Sound . . .

. . . like some U.S. president that has been in the news lately?

(from The Three Christs of Ypsilanti by Milton Rokeach)
". . . As Anna Freud writes:  This mechanism belongs to a normal phase in the development of the infantile ego, but, if it recurs in later life, it indicates and advanced stage of psychic disease....Under the influence of shock ... it denies the facts and substitutes for the unbearable reality some agreeable delusion. . ."

Just . . .

. . . my ego . . .

Sometimes I can get my point across
And I do it rather well
You can see
What I think
About me

It's just my ego
It gets the best of me
It's just my ego

It's just my ego
It just won't let me be
It just won't let me be alone

It's not one of my most redeeming qualities
Still though it serves me rather well sometimes
It won't be easy to just let it go
It's just my ego

I take such great pride in what I do
Everyone should take some too
Don't you think
Pride in me
Not in you

There's a fine distinction between confidence and pride
There's a fine distinction that I'll never know
Cloaked with some discretion you emerge from the inside
I emerge in all my glory
What is there to hide

Mother said that I would never make
Any friends if I don't see
What I'm like
If I don't lose some pride

Merciless . . .

When you think that you're wronged
And no justice is found
Your pride has been bruised
And your ego's been drowned

You're bursting with anger
Under so much duress
In your retaliation
You will be merciless . . .

Dear . . .

. . . Donald . . .
As much as I hate to admit it, you and I are not that much different.  No, I don't mean I am a racist, misogynist or pathological liar with an ego as big as all outdoors.  What I mean is that I, too, crave attention.  I would absolutely love to have millions of people loving my music, purchasing all my releases and hiring me to play all my very own original music for them, day and night. all the time. So when it comes to craving attention, Don, I truly 'get it.' The real difference between you and me is that, I DON'T PRETEND TO BE QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT.

Moderation. . .

. . . in all things. . .

I've always thought that ego and self-confidence were pretty much the same thing.  And as in all other things, moderation must be practiced in implementing either.

My music gives me pause in this regard quite frequently.  Truth is, my self-confidence increases daily and reassures me that I am doing what I am supposed to with regard to the music.

In fact, I envy young, creative people (musicians in particular) who have a self-confidence that I could never have dreamed of at their age.  That self-confidence is the fuel that will help the truly talented (and even the marginally-talented who possess it) achieve success.

In my case, I have finally developed a sufficient amount of self-confidence after years of honing my skills.  So one complements the other;  the skills combined with the confidence enable me to perform. In the case of the younger ones mentioned above, their inverse amounts of self-confidence and skills will help them persevere, while those skills they need are developed.

The difference between us is, had I possessed quantities of both of these qualities earlier, I would have had more time to develop my market.

But still I am conscious of allowing the confidence to become too great, in which case the delicate balance would surely be ruined.

All things in moderation.
Know what I mean?

My Ego. . .

. . . I take such great pride in what I do. I think you should take some too. I believe. Pride in me. Not in you. It's just my ego. It gets the best of me. It's just my ego. It's just my ego. It just won't let me be. It just won't let me be alone. It's not one of my more redeeming qualities. Still though, it serves me rather well sometimes. It won't be easy to just let it go though, it's just my ego.

Sometimes I can get my point across and I do it rather well. Don't you think? It's a gift. You can tell. It's just my ego. It's just my ego. It just won't let me be. It just won't let me be alone. It's not one of my more redeeming qualities. Still though, it serves me rather well sometimes. It won't be easy to just let it go though, it's just my ego.

There's a fine distinction between confidence and pride. There's a fine distinction that I'll never know. Cloaked with some discretion you emerge from the inside. I emerge in all my glory. What is there to hide?

Mother said that I would never make any friends if I don't see what I'm like; if I don't lost some pride. It's just my ego. It's just my ego. It just won't let me be. It just won't let me be alone. It's not one of my more redeeming qualities. Still though, it serves me rather well sometimes. It won't be easy to just let it go though, it's just my ego.

The Roar of the Greaspaint. . .

. . . the smell of the crowd.

Yeah, that taste of public attention, appreciation, the thrill, the communication, the connection between performer and audience cannot be underestimated. It's not ego. It is a need. Like a drug. The accordion band practice refined my experience and perception of the performer/audience relationship.

And after several years of accordion band practice sessions, which were really low-calibre concerts, I'm not quite sure what inspired or motivated me since nothing clear remains in my memory of the motivation, I wrote my first original composition.
