Tomorrow. . .

From the pen (or computer) of Mr. Rod Deacey, Frederick area music impresario. . .

". . . Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase on Monday, August 5, features one of our long-time favorites, all the way from Nashville! – DONNA FROST, who visits the DC area every summer and always comes to Frederick to give her powerful pipes a work-out on some of her country-tinged originals, with the occasional Skeeter Davis or Janis Joplin song thrown in for good measure!  This time Donna brings us the added bonus of rockabilly legend BILLY HANCOCK to share the evening and play along; Billy made his name playing bass and singing vocals with the late, great Danny Gatton in Danny and the Fat Boys and is in five Halls of Fame! It’s going to be a don't-miss show!

The piano prelude this week during the Dog Days of summer will be from our favorite seasonal responder – JIMBOW – who will give us some summer music with his usual mix of familiar phrases from other songs embedded in entirely new pieces; just as you are going, “Wasn't that…”, the music has moved on and is somewhere else entirely! Only Jimbow knows where he is going, and even he doesn't know more than a few seconds in advance… But that’s what makes it great entertainment, folks – get your tickets here – but then we don't have tickets, do we?  Come early to get good seats for the evening and to catch the whole prelude! You can come upstairs at 7:15 pm (maybe 5 minutes or so earlier than that if we're ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For cameo appearances this Monday, we are delighted to welcome CRUMPLED HAT (Rick CRUMP and Les HATley, who have been playing together for more than 20 years; not all the time, of course), the fabulous McTELL BROTHERS, who have been wowing us since they were knee-high to a grasshopper (they are larger now, and still scarily talented!), plus JASON SCHAARSCHMIDT, who has a hard name to spell – hope I have it right! We are also looking forward to the return of TOMY WRIGHT! Poet John Holly will read a couple of poems, and also pass the hat for our featured performers. I may squeeze in a poem or two if time permits…

This week, RON GOAD will hopefully be joined by WALT WAGNER with his cajón (not a needlework storage case!) for their weekly meeting of the beats – and maybe we'll see TOMY WRIGHT back behind the djembes and hi-hat – we live in hope! Last week, the rhythm section was completed by the addition of HOWARD RABACH on bass, who even made me sound good, so he passed the audition – you can come back any time, Howard! Songwriters are welcome to call on our mighty rhythmic resources any time to make their songs sound better, but be careful! When you unleash the beast it is sometimes difficult to get it back in the box…

Mister Goad’s horoscope this week says, “You will be a bit distracted in a good way…” Well, Ron is always a bit distracted, mostly in a good way, so that shouldn't even be in the stars… The words of wisdom this week go on to say, “Your high level of interest in a subject fuels productivity.” Maybe we should get Ron to take a high level of interest in Congress, especially since the majority of us have given up; a 10 percent approval rating tells us that…

Marjorie Thompson’s Guitar Class/Workshop was very much appreciated by attendees last Monday; we are working on getting Marjorie back early next year, as she is rethinking her two-year schedule… If you missed her class this time, you may have another opportunity to catch it relatively soon… Watch this space!

Make a trip to Brewer’s Alley this Monday evening to hear DONNA FROST and BILLY HANCOCK, plus our line-up of talented cameo performers!  And remember, songwriters have a limited income, no health insurance and an uncertain future – and by ‘future’ I mean the rest of the week… Please come and watch them and listen to them and sympathize – it’s the only validation they need! Don't get too chummy, though, or they may follow you home, especially if they think you may have food and/or alcoholic beverages, so don't let your guard down for a second… If necessary, you can distract them by buying one of their CDs – they all have them, I'm afraid, often with photos or drawings of trees on them… Nobody knows why; don't bother asking! . . ."

Brewer's. . .

(
(from Rod Deacey, Frederick (MD)-area musician, songwriter, performer, impressario)
". . . At Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase this Monday, Jan 14, we are delighted to welcome back JASON MYLES GOSS, who I first met when he played for me at the late, lamented WestSide café. Since those days, Jason has been busy touring around the U.S. and recording. He moved from Massachusetts to Brooklyn, NY, about six years ago and his latest CD, his fourth, called Radio Dial, has met with critical acclaim across the country…He’s really good – come and check him out!

“This one-man-show reminded everyone packed into the small venue what live acoustic performances are all about and why the up-and-coming deserve to be heard.”
– Dissolver Magazine

We are happy that COLETTE ROHAN has changed her working hours, so she is able to come and play some piano preludes for us this year! She starts this week – come out and hear her play!  As per normal, come early to find good seats for the evening and to catch the entire prelude. You can come upstairs at 7:15 pm (maybe 5 minutes or so earlier than that if we’re ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For three-song cameo performers this Monday, we are happy to see the return of RICARDO – THE DIVINING SAGE, plus BASSWOOD, and advertising his Feb 18 feature spot, BRETT BARRY! Brett is also helping me tweak the sound this week, so if you see him lurking behind the soundboard – that’s why! We will be also hearing from the regular crew; poet JOHN HOLLY, reciting his poems between other performers, and TODD C. WALKER, who also takes photos, helps emcee and helps run sound. TOMY WRIGHT is with us for the first time this new season, and will play some guitar and sing after the feature. . . "

Friends in Frederick. . .

. . . this Monday night. . .

