Infinity . . .

(from James Madison:  A Biography by Ralph Ketcham)
". . . The finiteness of the human understanding betrays itself on all subjects, but more especially when it contemplates such as involve infinity. . . . The infinity of time and space forces itself on our conception, a limitation of either being inconceivable; that the mind prefers at once the idea of a self-existing cause to that of an infinite series of cause and effect, which augments, instead of avoiding the difficulty; and that it finds more facility in assenting to the self-existence of an invisible cause possessing infinite power, wisdom and goodness, than to the self-existence of the universe, visibly destitute of those attributes, and which may be the effect of them. In this comparative facility of conception and belief, all philosophical Reasoning on the subject must perhaps terminate. . ."

Man . . .

Courtesy of http://www.skicenkovice.info/skisnew-stick-man.adp
. . . must be careful. . . (and honest). . .

(from James Madison: A Biography by Ralph Ketcham)
". . . Madison first considered some questions of agrarian philosophy: what caused men to change from hunters to farmers? what instincts, if any, inclined men to become civilized? what ratio of plants to animals best suited human progress? and finally, what balances of nature must man be careful not to upset, lest he make the world unfit for human habitation? Especially important was plenty of pure air. "in all confined situations, from the dungeon to the crowded work-house, and from these to the compact population of overgrown cities," Madison declared, "the atmosphere becomes, in corresponding degrees, unfitted by reiterated use, for sustaining human life and health.". . ."

Similar . . .

?????

(from James Madison; A Biography by Ralph Ketchum)
". . . Madison then discussed even more explicitly the "party issues" before the nation. Aiming directly at Hamiltonian arguments that the government ought to favor the wealthy to consolidate the Union, he asserted that a republican government should insure political equality, encourage an equitable distribution of property, abstain from granting special privileges, and thereby diminish the unnecessary party strife caused by partisan measures. A balance of parties based on natural and inevitable differences would then serve the cause of freedom. Madison next asserted that the British government, far from being a good example of a balance of "king, lords, and commons," in fact was virtuous only insofar as public admirers of Britain, Madison meant his readers to think. The true model for a balance of powers that would prevent abuses was the American system, with its separation of the departments in the federal government and the division of powers between it and the states.  Madison counseled that "those who love their country, its repose, and its republicanism, will study to avoid the alternative" of disunion or tyranny by observing scrupulously the prescribed limits, and particularly by desisting from acts that would heighten jealousies and animosities. So much for Hamilton's programs to favor the commercial classes and to consolidate power in the federal government. . ."
