If Only . . .

. . .  this technology could be employed to eliminate racist, misogynistic, xenophobic and homophobic behavior . . .

(from https://www.npr.org/2019/07/16/717487081/video-move-objects-with-your-mind-were-getting-there-with-the-help-of-an-armband)
". . . an armband that reads neuron activity to let you move objects in digital space. Then it goes further, giving you mental control of physical robots too. Think "the Force" from Star Wars. . . Could this fundamentally change the way we interact with our devices? The scientists and engineers behind it say that if this kind of intention-powered technology takes off, clunky keyboards and tiny smartphone screen buttons will be a thing of the past. Instead of controlling our tech with voice or touch, we'd control it with our thoughts. . ."

Someone . . .

. . . was sensitive about Spike Lee's comments ". . . Be nice if Spike Lee could read his notes, or better yet not have to use notes at all, when doing his racist hit . . . "(Donald J. Trump @realdonaldtrump)

". . . He (Spike Lee, in his Oscar acceptance speech last night)added that the 2020 presidential election was just "around the corner." . . . "Let’s all mobilize," he continued. "Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing! . . . "

P.S. Racist???!!!

In Short . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/trump-s-first-state-union-was-classic-reality-tv-who-ncna843351)
". . . business career was . . . a long list of bankruptcies, defaults and alleged dalliances with organized crime . . . rebranded as a towering tycoon through his reality TV show . . . could be the person he had always pretended to be: a Manhattan behemoth whose decisions were obeyed and feared without question. . . What was the worst that could happen?. . . went on to parlay his newfound celebrity into becoming America’s most unpopular first-year president ever. . . first State of the Union address. . . bore little resemblance to the reality America has endured over the past year. . . spoke of unity, (yet) there was no mention of last August’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville . . . later stated that some white supremacists in attendance were “very fine people.” . . . claim(ed) that he was not interested in using nuclear weapons despite threatening North Korea for a year with talk of pre-emptive strikes and “fire and fury”. . . while remaining unaccountable to the American public about his own myriad scandals involving everything from his finances to allegations of sexual misconduct. . . despite steady public condemnation of . . . racism, cruelty and incompetence, conservative politicians and some pundits will likely spend the next few days once again proclaiming that the president has miraculously “pivoted” to become “presidential.” (If and when this temporary delusion occurs, ignore it.). . .Indeed, Republicans have already begun to praise him like apparatchiks of an autocrat. This is not helped by select journalists who have helped perpetuate an echo chamber of his own narcissism. . ."

Dear . . .

. . . Donald . . .
As much as I hate to admit it, you and I are not that much different.  No, I don't mean I am a racist, misogynist or pathological liar with an ego as big as all outdoors.  What I mean is that I, too, crave attention.  I would absolutely love to have millions of people loving my music, purchasing all my releases and hiring me to play all my very own original music for them, day and night. all the time. So when it comes to craving attention, Don, I truly 'get it.' The real difference between you and me is that, I DON'T PRETEND TO BE QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT.

Inadequate. . .

. . . education . . .

(from http://www.concordmonitor.com/Azzi-Trump-media-coverage-U-S-politics-1979775.aspx)
". . .‘It’s a universal law – intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education,” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote. “An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”. . . a sad reflection of the state of politics and education in America. Such is the result, too, of a media more obsessed with celebrity and acceptance than with representing the interests of civil society. . . Of a media more engaged with style than substance, profits than policy, access than accuracy. At a time where the political barbarism of Donald Trump – the original “Birther” who fed the anti-Obama movement from the beginning – has given license to his followers to engage in delusionary, racist rhetoric against women and whole communities of minority Americans, the press chose to treat Trump-ism as a soap-opera phenomena rather than as a challenge to American values. That there are Americans who are today celebrating the anointment of a charismatic professional bully, serial liar, misogynist, xenophobic demagogue who divides through hatred in order to conquer is not only the result of eight years of a nativist, racist revival movement but proof that a nation created on the promise of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness still has a long way to go to fulfill its promise to all its citizens. . . The very media that failed us after 9/11, that failed us during Afghanistan and Iraq and the so-called “War on Terror,” and later failed to directly confront institutional corruption, corporate oligarchs and ruling elites. Now, they have failed to directly confront the rise of nativism, white nationalism, bigotry and racism that followed President Obama’s election. . ."

Miles . . .

. . . ahead of most of us . . .

I've read 'Miles: The Autobiography by Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe' and came to the conclusion that Miles was a tremendous talent, a hot-tempered, impatient man, something of a racist in word, not so much a racist in deed, a decent, caring person and, most importantly and not surprisingly, a human being.

And this, which I just found on FaceBook, reaffirms the conclusion I reached. . . and I think is, quite frankly . . . inspirational.

Paraphrasing . . .

. . . 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone'. . .
Haven't we ALL done something in the past which we now thoroughly regret? . . .

(from http://www.businessinsider.com/before-dr-seuss-was-famous-he-drew-these-sad-racist-ads-2012-3)
". . .In his political cartoons (from the collection of the Springfield Library and Museums Association), (Dr.)Seuss inveighed against the Japanese during World War II; he drew them buck-toothed and squint-eyed. The images are depressing because they reveal that one of America's most original artist-authors had the same tired views of non-whites that his contemporaries did. . . He also expressed regret for his anti-Japanese views, according to filmmaker Ron Lamothe, who made The Political Dr. Seuss: "The only evidence I have comes from his biographers, who told me that years later—although still recognizing its necessity due to the war—he was regretful about some of his cartoons for PM and some of the propaganda work he did for the Army Signal Corps. I do think the fact he dedicated Horton Hears a Who—a parable about the American postwar occupation of Japan—to “My Great Friend, Mitsugi Nakamura of Kyoto, Japan,” says something of his changing attitudes toward the Japanese (this following a trip he made there in 1953). Though, as Richard Minear has pointed out, Horton Hears a Who still smacks of American chauvinism, and it makes no reference to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. . ."

(from Dr. Seuss created several offensive cartoons early in his career but began to atone for his previous views, producing several anti-racism illustrations and cartoons, notes the news site.)
". . . In a 1929 illustration for Judge magazine, he (Dr. Seuss) depicted black people for sale with a racist sign in the image's background  .  . According to BET, the illustration went to auction with a minimum bid of $20,000 in California . . . By the end, there hadn't been any bids, but it could receive a post-auction bid, according to Laura Yntema, the auction manager, according to the site. The drawing is one part of the four-part panel drawing Cross-Section of the World's Most Prosperous Department Store, the report notes. . ."

Caught Short . . .

. . . for words. . .

A friend recently commented to me that he wished the President had not made those recent comments about race relations to which I, naturally, responded, "Why?"  He said that among all of the problems we as a people, society and world currently face, the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman situation should not be monopolizing our attention. In short, like a popular song on a top 40 radio station, he was just sick and tired of hearing about it.

Like many other conversations with many people, I was quickly distracted from this one and on to other things.  But later that day, after contemplating our short interchange further, I realized what I could have, should have, and hope to tell my friend upon our next encounter.  And, in brief, that is:  the President's remarks were spot-on.  They were NOT political, they were not platitudinous or pompous blather, trite heard-it-alreadies or scolding.  They were simply a from-the-heart reflection and plea for US to reflect on how we treat each other.  Reflect- probably something very few of us do during our busy, self-absorbed days.  He also described how it feels (and felt to him) being a young black man and some of the racist behaviors with which young black men must cope everyday.  He mentioned the history of mistreatment to which black people have been subjected and alluded to the anger that results.  So many things which white people know, but have somehow tucked away and choose not to think about too much. . . BUT SHOULD!

These are things that middle-aged white men such as my friend and myself do not now, nor have in the past, encountered.  If we have a country, and a world, where people must live together, we must, at the very least, be empathetic to these things.  This is every bit as important as the economy, the environment, budgets and spending, foreign policy, drones and (do-nothing)politicos.  This is our world.  It's the only one we've got. We can, and should, certainly make time to help resolve such such relevant and important issues as THE WAY WE GET ALONG!
