What If . . .

(from http://www.partnershipway.org/learn-more/articles-by-riane-eisler/spirituality-sexuality/making-sex-a-sacred-pleasure by Jyotsna Sreenivasan)
". . . sexuality were a sacred, celebrated part of our religion and culture? What if sexual love, nurturing, and women's life-giving powers were seen as the most important subjects of art and literature? What if children were taught these values along with their ABCs? That's the vision of Riane Eisler, author of the influential best-seller The Chalice and The Blade.

In her new book, Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the Body (Harper and Row, 1995), Eisler argues that a world in which sexual love is sacred is also a world of peace, caring, and respect for others. Eisler challenges current Western notions of sexuality by revealing that prehistoric European egalitarian cultures actually revered sexuality and bodily pleasure as part of their religion. She contrasts this with many modern religious traditions, which revere war, martyrdom, and asceticism while denigrating sexuality and pleasure. . ."

Unequal . . .

(from http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2014/09/republicans-dismiss-equal-pay-and-abortions-for-rape-as-minor-issues-dems-pounce.html/) [GOP lieutenant governor candidate Dan] Patrick was asked about the problem of unequal pay for women at a public forum and responded, “I don’t think it is a problem.”

“I don’t think government should tell businesses how to pay their staff,” he said.

On the equal pay issue, Texas Democratic Party spokeswoman Lisa Paul said Patrick’s dismissal shows that he is out-of-touch with the realities that women face in the workplace.

“Despite Dan Patrick’s nonchalance and insensitivity, Texas women know they deserve equal pay for equal work,” she said, citing statistics that show that Texas women make 79 cents on the dollar for the same work as men.

“If Dan Patrick wants to lead Texas he should be ready to tell our young women that if they work hard, they can expect a fair paycheck and equality in the workplace. Instead he plans to sit by and pretend this is not an issue that affects every family in Texas,” Paul said.

Stranger Than . . .

. . . fiction . . .

 (from http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/italys-singing-nun-cristina-scuccia-covers-madonnas-virgin-n230346)
Reviving Madonna’s blockbuster “Like a Virgin” may not seem an obvious pick for Italy’s singing nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia. After all, it's not entirely clear if Madonna was fully referring to the Holy Spirit when she belted out the words “touched for the very first time.” But Scuccia, who is set to release her debut album on Nov. 11 after winning Italy’s “The Voice” singing competition earlier this year, claims she only had the purest of intentions when she chose the track. “Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people [and] rescue them from their past,” the nun told Italian newspaper Avvenire.

“We have transformed this song from the pop-dance piece, which it was, into a romantic ballad ... something more similar to a lay prayer than to a pop piece,” she added. Both videos are set in Venice, but while the American singer rolled around sensually in a gondola, the nun sings in various landmarks wearing a habit. Scuccia said she did not think Madonna had heard her rendition, adding: “I’d like to see her face when they tell her it’s a nun singing.”

Trombone. . .

. . . shorty. . .
(apologies to Mr. DeVito) It WAS in a movie title. . .

Six degrees (and then some) of separation. . . a friend has a son whose best man at his wedding was . . . Trombone Shorty . . . and I don't know him, but I love his music. . . and everyone else at the table never heard of him . . .

(Troy) Andrews was born in New Orleans. He grew up in its Tremé neighborhood, and participated in brass band parades as a child, becoming a bandleader by the age of six.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, 1991: "Carlsberg Brass Band" from Denmark with young "Trombone Shorty" Troy Andrews on trombone.

In his teens, Andrews was a member of the Stooges Brass Band, recording and playing with the band.[2] He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).

In 2005, Andrews was a featured member of Lenny Kravitz's horn section in a world tour that shared billing with acts including Aerosmith.

Six weeks after the levees failed in New Orleans on August 29, 2005, some of the city's greatest musicians went to Austin, Texas, to record a benefit CD called Sing Me Back Home at Wire Studios with producers Leo Sacks and Ray Bardani. With their lives in transition, the collective became known as The New Orleans Social Club. Andrews was the featured guest on "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You," a tribute to "Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Calling You" which was a Latin-jazz-soul hit for the Jimmy Castor Bunch on Smash Records in 1966. Andrews also performed on "Where Y'At" as part of The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue featuring Charles Neville of The Neville Brothers.

Shouts . . .

. . . in the street
I hear them as I'm walking home
Shoes on my feet
Touch down and take off as I roam
Dreams lifted up
So many pies in the sky
U-flying-o's
I duck them as they fly on by

Tomorrow takes care of itself
Today has its trial and its call
Janus he waits at your door
Rising or breaking his fall
You've got your "Time"
And secrets that love has betrayed
The long yellow line down your spine
That your feeling has frayed

Take my hand we may see
Everything we mean to be

When we meet again
Should it be under blanket of night?
All that remains
Is the matter of choice in disguise
Deep in the heart
Where paradox finds its resolve
Long bodies live
They've learned how to bend to absolve

Take my hand we may see
Everything we mean to be
Am I with you or you with me?
We have our time then take our leave

Now desire is the tie
That holds us fast to life
For the sweetness of the honey
Risk the peril of the hive
Now I'm running through your veins
In exchange I know your pain
All the lies have run aground
And to this earth I'm bound

Shouts in the street
I hear them as I'm walking home
Shoes on my feet
Touch down and take off as I roam

Take my hand we may see
Everything we mean to be
Am I with you or you with me?
We have our time then take our leave
