Block . . .

Here, nothing but time
On my dirty hands
To no avail
Try as hard I might
Pouring every ounce
Of my energy into a song
The only thing I can do for you
Something is wrong
Barely a note breaking through
hardly a clue
Dry as a well
Arid as the desert
I seem to be When will it end?
We will see

What, you’re asking,
Is there to be concerned about
In this anomaly?
Sure this kind of thing
Happens all the time
To all practitioners of
Rhythmic expression
Propelling souls into space; flying
Evoking so many emotions within
Out of the din
But in spite of this
I will persevere
In my endless quest
For voice to express
What I feel

Thin Air . . .

When I woke up today I had all that I want
Everything that I did brought desired results
How could this be? All the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

But of course I am wrong. How could I understand
When my society tells me how tall I stand?
Then I take it inside and wait for life’s kiss
Which is sure to arrive ‘cause I’m riding my bliss.

What did I do? The world holds me up
Invisible hands grant the nourishing cup
Have I found a way that has always been there?
It seems to me it came out of thin air.

The child waking up brings the old crone to tears
Pushing through my disguise see the tips of my ears
How could this be all the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

When I blindly reach out to what I cannot see
Grace reappears and it rescues me
I’m not what I feel, I’m not what you think
I’m only what is and what isn’t in sync.

Complain . . .

. . . ME?!!!

I know I'm whining again, but I must admit, I've had it up to HERE with these cold, cold temperatures. I'ts just plain unpleasant to have cold hands with cracked fingers all the time. Any liquid out of doors is frozen, there's either wind or snow in the five-day forecast and one of the most pleasant things I do is sleep under multiple blankets and comforters.

At the corner of 9th and Ring in Milwaukee, there’s a man with the power to impact young lives forever. “He talked mostly about becoming a man,” says Freddie Outlaw. Andre Ellis has a garden, and every Saturday, he gathers black boys and puts them to work. “It keeps me out of trouble. It makes me feel great. Just being in a place to help people clean up the community,” says 14-year-old Freddie Outlaw. From 8:00 o’clock a.m. until noon, the kids pick up trash from their streets and plant vegetables in the garden. Ellis watches over them and keeps them in line. “Some of the things that Mr. Andre has taught us responsibility. If we`re not here on time, we get sent home,” says 14-year-old Trevione Jones. For many kids, he’s the closest thing they have to a father. “When you have a group of 47 kids, and you say, how many of you don`t know your father and 38 of them raise your hands,” says Andre Ellis.

The kids do get compensated for their efforts, $20 dollars each. All of the money for the program is donated to Ellis, but it’s clear that the experience is priceless. “I was a troublemaker. I was fighting people on the block. He kept me from going to jail and stuff,” says Jermaine Stevens. A group of boys, who now know what it takes to be a man.

Ellis’s program will wrap up in mid August, but he isn’t abandoning the kids once they head back to school. Phase two includes taking what’s learned in the classroom, and continuing that education after school, and on the weekends.
