Analyze . . .

. . . schmanalyze!

My advice (as if you asked and as if you would really want it) regarding our "newspeople's" analyses of presidential candidate debates is, quite simply, ignore it.  Television debates are not about issues, they're about personalities; personalities of both the candidates and the 'broadcasters'. They are choreographed spectacles.

In choosing your candidate for president, think about how you want to be treated. Think about how you think we should treat our fellow earthlings. Then think about how you believe your candidate views both of those prospects. Then, read the fact check websites and read the writings of the candidates themselves. (The one possible exception to this rule is Donald Trump, as I'm not really sure he can write.)

Crackpots . . .

. . . abound . . .
Advice for Ben Carson. . .
1.  Cancel your presidential campaign
2.  Research Islam
3.  Research the Constitution
4.  Never run for president again

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/spokesman-ben-carson-thinks-people-would-decide-muslim-president-n430656)
". . . Carson campaign spokesman Doug Watts said Carson will likely reach out to members of the Muslim community in wake of the comments but said the interview should be "watched or read carefully." "He did not say that a Muslim should be prevented from running, or barred from running in any way," Watts said. "He [Carson] just doesn't believe the American people are ready for that." Carson said Sunday in response to an interview question that "I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that." When asked if a candidate's faith should matter to voters, Carson said, "I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it's inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter." When asked if he thought Islam is consistent with the Constitution, Carson said, "No, I don't, I do not." . . . "

"More than 90,000 people have signed our petition asking the Democratic Party to host more presidential debates starting this summer. Voters shouldn't wait to hear candidates debate the very serious issues facing our country.

Now that. . .

. . . the election is finally over.  One estimate said the presidential campaigns costs a combined total of $2.5 billion.  I don't know why people brush off billions whenever I ask about saving such sums as the campaign expense.  I know the national deficit is in trillions but, as Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen said, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money."  The campaign expenses are particularly irksome to me because they are purely showbiz.  Dispensing facts to the general public in print or online, for example, would be infinitely less expensive than the hateful and reality-challenged television ads the two major candidates ran.

And though we are left with a president who exhibits some leaning toward integrity, albeit not fully realized when applicable to the U.S. (and world also, for that matter) citizenry, and not with one who not only ignores the needs of the preponderance of the planet's population but also lives in a fantasy, pre-scientific world landscaped with hundred-dollar bills (or are they thousands?) - I don't really think all our problems are solved.

Which leads me back to Rocky (Anderson, that is):  ". . . The government is shafting the people of this country. It doesn’t matter which party is the majority, they’re all feeding at the same trough of special interest money and we, the American people, are suffering from it. We’re in the midst of a new Gilded Age, with a greater disparity between income and wealth since the 1920s and the highest poverty rates since 1965. It’s as if all the gains of the war on poverty have disappeared. That along with our outrageous healthcare system, including Obamacare, results in incredible suffering, including the loss of tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives every year. . ."

So even though the election is over, there is still much work to be done.

Two. . .

 . . . for tea. . .
Not for our choices of presidential candidates.

Once again, our wonderful media and even more wonderful electoral system have, in combination failed us tremendously.  There are actually, contrary to popular perception, OTHER options for president of the United States.

Not everything needs to exist in only in pairs like:
    pants/trousers
    underwear
    swimming trunks
    shorts
    jeans
    glasses
    sunglasses
    binoculars
    goggles
    scissors
    pliers
    clippers
    tweezers
    tongs
    headphones
    handcuffs
    shoes
    socks
    slippers
    boots
    shoe laces
    gloves
    cuff links
    earrings
    pair of contacts
    pair of eyes
    pair of lungs
    kidneys
    wings
    dice
    skis
    skates
    crutches
    chopsticks
    speakers
    headlights
    windshield wipers
    knitting needles

Depending upon your particular state, (and don't forget write-in possibility) there are other choices:

Libertarian Party
Gary Johnson - official nominee. Former Republican governor of New Mexico

