Hours . . .

. . . guess that it's only natural to ponder time, hours, days etc.

The Hours (https://youtu.be/Cx-kdaFWm4Q) originally appeared on  the solo album "No Frills" performed on acoustic piano. Like many of my compositions, lyrics eventually came forth. Check out both versions,  and maybe even sing along . . . 

On and on flow the hours
Like rolling waves upon the sea.
And like so many and so varied flowers,
Each one some nectar for the bee.
We're keeping tabs and writing numbers,
Logging each minute in the book.
We have a choice to
Either dread the counting 
Or see the forest if we look.
Store the knowledge.
Hoard the wisdom.
Take the years
And just run like crazy.
Party’s only
What you make it.
Make it into the 
Best you can.
There’s no protection from the power
Generated everyday.
The blazing lights shine 
From each lofty tower
To illuminate the way.
Things that never occur to you
In the spring.
Become clear with each
Passing season.
All options must be on the table.
All points of view be understood.
And if you don’t do ev’ry thing you’re able,
Make sure you do those which are good.

Ego . . .

                                           
Sometimes I can get my point across,
And I do it rather well.
You can see
What I think
About me.

It's just my ego.
It gets the best of me.
It's just my ego
It just won't let me be,
It just won't let me be alone.
It's not one of my most redeeming qualities.
Still though it serves me rather well sometimes.
It won't be easy to just let it go,
It's just my ego.

I take such great pride in what I do.
Everyone should take some too.
Don't you think;
Pride in me,
Not in you?

There's a fine distinction between confidence and pride.
There's a fine distinction that I'll never know.
Cloaked with some discretion you emerge from the inside.
I emerge in all my glory. 
What is there to hide?

Mother said that I would never make
Any friends if I don't see
What I'm like,
If I don't lose some pride.

As I usually do, I've taken the chord changes to the new tune "Eyes" and stretched-out a bit, improvising on those chords. This is one thing that I enjoy so much about playing the piano. When it goes well, it is entertaining, satisfying and an excellent (and productive) way to spend some time . . .

28721 . . .

For those interested in this sort of thing, here is our most recent recording of "28721" (the average number of days in a human life; this number may have gone down over the last year but you get the idea). Some will note that often my songs don't have what are considered traditional choruses, at least as regards lyrics, where a lyrical/musical "hook" is repeated, usually after the verses and/or bridges (if any). Expertise in this aspect of the craft is one I admittedly am bereft of. In this instance there are rather chorus-like sections occurring where one would expect them, sans the lyrical repetition. Anyway, this is good enough to share and thanks to anyone generous enough to spend the time to listen and to all those (Dave Kelly, Harry Maben, Ray Jozwiak, Bill Phelan & Bill Pratt) who helped arrive at this mix:
