Extremes . . .

Just look at the morning paper

And tell me what you see.

Is something very wrong

Or maybe my eyes deceive me?

Somewhere in the local section;

A buried paragraph;

Someone who had the time to care

And the character to act.

The higher the highs,

The lower the lows,

The older I get

That's the way that it goes.

The more that I think that I want

The less that I need,

Because I realize how precious

And how short

This time with you may be. 

When you're young and your biggest worry's

What game you want to play.

Such innocence is just surpassed

By the naivete.

Take good with the worst

And better.

You know they're not the same.

Youth somehow brings them all together.

Different they are

But subtle the shades.

Youth really is only wasted,

If never you've tasted

All the bitter, as well as sweet.

I hope you don't misunderstand me

Or what I want to say.

It's nothing revolutionary.

Ignorance won't make this go away.

Nobody likes a busybody.

Nobody knows it all.

There's one thing I can tell you certain,

Take none for granted

Short or the tall.

". . . Some of my readers may have an interest in being informed whether or no any portions of the Marshalseal Prison are yet standing. I did not know, myself, until the sixth of this present month, when I went to look. I found the outer front courtyard, often mentioned here, metamorphosed into a butter shop; and I then almost gave up every brick of the jail for lost. Wandering, however, down a certain adjacent 'Angel Court, leading to Bermondsey', I came to 'Marshalsea Place:' the houses in which I reognised, not only as the great block of the former prison, but as preserving the rooms that arose in my mind's-eye when I became little Dorrit's biographer. The smallest boy I ever conversed with, carrying the largest baby I ever saw, offered a supernaturally intelligent explanation of the licality in its old uses, and was very nearly correct. How this young Newton (for such I judge him to be) came by his information, I don't know; he was a quarter of a century too young to know anything about it of himself. I pointed to the window of the room there Little Dorrit was born, and where her father lived so long, and asked him what was the name of the lodger who tenanted that apartment at present? He said, 'Tom Pythick.' I asked him who was Tom Pythick? and he said, 'Joe Pythick's uncle.'

My wife's niece is to be married in the near future, an event that had to be postponed due to the development of a pandemic. The ceremony was to take place in Florida, a substantial distance for most of her family, but still a potential adventure for us. Fast-forward to the present. Jenny and her fiancé have relocated to the 'great state of' (as they say) Texas. Suddenly the adventure aspect has been slightly reduced, while the distance and the complexity involved in our attendance have increased. The mere mention of Texas brings to mind my father's sister, who with her husband, a native of that state, lives there. The thought of my long, unseen aunt prompts additional ones of long unseen relatives from my side of, what my wife humorously yet sympathetically calls- my ''close-knit" family. I believe we were a relatively normal extended family in my younger years, but due to time, age, illness or death, the members simply 'drifted apart.'

Compounded . . .

In a daring display of true bravado;
Surprising when it happened.
He had since become incommunicado.

It took so long to find him
In that god-forsaken wilderness.
The mountains reaching upward to the sky
And friends who claimed they'd help us
Only stumbling on their own duplicity.

He had us scared and running
For so many awful years;
His ruthlessness legend every place he'd been.
Nobody knew quite how to do that
Which all knew had to be done immediately.
