On occasion when I'm alone, driving, waiting or otherwise alone with my thoughts, I find myself thinking about when my children were young and those memories conjure up a multitude of feelings and emotions. All of the sentimental (some more melodramatic than others) graduation ceremonies marking their progress through various stages of their young education, the birthday celebrations and the special occasions like the Sesame Street stage presentation or the circus. Some are thoroughly joyous - like those little faces on a Christmas morning when that day held such faithful anticipation. Some are just satisfyingly pleasant - like the daily drive to the daycare center when one rapscallion in the back seat munched his dry Cheerios from a plastic sandwich bag bathing the entire interior of the car in an oaty, fresh-baked goods aroma. Or even a helplessly alarming panic I experienced when all three of them (and one buddy) were in an automobile accident and called me at the office to inform me of the event. (No serious injuries fortunately.)
I remember equally well, when each of them reached the age of 'non-childhood' and no longer needed to relate the gory details of their schoolday, homework assignment or friend's attitude on a particular day and, although still willing to offer a hug, no longer required one from me on such a regular basis.
In fact, their rapidly maturing bodies no longer desired the intimate hug/cuddle/squeeze or whatever that was so meaningful (mutually) in the past. I missed that. But I understood and I got over it.
But that's okay. I loved every minute of it. Sometimes there were no other deep thoughts or enlightening perspectives but I was so totally absorbed in the moment that nothing else mattered. And you know, nothing else really did. But that, like all other things, passed and these fine young individuals matured and became wonderful young men.
And though I no longer need to drive anyone to daycare in a Cheerios-saturated automobile, I am still as committed as ever to the well-being of these guys, although my involvement now takes very different forms, because I truly and honestly believe that my job, my goal, my destiny, my highest and greatest purpose (NO EXCEPTIONS) is to ensure that these guys are happy, contented adult individuals. Any and everything else beyond that is just . . . gravy!

Many of its advocates put it like this: football programs generate so much revenue for the university, while also supporting “non-revenue” sports like golf and swimming from its own budgetary excess, that college football is its own justification for the large team budgets and coaches’ salaries. Because alumni are much more generous during years when football teams win, academic programming benefits as well. Indeed, so this standard narrative goes, both the jump in admissions applications and the wider “public relations” effect that accompanies a football program cause munificent ripples throughout a university’s stream of income. Many even maintain that football helps to subsidize the obscure and non-remunerative activities of colleges—research into the reproductive biology of ducks and eighteenth-century German poetry, for example. Without a football program, scholarship money would plummet and applicants would flock elsewhere in search of universities with better “student life” opportunities. . .

The Glory and Scandal of Big-Time College Football (2013), figures from
the 2010-11 academic year show that only 22 of the 120 top-tier football
programs broke even or made a profit. That means that while these
big-time teams generate millions of dollars of revenue, the cost of
running such programs usually exceeds that revenue. To put that more
starkly, even within the so-called top tier, 82% of college football
teams actually take away money from the university’s budget, rather than
generate net revenue. Thus, the myth that college football generates revenue for universities is a lie 82% of the time among the highest grossing “tier” of teams."

. . . occurred during what would have been my senior year of high school if I hadn't waived my 12th year to begin college early. Further, if I hadn't waived my 12th year, my introduction to jazz would have occurred much differently and most certainly much later.
In addition to sheer boredom with the high-school routine, the impetus for my attending the (then named) Community College of Baltimore was the fact that they had a radio station; as a career in broadcasting was precisely what I had in mind for my future at the time.
The station, which began as a student education facility, was quickly becoming a public radio force of some potency. Soon to be capable of broadcasting a signal of 50,000 watts, the facility was manned by a combination of media professionals, technical experts and a host of students. The format at the time encompassed a variety of programming including talk, community service, ethnic, rock, classical, broadway and showtunes and . . . jazz. My first concentrated and serious exposure to jazz occurred working at WBJC-FM radio about forty years ago.
The jazz included Gato Barbieri, Chuck Mangione, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Lucky Thompson, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Lennie Tristano, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, Sonny Stitt, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie and many, many more and (oh yes) . . . Charlie Parker.

On this coming Thanksgiving holiday, I would be eternally grateful if our government-run education camps would teach the next generation of Americans the true story of Plymouth Rock rather than the romanticized fairy tale version.
Ten years ago I read for the first time Matthew Givens’ column titled, “Thanksgiving: America’s Lesson on Why Socialism Doesn’t Work.” And I’ve been reading it to my home schooled kids every Thanksgiving ever since.
“When the colonists first landed” at Plymouth Rock in 1620, Givens wrote, “they signed something called the Mayflower Compact. Most of us have heard this document praised as an early social contract helping different people live together. What most of us never learned was that it was also an experiment in socialism.”
An experiment that went horribly wrong, big time.
The Mayflower Compact required that all the colonists donate all the benefits derived from their work — farming, fishing, clothing, etc. — into the “common stock” and only take out what they actually needed. You know: From each according to ability; to each according to need.
Well, as the story was told by then-Gov. William Bradford, the young men of the colony became unhappy campers about being forced to “spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children.” And since the non-producers got the same amount of goodies from the common stock as producers, the producers simply stopped producing.
As such, “the amount of food produced was never adequate.” Thus the inadequate harvests of 1621 and 1622 did, in fact, lead to famine, malnutrition and starvation among the Pilgrims.
But it wasn’t the Indians teaching them how to farm that ultimately rescued the colonists from their plight. What did? Old-fashioned American capitalism!
“In 1623,” Givens explains, “Bradford ‘gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit.”
The result?
“By 1624, the colony was producing so much food that it began exporting corn.”
Vunderbar!
“Thanksgiving,” Givens concludes, “far from being the simple and uninspiring story of a group of people learning how to farm, is actually a celebration of what has made America itself great.
It is the story of people working together by working for themselves first, and in so doing, improving the standard of living for everyone.”
Amen and hallelujah!
So as you sit around the Thanksgiving table this year with family and friends munching on turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie, pause to reflect on the true meaning of this quintessential American holiday just as we should pause to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas each year; that socialism is bad, even when slick-talking community organizers from Chicago try to peddle it as “fairness.”