(from Rod Deacey)
"At Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase this Monday, August 13, we are delighted to welcome back, all the way from Atlanta GA, international touring singer-songwriter JEFF TALMADGE! Jeff has been playing at my shows in Frederick since WestSide café days, and never ceases to amaze me with new songs that sound as if they have been around forever, as comfortable as an old shirt, and filled with experience, revelations, joy and sorrow… His voice is warm and friendly, like sitting around a woodstove on a winter’s night, and his guitar-playing is impeccable  -- Blissville! As an extra treat, T.Edwin Doss will be joining Jeff for a couple of songs (I think T’s car drives itself to Frederick now, as many times as he makes the journey!).

For the Dog Days piano prelude this week, JIMBOW will be tickling the ivories, or in this case, the plastics, and utilizing a short length of Bunsen burner tubing to add his Melodica to the mix … As usual, come early to find good seats for the evening and to catch the entire prelude. You can come upstairs at 7:15 pm (maybe 5 minutes or so earlier than that if Rob is ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For three-song cameo performers this week, we have some blues from the fabulous McTELL BROTHERS, J. KOLB from Annapolis, and Todd’s Pick this week is DAN KENNY. As time permits, we will be also hearing from the usual crew; poet JOHN HOLLY reciting his poems between other performers, and TODD C. WALKER himself, who also takes photos, helps emcee and helps run sound. TOMY WRIGHT is here this Monday, too, so we can expect some Tomy songs towards the end of the evening….

MISTER RON GOAD has come down from the mountain, so he and Tomy will be creating the wall of percussion that we have come to love and expect… Singing in front of these two gentlemen is like sliding down the laundry chute at the Ritz-Carlton, from the penthouse to the basement, and landing in one of those large, padded wicker baskets they have… It’s an exciting ride!

Ron is relieved to be back in civilization and circulation again; he managed to deal with two problems at once. He invited his overly-aggressive bookie to a weekend camping and fishing in the woods to make peace with him, and presented him with the cash that was owed together with a large bag of Snickers bars… There was a bit of a ruckus in the night, and in the morning neither the bookie nor the Snickers bars could be found… Ron drove home.

If you feel like some acoustic music this afternoon, to fill the void where synchronized swimming, etc. used to be, why not drop by Todd C. Walker’s Sunday Songwriters Songfest at Frederick Coffee Company around 4 pm? Today’s songwriters are the terrific Russ Haire, the ubiquitous T. Edwin Doss and the wonderful Woody Lissauer (who creates many musical multiples of himself – you’ll think you are listening to the Beach Boys and the Beatles at the same time…)! This coming Thursday, also at FCC, our own John Holly hosts another poetry evening, 7 pm – 9 pm – all are welcome to listen or to read!

Ex-Frederick singer-songwriter, raconteur and all-round cheerful person David Morreale is hosting a new event at Mick’s American Bistro – The Hardcore Troubador’s Tuesday Night Social Club and Open Mic, 7 pm – 10 pm. I’m playing there this week – come and check it out! David had a song challenge – to write a song about nothing – which I’ve done, so I’ll be singing that, among other sparkling gems from my back catalogue… Should be fun!

Please come out and join us at Brewer’s Alley this Monday to hear JEFF TALMADGE, plus our terrific line-up of cameo performers! We’ll have another great evening of music in Frederick’s best listening room!. . . )"

I'll be there next week.

At Brewer’s Alley . . .

. . .  Songwriters’ Showcase this Monday, March 5, Mr. Rod Deacy tells us. . .

". . . we welcome back one of my personal favorites, a dynamic performer and terrific songwriter well-known in the DC area -- JUSTIN TRAWICK! Mr. Trawick is a bundle of energy, with great chops and a bunch of literate and interesting songs, which adds up to a riveting show!

Justin always brings fans with him, too, which will be a shot in the arm – Brewer’s Alley has been a little less full than we like these last few weeks… I know it’s hard to get motivated to leave the warm and comfortable home cocoon on a winter evening – but we need you at Brewer’s Alley! Please come out and support FREE LIVE ACOUSTIC MUSIC on a Monday evening – you don’t have to stay up late, as we finish around 10:30 pm, but we need a full room, not only because it enables us to keep putting on the Showcase, but because it makes for a better experience for our performers – who play for free… Frederick is a culture-rich town that only stays that way with strong support!

For the piano prelude this week, we welcome Rhianon! As usual, come early to find good seats for the evening and to catch the entire 30 minutes of the prelude. You can come upstairs from 7:15 pm on (sometimes earlier if Sarah is ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For three-song cameo performers this week, we have Canadian-born now Maryland resident Eugene Benjamin, and the splendid duo of Kate Maguire  and Claudia SanSoucie known as Beggar’s Ride; Kate and Claudia are featuring in August. Todd’s Pick is Scott Barrett, a regular performer in local venues… We will also be hearing from the usual crew; poet John Holly reciting his poems in between other performers, Tomy Wright, playing percussion, then guitar and singing at the end of the evening, plus Todd C. Walker who also takes photos, helps emcee and helps run sound. We plan on Tomy, Todd and I all playing after the feature this week, as we haven’t had much microphone time recently…

Tomy One M Wright will be joined again by Ron Goad this week – together they form the Semi-Grateful Percussion Section…  (I figured Semi-Grateful was better than Almost Dead…) I promise that no other Showcase in the USA has percussion like us! And watch out this week, as Mister Goad says his “thoughts are turning to Spring,” whatever that means… Is he going to vacuum out his car again? Polish his djembe? Hammer out the dents in his hi-hat? Only he knows… I’m pretty sure it’s too soon for him to start wearing shorts again, but stranger things have happened…"
