Porches and Things . . .

The stars lay in a blanket above.
A gentle breeze blowing in from the sea.
The last light flickers from one lonely candle.
Never before was a night half as perfect
For you and me.

But there was a party last night.
Yes there was a party nextdoor,
‘Cause there’s a boy sleeping on the back porch.

You would have noticed a pin drop that evening.
The peace and calm when romance fills the air.
Ambience oozing from Coltrane and Hartman.
And barely twenty feet away, we’d no clue
What was happening there.

No blaring rock and roll.
No bottles on the walk.
No screaming, shouting and no fight.
Nobody called the law.
No sirens in the night.
Just one young man, stretched out on a chaise,
Sleeping it off.

Occasions such as this should be savored.
The combination of circumstance rare.
You may just be the true love that I’ve searched for.
I think though, that the folks in the house that’s next door
Just don’t care.

Think . . .

For some reason, I periodically write a lyric that is intentionally trite. It's fun. It's paying respectful homage to the simple, tin-pan alley-type of swooning love songs from the past. McCartney surrendered to the feeling in lots of his songs. I think that many of the biggest pop music hits involve the topic of 'love' (romantic love) and incorporate some 'hokey' language because when you're dumbstruck by love, you feel and can many times act hokey, trite and even silly. It's all part of life and just another of those crazy things
that make us human. (Starting to sound like another song.)

Note: This song, entitled 'Thinking,' is the reason you see an image of 'The Thinker' attached to the post.

Reveal . . .

The story of Albert revealed itself during a mid-day stroll around Baltimore's inner harbor on a summer day. My full-time, non-musical employment kept me in the downtown Baltimore area for most of my working years. Whenever I could, I would spend my lunch hour either walking or otherwise occupying that time with other diversions within the inner harbor. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, downtown Baltimore was a lively, vital place with shops, restaurants, a science center, museums etc. One day while sitting and primarily people-watching, just to the right of the boat slips in this photo, an announcement blared over the PA system of the marina, apparently directed at one of the employees. Back then, the slips were configured differently with definite 'T'-shapes and running directly from the water's edge outward in smaller piers. The announcement was, "half of the T-head on E, Albert." I hadn't received a more obvious song title since "Art Edsel Diamond Beach Grand Pool Bar", but that's another story.

Origins . . .

. . . of ideas are inexplicably wonderful

I don’t ask much,
Living my life the way that I want.
I stay in touch with what goes on there.
I’ve seen trouble. I’ve seen heartache.
But my time here
Has been long enough to
Instill certain qualities.
Seems the more that I witness,
All the more that I wish
I could hear what you’re saying.
We’re all better than this.
Let’s identify exactly what we miss.

Beyond perilous moors
The brave sea glitters.
Better lies ahead.da

Whether or not
We realize the years flow upstream.
Things that we’ve got aren’t always what they seem.
Your and my faiths are so different.
Each is placed in
Antipodal reference
So painful to reconcile.
If we stop trying,
What can we do?
What’s in the future
For me and you?
There’s both right and wrong but only reality prevails.

Boss . . .

This boss's diatribe strikes a very familiar note with me as I'm sure with many present and ex-office workers. How these people reach their position god only knows. . . But that's ANOTHER song.

Moment . . .

Frequently, the natural optimist in me surfaces when writing. Similarly to The Hours, Moment, posted here, is a treatise on living everyday like (yes, it can sound morbid) it's your last. Consequently, when opportunity arises, we must first, recognize it, and then take advantage of it.