". . . Representative Virginia Foxx (R - N.C.) expressed either tough love or ambivalence toward students who find themselves deep in debt, depending on who you ask.
Foxx, who is chairwoman of the house Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, said on the Gordon Liddy Radio Show that it took her seven years to finish school. She added that over those seven years, she borrowed nothing.
"I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there's no reason for that," Foxx continued. "We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that. I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.' You don't sit on your butt and have it dumped in your lap."
The Bronx native worked as one of her high school’s janitors before she enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She graduated in 1968, according to her congressional biography.
Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) responded to her comments on Monday afternoon from the house floor.
"Incredibly, the chair of the Subcommittee for Higher Education spoke last week in North Carolina and said, 'I have very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with $200,000 in debt or even $80,000 of debt.' Really?
"It is a sad statement when today's Republican party turns its back on a program that helps millions of Americans fulfill their dreams, and that is named after a Republican Senator, Robert Stafford of Vermont," Courtney said.
Foxx’s spokesperson told The Huffington Post via email, “Congresswoman Foxx is concerned about rising college costs and the burdensome effect a large sum of debt can have on a student's future. She believes the focus should be on making college more affordable and providing students and parents with the information necessary to make informed decisions about college and understand the cost and the implications of those personal decisions. . .”

. . In President Obama's first speech to a joint session of Congress,
he said "education in no longer a pathway to opportunity, it is a
prerequisite." It's no wonder - conventional wisdom says that those
with college degrees earn roughly a million more dollars over their
lives than those without them. And there is a vast apparatus of lending
institutions and Federal guarantees set up to help put people into
college. They do this not by keeping tuition free or low, as we did as a
country after World War II, but by helping people get access to student
loans.
This is the essence of what I've been calling
The Very Bad Deal, where costs are deferred while benefits accrue
upfront. If you get a student loan, you get to attend college, and
college is apparently the key to earning more over your lifetime, to
"opportunity". But student debt has some very nasty tricks and traps
that most 18 year olds aren't aware of when they sign on the dotted
line, and college may not be the opportunity gateway we've been assured
it is.
The scale of the deal is vast and getting bigger
- two thirds of those who attend college do so with borrowed money. In
August of 2010, the Wall Street reported that student loan debt
surpassed credit card debt for the first time in history. This amount
is now sitting at roughly a trillion dollars. Higher education
inflation is the higher than health care inflation, and two and a half
times the rate of normal inflation. Are students really learning two
and a half times as much?
Of course not. What is
happening is that universities have pricing power, and the Greedy
Bastard behavior encourages them to compete on facilities and brand-name
faculties rather than price and quality. The Chronicle of Higher
Education has described "an arms race of expenditures triggered by the
pursuit of prestige." Student debt also distorts pricing. If students
had to pay the full freight in college, they might be more
price-sensitive consumers. But since the costs of the education they
are receiving are hidden, they don't pressure universities to reign in
costs. Lavish living environments, pointlessly luxurious sports
facilities, and high salaries for administrators are just symptoms of a
system where costs have become irrelevant. . ."

Jeb Bush has repeatedly — and falsely — claimed that the United States spends “more per student than any country in the world.” Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland all spend more than the U.S. on elementary and secondary education.
The former Florida governor most recently made this claim at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority Conference, held on June 14 in Washington, D.C. At the conference, Bush spoke about the need to create sustainable economic growth and cited education (at the 15:23 mark) as the “greatest challenge our country faces.”
Bush, June 14: To me the greatest challenge our country faces is that 40 percent of our kids — truly, truly, honestly — 40 percent of our kids are college or career ready. And we spend more per student than any country in the world. That is not acceptable. Too many young people now have shattered dreams because they don’t have the skills to be successful.
Bush made a similar claim in an earlier interview with Newsmax TV (about 19 minutes into the video):
Bush, March 31: We have a third of our kids that don’t make it through the system, even though we spend more per student than any country in the world. And a lot of students could be doing college-level work by the time they’ve graduated from high school but in effect they’re held back because we have this adult-centered homogenized learning model.
We asked Bush spokeswoman Jaryn Emhof for information that would support the governor’s claim that the U.S. has the highest per-student expenditure rate. But the information she provided contradicted his claim.
