Aces . . .

When I see that look upon your face
I know that I’ve been dealt an ace of hearts.
Something starts.
Pulse is pounding like a conga drum.
The blood goes rushing to and from my head,
Turns my face to red.

So ante-up and hit me once then hit me twice.
The stakes are high.
You know I’ve got to keep as cool as ice.
This game we’re in together
Could end as quickly as it starts.
But I’ll just take my chances.
I’ll just take my chances
Cause I know that I have you
And you’re my . . .
Ace of hearts.
I know that I have you and you’re my
Ace of hearts.

Deal me in I’m staying for the course
And if I lose don’t feel remorse for me.
You will always be
In my every breath and in my soul.
When chips are down you take control and then
Bring me back again.

Deluded . . .

Would I just dare to review all the facts
And reach a conclusion,
And accordingly act?
Is it genuine influence
That these actors exert
To convince me that truth
Is a thing to pervert?
Is there nothing not tried
To increase my confusion?
Is the price well worthwhile
To promote this delusion?

All That's Gold . . .

 . . . doesn't glitter

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/eric-clapton-s-covid-vaccine-conspiracies-mark-sad-final-act-ncna1281619?fbclid=IwAR0LCeJky_KUs0-
By Jeff Slate)
". . . (Eric) Clapton may have been branded Rolling Stone magazine’s second-greatest guitarist of all time, and is a three-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has inspired legions to try to follow in his footsteps, but the shiny veneer papering over his belief systems has always been paper thin. . . Since last year, Clapton has repeatedly used his vast platform to do his utmost to undermine expert medical advice. . . . He has opposed lockdowns and made suspicious claims about the dangers of vaccines. This spring, he said . . . that scientific studies, expert opinions and public health recommendations extolling the importance of vaccines were “propaganda,” . . . But many fans still seem to have been caught by surprise. In a lengthy piece this month by writer David Browne in Rolling Stone — which has treated the artist with reverence for more than half a century — Clapton is painted as a conspiracy peddler of the highest order, and a racist of the lowest. . . The article also revisits Clapton’s 1976 racist rant from a stage in Birmingham, England, where he repeatedly shouted slurs and voiced support for the British demagogue Enoch Powell, known for his divisive, race-baiting “rivers of blood” speech in 1968. . . lapton has joked about or laughed off accusations of racism, as well as a 1968 Rolling Stone interview where he low-key insults Jimi Hendrix’s guitar playing and suggests the allure of Hendrix and other Black artists has to do with their genitalia. . . Clapton certainly has his defenders, especially among conservative anti-vaxxers. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, himself no stranger to crackpot conspiracy theories or race baiting, tweeted a picture of himself with Clapton backstage during the guitarist’s recent tour of red state arenas. . . But Clapton’s fans may be turning their backs on this legend amid what is likely to be his final act. . . It may be a sad end for one of the legends of the Golden Age of rock and roll, but it also feels fitting. Bigotry and ignorance, in the age of the internet, has a way of catching up with you. In a time when many of us are re-examining how our life experiences and information sources have shaped our world views, Clapton’s racism and conspiracy theories can no longer be ignored. . . "

Super . . .

Should every man yield to the yearning unashamed
Without hypocrisy and wastefulness;
Squander the strength he’s been endowed with;
Feign superiority as tunnel vision’s all he sees?

I’m trying to develop a superman;
Dionysus evolving into perfect humanity.

Gadding about helping each other get along
Won’t make us build the kind of man I see.
Inferiors are weak copies of betters
Printed on bad paper from old and worn-out plates now gone.

Selection, survivors mastering;
Bettering the species, irrespective of
Everything you’ve ever learned
About what’s right or wrong.

You hear the word, you’re quoting scripture that you learned
Originating from a deity.
But should that motivate your actions?
Such self-serving rewarding scheme.
Yours or mine, that’s what both seem.

Words . . .

(from The Premonition: A Pandemic Story by Michael Lewis)
". . .  I am still having issues in VA with leaders avoiding the use of the term pandemic and then not wanting to implement key portions of the VA pandemic plan because this is not a pandemic," he wrote. "They will not say that word or use that word . . . They expect to see the term pandemic used by CDC and WHO. CDC continues to say this is not a pandemic . . . My response is that a pandemic is not defined by what is happening in the US - it is defined by what is happening across the world (pan=all, demic=people). . . I know that this is not CDC's intent but it is creating problems for bureaucrats who suffer from malignant obedience." . . . He and Richard and others had spent years creating and selling the ideas that would, if quickly seized upon, prevent a lot of Americans from dying. Those ideas were useful, and yet no one in authority seemed willing to use them. "We were going nuts," said Carter. . . "

Demurred . . .

(from https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/17/us/politics/coronavirus-vaccines-republicans.html)
". . . After Sherri Tenpenny, a Cleveland-area doctor, falsely suggested during a hearing last month in the Ohio House of Representatives that Covid vaccines left people “magnetized” and could “interface” with 5G cellular towers, Republican lawmakers thanked her for her “enlightening” testimony. . .“We don’t control conservative media figures so far as I know — at least I don’t,” Senator Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah, told The New York Times recently. . . ". . . I think it’s an enormous error for anyone to suggest that we shouldn’t be taking vaccines.” . . . Anti-vaccination sentiment isn’t new to Republican voters. During the 2016 Republican presidential primary race, a number of candidates, including Donald J. Trump, repeated debunked theories that vaccines caused autism in children. Around that time, Republican state legislators began opposing laws that would tighten vaccine requirements for children. . . As Covid cases across the country rise, nearly all recent hospitalizations and deaths have occurred among unvaccinated people, White House officials have said. . . Mr. Trump has eagerly taken credit for the accelerated development process of the vaccines, and has urged Americans to get vaccinated. (He did, however, quietly receive a vaccine in private before he left office, rather than hold a public event for the shot that might have encouraged his supporters to follow his lead.) . . .Less than a week later, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican minority leader, encouraged Americans to get vaccinated, citing his experience as a childhood survivor of polio. . . “We have not one, not two, but three highly effective vaccines, so I’m perplexed by the difficulty we have finishing the job,” he said. . . Yet when asked by a reporter whether some of the challenge could stem from the words of members of his own party, Mr. McConnell demurred. . ."
