Held Together . . .

There was a time
When I was so unsure
Of how I would find
My way through tears and trouble.
This big world can
Look so scary
To a little boy
On his own.

It's held together by your love.
So secure sometimes it's frightening.
The thread connecting
All the right things
That help me to survive.
It's held together by your love.
It's so sure it strikes like lightning
A breeze refreshing
Me when I
Find that life is cruel.
It's held together by your love

I'm not one to run away
From each little storm.
Only fools refuse assistance
As they're carried downstream in the
Rushing foam

I look around,
Concerned for much
I see now.
I may have found
The rare elusive why and how
That everyone keeps searching
For, to bind or mend
All life's loose ends.

Watching . . .

There’s a boy in a room.
It’s a cavernous room,
With the walls all festooned
With the likenesses of
Sincere and humble, pious faces.

The eyes were watching,
Intently so.
Suspiciously watching,
But they weren’t the eyes
Of some omniscient, single, potent being.
They were the eyes of my fellow man,
And oh the things they did see.

By design or by fate,
From the boy grew the man,
And believing in magic,
Drew his comfort from what
They called his deep faith
And perseverance.

All those around him
And the vast majority believed
In it too,
So much resembling dependent infancy
I shudder. Shudder!

As a product of his time,
And of nurture through the years,
He pushed on where his intellect
Showed him how to proceed
Without any invasive deities.

Faces . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, by Jon Meacham)
". . . To John Adams, Jefferson wrote: "The truth is that the greatest enemies of the doctrines of Jesus are those calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them for the structure of a system of fancy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away [with] all this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this the most venerated reformer of human errors.". . . Optimism . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, by Jon Meacham)
". . . Jefferson hoped that subjecting religious sensibilities to free inquiry would transform faith from a source of contention into a force for good, for he knew that religion in one form or another was a perpetual factor in the world. The wisest course, then, was not to rail against it but to encourage the application of reason to questions of faith. The more rational that men became about religion, Jefferson believed, the better lives they would lead; in turn the life of the nation would become more stable and virtuous. . ."

The Meaning . . .

. . . of life??

Eat that pork.
Eat that ham.
Laugh til you choke on Billy Graham.
Moses, Aaron and Abraham,
They're all a waste of time.
It's your ass that's on the line.
Do what you want to.
Do what you will.
Just don't mess up your neighbor's thrill.
And when you pay the bill
Kindly leave a little tip,
And help the next poor sucker
On his one-way trip.

Big . . .

. . . shot

Everybody thinks he's a big, big shot
In the world of the buy and the sell.
Respect of the human is one thing,
But for lack of respect, you'll pay hell.

It's not unlike Hollywood
Where they're all very pretty
Dressed oh, so stylishly
Treating all others shitty,
While raking in millions
For pretending to be
Other people on screen
For the public to see.

For the former, it seems, adulation is there.
Although not on a scale with the latter.
The importance is inflated;
The esteem is immense,
Deep inside his own head, is the matter.
