Morton 2 . . .

One day, Morton the mantis was feasting upon a sumptuous array of beetles, grasshoppers and crickets when, off in the distance, he spotted what appeared to him to be, a most gorgeous lady-mantis in obvious search for food. This, thought Morton, could be the fulfillment of his every dream. A mate with whom he could share his insect bounty, and maybe even his very future, a prospect for which he always had yearned. The lady-mantis lured Morton with her pheromones. Suddenly, Morton felt an inescapable urge to dance. He danced and danced approaching her ever so closely.  His dance brought him within touching distance of her and he found that she seemed agreeable to his close presence now.  He began, without fully understanding how or why, to climb upon her back as she was much larger than he in size. Then, as conscious thought and action grabbed a backseat and instinct took over, the two became one in a timeless tango of passion and procreation. Then after a period, as females of the mantis persuasion often do, she bit off his head and devoured his corpse for nourishment.

Morton 1 . . .

(source: http://animals.mom.me/stages-praying-mantis-life-cycle-6282.html)

Morton the mantis came of age in, what seemed to him, an inordinately lengthy period of time. He dreamed, joyfully, of the moment when he and his mantis-mate would finally 'join' to lead a life of bliss (connubial and otherwise).  Slogging through adolescence, Morton found himself larger in size than before; certainly larger than all of the other nymphs. He began to shed exoskeletons periodically and occasionally tended to be sluggish and unable to eat. Finally that annoying molting process ended at the beginning of summer, and Morton found himself to be a mature adult.

Beginning . . .

The reality is now starting
To sink into my prickly old brain
There will actually be
Opportunities now
To devote some attention to me

It's not that I'm totally neglected
'Cause commitments to other things teem
But at times I seemed
Truly disjointed
By conception of relevance deemed

Obligations have been requited
That were owed to compulsory things
Now the future is brimming
With options to choose
I sit perched at a new beginning

What . . .

. . . a fit!

(from The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen)
". . . The emperor came to them with his most distinguished cavaliers. The two swindlers raised their arms as though they were holding something and said, "Just look at these trousers! Here is the jacket! This is the cloak!" and so forth. "They are as light as spider webs! You might think that you didn't have a thing on, but that is the good thing about them.". . . "Yes," said the cavaliers, but they couldn't see a thing, for nothing was there. . . "Would his imperial majesty, if it please his grace, kindly remove his clothes." said the swindlers. "Then we will fit you with the new ones, here in front of the large mirror.". . . The emperor took off all his clothes, and the swindlers pretended to dress him, piece by piece, with the new ones that were to be fitted. They took hold of his waist and pretended to tie something about him. It was the train. Then the emperor turned and looked into the mirror. . . "Goodness, they suit you well! What a wonderful fit!" they all said. "What a pattern! What colors! Such luxurious clothes!". . . "

Of Men . . .

"The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry."
-Robert Burns

. . . like when you have a list of things to get from the hardware store, so you can fix your dining room light fixture and 'intrusive' cable and television cords and your car will not start, but the battery is fine, a problem of which you were pretty much aware, which began a month ago but manifested itself more clearly as the radio and cd player intermittently cut out when you touched the turn signal, but as of late began happening more frequently, like when you made turns or hit bumps, but allowed you to travel about 3hours from home before manifesting itself again, in the form of not starting at all, even with a hot shot, on a Saturday afternoon, bout 1:30 when most garages have closed, not to reopen until Monday so you were unable to make it to the hardware store and therefore, unable to accomplish any of the things you intended to and so on and so forth . . .

Consequences. . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/trump-praises-dictator-has-consequences-n883036)
". . . So he's a very smart guy. He's a great negotiator. But I think we understand each other.
(Fox News' Brett) BAIER: But he's still done some really bad things. . . TRUMP: Yeah, but so have a lot of other people done some really bad things. I could go through a lot of nations where a lot of bad things were done. . . Besides the shoulder-shrugging or the muted reaction from GOP lawmakers (that’s now the best way to know when they’re comfortable with something the president said), there’s an important consequence to Trump’s praise of dictators and authoritarian strongmen: What happens when the United States is no longer the world’s moral compass? . . ."
