Optimism . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, by Jon Meacham)
". . . Jefferson hoped that subjecting religious sensibilities to free inquiry would transform faith from a source of contention into a force for good, for he knew that religion in one form or another was a perpetual factor in the world. The wisest course, then, was not to rail against it but to encourage the application of reason to questions of faith. The more rational that men became about religion, Jefferson believed, the better lives they would lead; in turn the life of the nation would become more stable and virtuous. . ."

The Meaning . . .

. . . of life??

Eat that pork.
Eat that ham.
Laugh til you choke on Billy Graham.
Moses, Aaron and Abraham,
They're all a waste of time.
It's your ass that's on the line.
Do what you want to.
Do what you will.
Just don't mess up your neighbor's thrill.
And when you pay the bill
Kindly leave a little tip,
And help the next poor sucker
On his one-way trip.

Big . . .

. . . shot

Everybody thinks he's a big, big shot
In the world of the buy and the sell.
Respect of the human is one thing,
But for lack of respect, you'll pay hell.

It's not unlike Hollywood
Where they're all very pretty
Dressed oh, so stylishly
Treating all others shitty,
While raking in millions
For pretending to be
Other people on screen
For the public to see.

For the former, it seems, adulation is there.
Although not on a scale with the latter.
The importance is inflated;
The esteem is immense,
Deep inside his own head, is the matter.

Take This Moment . . .

Hey you down there on the ground,
Don’t you think that it’s time
You should fly?
And do you consider the cost
Of the pride that you wear
Like a smile?

Take this moment
You’ve got here.
You may not
Get another try.
Sometimes only
One chance comes around
At a time.

It’s two. That’s the number required
For the dance that we do
To get by.
A few drag you into the mire,
But they’re strong
Many wiles they devise.

Doomed if you don’t learn.
Farce is what you earn from the tragedy.
What have we to gain
By being stubborn?

You’re blue and you don’t know why.
Pieces of you are lost in each fight.

Facing . . .

. . . the proverbial music

I've been told every dog gets his day.
I've seen it happen in some way.
It was, in all truth, gratifying.
But not revenge or sour grapes.

It was only certain, righteous justice;
Reaping just what they had sown.
Unaccountable for so long,
Now they find there's no escape.

Persistence . . .

Run, run, run for your life.
Run like you've never
From injustice and strife.

But before you go,
Take one moment please
To explain how it goes
That through each, our own journey,
We surmount many hurdles,
As if actual participants
In a real tourney?

Coming Soon . . .

After regrouping, wood-shedding and playing lots of music with OHO [another Baltimore staple], a new (and very different) Ray Jozwiak - Gonzo Piano album 'Grains' is scheduled for release in June 2022. 'Grains' is an amalgamation of jazz influences and chops, Brill Building writing, lyrics (diametrically opposed to 'Frills') and colors from a life well-lived and loved. On the album you'll find 'Broken', a former tyrant expressing his regrets, 'Thinking', a pure love-song, reflections on recent events 'Otherwise' and 'Elephants' and the frustration with the everyday grind is expressed in 'Baggage'. . . 'Grains' (as in 'like sands through the hourglass' ) will be available from most online music retailers, including music.apple.com and amazon.com, June 7, 2022.
