Familiar? . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson; The Art of Power by Jon Meacham)
". . . Debt-ridden, France faced a supreme test. In the mid-1780s, partly because of its spending on the American Revolution, the Bourbon government of Louis XVI was in a long-term financial crisis, exacerbated by widespread hunger and by anger over the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. Jefferson was shocked by the poverty he saw among ordinary Frenchmen: Patsy always remembered the beggars who surrounded their carriage as they first traveled to Paris. . . The financial and political difficulties facing the monarchy and the French nation were immense. Taxes were unequal and haphazardly collected; the heaviest burden of the cost of the Crown and its expensive ways and wars fell less on nobles or clergy, who were largely exempt, and more on commoners, creating understandable tension and popular hostility. . ."

Sailing . . .

Sailing on an emerald sea.
Advertisements and color photographs
Don’t mean that much to me.
Poolside cocktails;
Love in the sand.
It’s like a dream that just came true.
I just don’t know how much that I can stand.
Many temptations are swimming round my head.
So many places that you’d think I’d like to be instead but . . .

I’m always thinking of you.
I hope you think of me too.
I only want to be where you are.

Riding to the Wellington Club.
I’d have a driver and he’d take me there.
I’d just sit back and put my two feet up.
Money doesn’t measure the man.
All you can do is spend it; spend again.
It only goes so far. You can’t pretend.
Many times over I’ve seen it slip away.
I’d like to live that life sometime
But baby not today. Cause . . .

I get a feeling when I’m with you
That nothing else captures the same way.
You know it’s true.

If you see the pyramids rise
Above the desert sand into the sky,
A greater sight you just won’t realize.
River fights its way to the sea.
Worthy opponents just can’t hinder it.
It always gets to where it wants to be.
Just like the river, I see my destiny.
It’s right there in your very eyes
Each time you look at me and . . .

Never Suspected . . .

Are leaving on a Monday?
Have you made up your mind?
Is there anything left
That I can do to give me more time?
I’ve heard the old story,
It’s not something I said
If I didn’t say anything at all.

In the darkness I can see your form
As you lie there asleep.
Something’s wrong with this picture—
You resting peacefully,
I, in this heat.

I never suspected
That you were a calendar girl.

Six days of the week
I’m working to please you.
But when we’re alone
You’re just making plans.
The pencil and that faded old notebook
Have taken away what has made me a man.

Was it Tuesday, was it Wednesday?
Am I wasting my time?
And how much does it matter,
As this thing ages, it still isn’t wine?
I still hope though, anxiously,
You can find in your heart
One more reason to give me another chance.

Sunday evening, and I lie awake.
Seems there’s no use in sleeping.
Heard the sound of the door behind you,
Now all I hear is the sound of you leaving.

Here . . .

I’ve never been one to follow trends.
I won’t be with the crowd
When they round the bend.
But I’ll be here until the very end
‘Cause, where it’s at is here with you.

Fancy parties leave me cold and drained,
Discos, crowds and posturing in vain
Only feed some silly appetite unnamed.
Where it’s at is here with you.

I don’t want to see the moon,
Fly to Paris, May or June.
I just want a one-way fare
To anyplace where you’ll be there.

I don’t need gold or precious things,
Fancy clothes or even diamond rings.
I just want the thrill that being with you brings.
‘Cause, where it’s at is here with you.

For fame or power, I have no desire.
I don’t crave acceptance, or to be admired.
I’m just happy sitting with you by the fire.
Where it’s at is here with you.

Rides . . .

Many things I'd like to hide
From deep within my own dark side.
Much proposed and much was tried
In that horribly menacing slow ride.

Somehow we managed to survive.
A few got hurt but no one died.
It wasn't sad but some still cried
After all undertaking that one slow ride.

They said there'd be joy but we know that they lied.
They said it was nothing, our entreaties denied.
They said we'd be home soon, just take it in stride,
As they led us through hell in that long, slow ride.

Principles . . .

"Hold faithfulness and sincerity as first principles."
-Confucius

(from https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/house-republicans-tout-infrastructure-funding-voted/story?id=82429064)
". . . In November, Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., was one of 205 House Republicans to vote against the bipartisan, $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill, calling it irresponsible and the "Green New Deal in disguise."
. . . (recently) he took to Twitter to tout funding from the bill he voted against -- highlighting a $70 million expansion of the Port of Virginia in Norfolk -- one of the busiest and deepest ports in the United States. . .
Shortly after voting against the measure last fall, Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., celebrated its hundreds of millions in funding for a stalled highway project in Birmingham. . . . Last week, Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, touted new funding for a flood control project from the package, which she opposed last year, decrying it at the time as a "so-called infrastructure bill." . . . Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, a freshman lawmaker who also voted against the infrastructure bill, celebrating new "game-changing" funding to upgrade locks along the Upper Mississippi River. . . "