Green Party
Jill Stein - official nominee. Physician

Constitution Party
Virgil Goode - official nominee. Former U.S. Congressman from Virginia, who was in Congress as a Democrat, an independent, and lastly a Republican

Prohibition Party
    Jack Fellure - official nominee

Justice Party
Rocky Anderson, former mayor of Salt Lake City

Peace and Freedom Party
Roseanne Barr, entertainer, is the nominee of the California-based  with activist Cindy Sheehan as her running mate

The Reform Party
    Andre Barnett

Socialist Party
    Stewart Alexander

Party for Socialism and Liberation
    Peta Lindsay

Socialist Workers Party
    James Harris

Socialist Equality Party
    Jerry White

Freedom Socialist Party
    Stephen Durham

Why? . . .

. . .
Albert Einstein Quote-

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

(from http://www.debates.org/index.php?page=about-cpd)
". . . The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) was established in 1987 to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. Its primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates. The organization, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) corporation, sponsored all the presidential debates in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. . . "

(from ABC News)
". . . Green Party candidate Jill Stein and her vice presidential running mate Cheri Honkala were arrested at the Hofstra University debate site today as they protested their exclusion from the second presidential debate.

Stein and Honkala were jailed for disorderly conduct around 3 p.m.  when they were blocked by police officers as they attempted to enter the debate hall, according to Stein’s campaign manager Ben Manski.

Manski said that it was unclear when they would be released, but they could remain jailed until midnight. The Nassau County Police Department said that it was unclear when Stein and Honkala might be released.

“The arrest was outrageous and shouldn’t be tolerated in a country that is a leading proponent of democracy,” Manski told ABC News. “They knew that there was the possibility that they would be arrested. Their intention was to enter the premises and bear witness to the mockery of democracy that is tonight’s debate,” he said.

The Green Party has long complained that the Commission on Presidential Debates attempts to “rig elections” in favor of the two major political parties by excluding third party candidates from debates. Stein and Honkala also planned protests at the first presidential debate in Denver.

Stein, a licensed physician, is on the presidential ballot in 38 states or 85 percent of the ballots, her campaign says.

The Commission on Presidential Debates was formed in 1987 to administer general election debates.

In addition to the constitutional criteria to be eligible for the presidency, the Presidential Debate Commission requires that candidates have a mathematical possibility of achieving the 270 electoral college votes necessary to be elected, and the candidates must have at least 15 percent support in public opinion based on the average of five national polls in order to participate. . . Is it me? . . .

. . . or was the debate something like this? . . .

 (from http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2012/president/candidates/romney/2012/10/11/fact-check-slips-vice-president-debate/7ZH8sFVuIfG2B7XpZaaozH/story.html)
". . .Vice President Joe Biden has mangled a heaping helping of facts over the years. Despite being newer to presidential-campaign politics, Republican Paul Ryan has already earned something of a reputation Vice President Joe Biden has mangled a heaping helping of facts over the years. Despite being newer to presidential-campaign politics, Republican Paul Ryan has already earned something of a reputation for taking flying leaps past reality.

How'd they do Thursday night?

Here’s a look at some of their claims:

BIDEN, on whether U.S. should have beefed up security at the U.S. Consulate in Libya before the deadly terrorist attack there: ‘‘We weren’t told they wanted more security there.’’

RYAN: ‘‘There were requests for more security.’’

THE FACTS: Ryan is right, judging by testimony from Obama administration officials at a congressional hearing this week.

Charlene R. Lamb, a deputy assistant secretary for diplomatic security, told lawmakers she refused requests for more security in Benghazi, saying the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate. ‘‘Yes, sir, I said personally I would not support it,’’ she said.

Eric Nordstrom, who was the top security official in Libya earlier this year, testified he was criticized for seeking more security. He said conversations he had with people in Washington led him to believe that it was ‘‘abundantly clear we were not going to get resources until the aftermath of an incident. How thin does the ice have to get before someone falls through?’’

