You were always a crackshot. You were always the ace.
Someone called you a crackpot. Said it right to your face.
It was not the effrontery that made you react;
The assault and the violation of rights.

In this wonderful country you and I live today.
Where we value the freedom which allows us to say,
Though the founders had principles, this can’t be denied.
Nothing’s frozen in time but history.
Who can really see that which the future brings?
Take that next shuttle. Go off to your condo on Mars.

Don’t take your guns to space.
They’ve done sufficient damage to this place.
Don’t take your guns to space.

It’s a volatile topic I’m addressing today. 
But I fear to ignore it leaves for us hell to pay.
All the hunters and gatherers kick up such a stink.
Where this path’s gonna lead they dare not think.

We continue to venture into places unknown.
All this knowledge and progress takes us so far from home.
Many say that you must accept the good with the bad.
Seems to me that experience would show
Some things from the past don’t deserve to last.
Take that next step and leave all useless baggage behind.

Our sophistication in the arts and  the sciences can’t be denied.
Still we choose our tribal ways when there’s fear and uncertainty
That we must face. They’re true and tried.

But you still fail to grasp it like some new cosmic star.
Using force  laced with habit, you’re resisting so hard.
You say you got the word from some king high on a throne. 
But mysteriously each word he speaks in that kingly tone, 
Mighty but all alone, uncannily somehow sounds just like all of your  own.

Words . . .

 
Words are all that I have to express 
All the things I would like to be able to tell you 
But don't quite know how.
Couldn't before and still can't do it now.
During all of this time that's transpired 
Little's changed but a lot has occurred in my thoughts 
And my feelings for you.
Countless superior intellects have searched for answers.
I never gave it a whole lot of thought.


Until I tried 
To let you know how much I feel inside
For you.


I have always believed that it's true .
Very few things I'll ever encounter will be quite 
s precious as you.
The magic between us so rare and so new.
Though I'm not one of those that you find 
Who has always the need to express to so many 
Exactly what he has in mind.
I find I have this burning that's deep down inside me
For words I never needed before.


I can't imagine ever having my life depend upon eloquence
And maybe it doesn't.
But after all this time together it seems long overdue.
And in the end it probably doesn't make a difference in how you feel
If I never say it.


Now I'm daily rehearsing the way 
To articulate every syllable nuance 
And stress when I say
How much I need to have you here today.
And I won't give it up easily 
I suspect that it's just as important to you 
As it is now to me.
The words we use themselves have no meaning.
So all the more must I make it right.


Now that I try 
To let you know how much I feel  inside.
Until I tried 
To let you know how much I feel inside
for you.

“It’s hard to imagine that in 200 years or more — when historians dig into the culture of the late 20th century — anyone but the Beatles and Bob Dylan will be worth more than a passing mention,” (Writer Jeff) Slate wrote. “That means Young and Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen and, of course, Paul Simon — all giants in their day — will be no more than footnotes, at best, to Dylan and the Beatles, if only because history is a blunt instrument and doesn’t have room (at least not in the broadest sense) for subtlety.” 


Newsflash for Jeff Slate! If neither Dylan nor the Beatles ever existed, there would still be a wealth of interesting, innovative, influential and entertaining late 20th century music (and culture) with substantial longevity. Sadly, but truthfully, the work of Jeff Slate would (and will) not be included in that vast body.
