Per Inder Comar:
In court papers filed today, the United States Department of Justice requested that George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz be granted     procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law.

Plaintiff Sundus Shaker Saleh, an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, filed a complaint in March 2013 in San Francisco federal court alleging that the planning and waging of the war constituted a “crime of aggression” against Iraq, a legal theory that was used by the Nuremberg Tribunal to convict Nazi war criminals after World War II.

Saleh's suit alleges that President Bush and his administration falsified pretenses for the war, failed to get international approval, and began planning for the possibility of an invasion before 2000.

However, the Obama administration would like to shield the ex-President and his officials from such prosecution, arguing that everything done was performed within the scope of their various governmental roles.

Meanwhile, Bradley Manning – now Chelsea Manning – will be spending 35 years in prison for exposing U.S. war crimes.

Crimes Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their ilk helped choreograph.

Unsolicited . . .

. . . advice to the media. . .

(from "It's Even Worse Than It Looks;  How The American Constitutional System Collided With The New Politics of Extremism" by Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein)
". . . Help your readers, listeners, and viewers recognize and understand asymmetric polarization.  The [political] Parties are different in many important respects. . . Document those differences, report on them, and consider the implications of those differences for ordinary citizens.

A balanced treatment of an unbalanced phenomenon is a distortion of reality and a disservice to your consumers. . . media should report the truth.  Both sides in politics are no more necessarily equally responsible than a hit-and-run driver and a victim; reporters don't treat them as equivalent, and neither should they reflexively treat the parties that way. . . don't seek professional safety through the unfiltered presentation of opposing views.  What's the real story?  Who's telling the truth? Who is taking hostages at what risks and to what ends?

Fact checks are important contributions to contemporary journalism.  What treat them all as equally important and bury them in the back pages?  Move them into the body of news stories and onto the lead, and repeat them when politicians continue to repeat falsities despite the fact check.

Stop lending legitimacy to Senate filibusters by treating a sixty-vote hurdle as routine.  The framers certainly didn't intend that.  Your consumers should be better informed of the costs associated with it.  Report individual senators' abusive use of holds and clearly identify every time a minority party uses a filibuster to kill a bill or nomination with majority support.  Do not say or write that Congress of the Senate killed a bill or stopped a nomination if a majority in both houses voted for the bill or the individual-say or write the truth, that the bill or person was blocked despite majority support, by the use of a filibuster.  This is especially true, as with the example of the DISCLOSE Act on campaign finance, when all the members of one party (in that case, fifty-nine) support a bill and all the members of the minority vote against.  It was not Congress that blocked disclosure-it was one political party via the filibuster.

Your highest priority should be to clarify the choices voters face and the likely consequences of those choices after the election.  How would they govern?  What could they accomplish?  What differences can people expect from a unified Republican or Democratic government or one divided between the parties? The "how would they govern?" story is always important, but more so now than ever. . . "