___

RYAN: ‘‘We should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting, when the mullahs in Iran were attacking their people. We should not have called Bashar Assad a reformer when he was turning his Russian-provided guns on his own people.

THE FACTS: Neither President Barack Obama nor anyone else in his administration ever considered the Syrian leader a ‘‘reformer.’’ The oft-repeated charge stems from an interview Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave in March 2011 noting that ‘‘many of the members of Congress of both parties who have gone to Syria in recent months have said they believe he’s a reformer.’’ She did not endorse that view. The comment was widely perceived to be a knock at senators such as John Kerry of Massachusetts who maintained cordial relations with Assad in the months leading up to his crackdown on protesters.

___

BIDEN: ‘‘We went out and rescued General Motors.’’

THE FACTS: Actually, the auto bailout of General Motors and Chrysler began under President George W. Bush. The Obama administration continued and expanded it.

___ RYAN: ‘‘And then they put this new Obamacare board in charge of cutting Medicare each and every year in ways that will lead to denied care for current seniors. This board, by the way, it’s 15 people, the president’s supposed to appoint them next year. And not one of them even has to have medical training.’’

THE FACTS: Ryan is referring to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, created under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law. It has the power to force cuts in Medicare payments to service providers if costs rise above certain levels and Congress fails to act. But it doesn’t look like the board will be cutting Medicare ‘‘each and every year,’’ as Ryan asserts. Medicare costs are currently rising modestly and the government’s own experts project the board’s intervention will not be needed until 2018 and 2019 at the earliest — after Obama leaves office if re-elected to a second term.

___

BIDEN, when asked who would pay more taxes in Obama’s second term: ‘‘People making a million dollars or more.’’

THE FACTS: Obama’s proposed tax increase reaches farther down the income ladder than millionaires. He wants to roll back Bush-era tax cuts for individuals making over $200,000 and couples making more than $250,000.

___

RYAN: ‘‘We cannot allow Iran to gain a nuclear weapons capability. Now, let’s take a look at where we've gone — come from. When Barack Obama was elected, they had enough fissile material — nuclear material — to make one bomb. Now they have enough for five. They’re racing toward a nuclear weapon. They’re four years closer toward a nuclear weapons capability.’’

THE FACTS: Ryan’s claim is misleading. Iran isn’t believed to have produced any of the highly enriched uranium needed to produce even one nuclear weapon, let alone five. That point isn’t even disputed by Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implored the world at the United Nations last month to create a ‘‘red line’’ at enrichment above 20 percent. Iran would have to enrich uranium at much higher levels to produce a weapon. There is intelligence suggesting that Iran has worked on weapon designs, but not that it has developed a delivery system for any potential nuclear warhead. . . "

Cheating? . . .

It post-election cheating that causes more problems. . .

(from http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2012/10/05/no-mitt-romney-did-not-bring-cheat-notes-to-the-debate)
". . . The Commission on Presidential Debates, which runs the debate logistics, did not release its contract of rules to the public this year. And it has not responded to request for comment on the 2012 debate rules. But a copy of the 2004 contract of rules reads: "No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by any candidate." The candidate can take notes, but only on a pad provided by commission staff.

As far as the rule on "tangible things," hankies appear to be an exception.

A forensic video analyst, who did not wish to be named because of pending state and federal cases he’s working on, says he also believes the white object was just a handkerchief.

“The size, thickness, and overall dimensionality when he first walks up to the podium is consistent with a handkerchief, and not with a single note card,” he tells Whispers. “The elemental movement and mechanics [later on in the video] also suggest it’s absolutely a handkerchief he picks up around his face.”

A number of commenters (sic) have pointed to a later part in the video, when Romney collects sheets of paper from the podium at the end of the debate instead of leaving them behind. It’s worth noting that candidates do receive paper from the commission to take notes on, so it was likely those papers Romney was collecting. . . "
