Repair . . .

First thing there's protocol.
Then there's this thing they call compassion.
Throw in empathy and a little consideration.

Can't you see behind the curtain;
Through the cloud of rancid air?
There's a needy child for certain
And the damage that's done requires repair.

The ordinary things
You can expect from ordinary men.
There's no option for "extra."
"Sub" is the best that he possibly can.

Vain attempts at saving face.
Rationalization from those who thought
He was a savior.
He is their savior.

Just call your handyman
To estimate what this will cost.
Calculate long-term effects.
Inventory the loss.

Number . . .

. . . two

It's imperative to in sequence go,
When presenting wares,
Be they many or few.
Place carefully, don't merely throw,
whether great in number, or simply pairs,
In order from the first, to two.

Mix . . .

. . . number one . . .

Number one (of two) mixes of instrumental improvisations on the chord changes to "Superman", a recently completed composition of mine.  Two separate solos, one on electric piano/one using a guitar patch, edited into a call-and-response track.  Number two to follow shortly.

Alarming . . .

(from The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump; 37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President by Bandy Lee, M.D., M.Div.)
". . . It doesn't take a psychiatrist to notice that our president is mentally compromised. Members of the press have come up with their own diagnostic nomenclature calling the president a "mad king" (Dowd 2017), a "nut job" (Collins 2017), and "emotionally unhinged" (Rubin 2017). Conservative columnist George Will (2017) writes that the president has a "disorderly mind." By speaking out as mental health professionals, we lend support and dignity to our fellow citizens who are justifiably alarmed by the president's furious tirades, conspiracy fantasies, aversion to facts, and attraction to violence. We can offer a hand helping the public understand behaviors that are unusual and alarming but that can all too easily be rationalized and normalized. . ."

". . . Bandy Xenobia Lee . . . attracted attention for organizing a conference at Yale on professional ethics surrounding the mental health of Donald Trump. She withheld her views at the conference but later prominently criticized the American Psychiatric Association for changing an ethical guideline called the Goldwater rule with the Trump presidency. In March 2017, the association had expanded the rule to restrict not just diagnosis but any comment on the mental health of public figures absent a personal examination, misleadingly calling it a "reaffirmation." This change alarmed Lee and her colleagues enough to lead to her conference and, later, to co-authoring The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, a book of essays that warned against the dangers of Trump's mental instability. . ."

Highs . . .

. . . and lows . . .

Just look at the morning paper
And tell me what you see.
Is something very wrong
Or maybe my eyes deceive me?
Somewhere in the local section;
A buried paragraph;
Someone who had the time to care
And the character to act.

The higher the highs,
The lower the lows,
The older I get
That's the way that it goes.
The more that I think that I want
The less that I need,
Because I realize how precious
And how short
This time with you may be.

When you're young and your biggest worry's
What game you want to play.
Such innocence is just surpassed
By the naivete.
Take good with the worst
And better.
You know they're not the same.
Youth somehow brings them all together.
Different they are
But subtle the shades
.
Youth really
Is only wasted,
If never
You've tasted
All the bitter
As well as sweet.

I hope you don't misunderstand me
Or what I want to say.
It's nothing revolutionary.
Ignorance won't make this go away.
Nobody likes a busybody.
Nobody knows it all.
There's one thing I can tell you certain,
Take none for granted
Short or the tall.
