Off the Cuff . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improvisation)
". . . Improvisation can be thought of as an "on the spot" or "off the cuff" spontaneous moment of sudden inventiveness that can just come to mind, body and spirit as an inspiration. No preparation or training is needed. However, improvisation in any life or art form, can occur more often if it is practiced as a way of encouraging creative behavior. That practice includes learning to use one's intuition, as well as learning a technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within the domain in which one is improvising. . . in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment and inner feelings. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. . .Techniques of improvisation are widely used in training for performing arts or entertainment; for example, music, theatre and dance. . . The simple act of speaking requires a good deal of improvisation because the mind is addressing its own thought and creating its unrehearsed delivery in words, sounds and gestures, forming unpredictable statements that feed back into the thought process (the performer as listener), creating an enriched process that is not unlike instantaneous composition . . ."

ahh. . .

. . . those were the days. . .
". . . My Farfisa Fast Four and Leslie 145 were setup in a prominent location in the den of our apartment for quick and easy access.  Truth is, I'm not sure if I even played once a week at that time. But I was building my vinyl record album collection of my favorite jazz cats during the period and joyfully and effortlessly soaking in their music as often as I could.  My Coltrane, Dolphy, Adderley and McLean collections grew with much less reliance on the old Tull, Gentle Giant and Yes for musical satisfaction.  This too combined with sounds exemplifying the musical tastes of my significant other, sometimes not so willingly or graciously.

My technique and creativity suffered during this period.  Whenever I played, generally on Sunday afternoons, I ran through the same several bebop arrangements of standards that I had learned from or through my elementary-school friend Bob. I was grateful for Bob's influence which led me into the direction of jazz, that combined with my exposure to a superb collection of jazz, vinyl LPs at the college radio station where I worked during my undergraduate years.

It wasn't until our eldest son, Spencer, was born that I began to crave more music-related activity. . ."

Bowled over . . .

. . . Dude

". . . I didn't evaluate music or entertainment for its sophistication, its level of technique or virtuosity or any of that stuff;  and still don't, for the most part.  My preferred entertainments are ones that quite simply MOVE me.  I can't always explain why, nor should I have to, but if I am moved in some small form or fashion, I deem it desirable.  And it doesn't have to move me the first time I hear it like 'love at first sight';  only in this case, at first 'listen'. In fact, some of the most rewarding (or MOVING) music that I now appreciate most did not bowl me over the first time I heard it. . . "
