A Whirlwind . . .

. . . of life (and thoughts) . . .

. . . mastering for a future release;  practicing music for a new Mystic I performance;  documenting compositions for copyright;  trying to compose new things;  'observing' tradition;   cooking for family;  watching one of Christopher Hitchens' last interviews; wondering what to write about . . .

Life is good!

New Consciousness. . .

(from "Reclaiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World" by John Shelby Spong,
 ©2011 John Shelby Spong)
". . . As post-Darwinians we now know that there never was a perfect creation.  All life has evolved from a single cell into our present self-conscious, enormously complex human life, which is, for the time being at least, at the top of the evolutionary ladder.  Since there was no perfect creation, then there could not have been a "fall" from perfection.  One cannot fall from a status one has never possessed.  If we have not fallen from perfection, we do not need to be saved, redeemed or rescued.  So the way Jesus has traditionally been interpreted vanishes into irrelevance.  One can artificially resuscitate a dying form only as long as the presuppositions undergirding that form are still believable.  The human experience, however, still cries out for some other explanation of this experience.  What is it?

We are self-conscious creatures.  All living things are survival-oriented.  Plants stretch to receive the light of the sun in order to live.  Animals fight for life or flee danger in order to survive.  Neither plant life nor animal life, however, is aware of its survival drive.  Human beings are.  When self-conscious creatures make their own survival their highest goal, they then organize their world around that need.

Paul's experience of human life was correct.  His explanation was wrong.  His experience of Christ as life-giving love was correct.  His explanation of how that love was manifested in Jesus' life was wrong.

Can one find salvation by being rescued from this fatal flaw in our humanity, as Paul seemed to believe?  I do not think so.  We can, however, find wholeness in the experience of being lifted beyond these boundaries.  I am now convinced that this experience of being lifted into a new consciousness was the heart of what the Jesus experience was and it is this experience alone to which Christians must witness. . . "

Just as long. . .

. . . as I don't have to bloody my hands. . .

I'll be your Blood Brother
By your side through thick and thin
I'll be your Blood Brother
Just as long as I don't have to bloody
My hands hands

Bar rooms sure have a funny way
Of bringing loyalty out in a man
Buy a drink and tell a joke
And buddy you've got you a friend
But keep a good eye upon that friend
Because he really doesn't give two hoots
And don't say anything about his Mom
His  girlfriend or his army boots

I'll be your Blood Brother
By your side through thick and thin
I'll be your Blood Brother
Just as long as I don't have to bloody
My hands hands

Walked into an auto-mo-showroom
I need some wheels but got no money to spend
When a guy with an ugly tie
Walks out and acts like he's my long-lost friend
I said hey Buddy I've a purpose here
And if you please I will accomplish my goal
So don't you slap me on the back again
Cause if you do I might just lose my control

I'll be your Blood Brother
By your side through thick and thin
I'll be your Blood Brother
Just as long as I don't have to bloody
My hands hands

So please be careful when you meet someone
Who'll make a promise at the drop of a hat
And don't provide them with encouragement
You will regret the day you offered him that
Cause everybody needs some empathy
But just how willing
And how far will they go
To really help you when the chips are down
Can they be trusted half as far as you throw them

I'll be your Blood Brother
By your side through thick and thin
I'll be your Blood Brother
Just as long as I don't have to bloody
My hands hands

Today . . .

. . . is the day AMBIENCE & WINE goes on sale at www.cdbaby.com

Ambience & wine, two precious and plentiful elements of which I highly recommend consumption in mass quantities.  In this particular incarnation, music is provided to contribute to the 'ambience' portion of the equation.

Creative musician, Baltimore-based Ray Jozwiak offers recordings and performances of eclectic, instrumental solo piano (and piano-based) compositions that have been referred to as 'Fractured Jazz' laced with generous amounts of 'Improvisational Terror Tactics'.

A local jazz pianist's music inspired the quick-moving 'L-Street' pitting left-hand call against right-hand response and opening the album in a sprightly manner.  'Ooh Bee Aah Bop' (from the not-too-distant past) is an improvised, sampled choir with percussion followed by a contemplative, solo outing called merely 'Foisfois'.  A sensuous, x-rated-movie-like 'My World'  throbs incessantly behind sampled electronic keyboards and instruments. 'LVJ's jazz-inflected variations follow, again solo, acoustic, pianoforte proceeded by 'McCafferty's Piano' which asks the musical question for which I'm still dying to know the answer.  A moody, ethereal 'Number One' exposition is next with 'Hope' wrapping up this aural delicacy.

'Hope' you do enjoy it and . . . please, tell a friend!

My math. . .

. . . skills were never really very good. . .

. . . but lately I've been encounter some math that, although I may not fully understand, I actually happen to enjoy and would like to spread the word.

(from MySpace) . . . "El Sledge (+) is the combination of Stephen Sroka on drums, and Matthew Graboski on guitar/vocals/keys. Their music is the aural sound explosion of rage and beauty, turning in on itself as it races through time and space. The duo has comprised a conceptual duality through their music, taking the form of an oncoming stampede ripe with harrowing echoes brimming with the unbridled certainty of pure rock force. . . "

And thanks to the magnanimous young Mr. Graboski. who is appearing this Wednesday, April 4 at (and here's where more math comes in) Joe Squared, Station North in Baltimore,   33% (I can't get away from it) of OHO will make a brief appearance that evening presenting a smattering of the fine compositions of the senior Mr. Graboski (Jay) for your dancing and dining pleasure.  Music begins at 6PM.
