Dear . . .

. . . venue . . .

With the 2019 season now over, I am writing to acquaint you with OHO 's music  and in hopes of a performance opportunity during the off-season and/or spots on your 2020 calendar. . . OHO began as a Baltimore underground band that came out of nowhere and played music the chroniclers swore was years ahead of its time. Due in part to a sense of humor and an 'unerring humanity,' OHO, like The Dude, abides. After more than forty years of evolution and refinement, current OHO (now consisting of founders Jay Graboski and David Reeve, reunited with long-time musical collaborator Ray Jozwiak) now cranks out a bevy of thought-provoking original material blended with some classics and sophisticated covers-an intelligent alternative to the 'staple' Delmarva cover band repertoire. A sample of OHO’s recent activities can be seen and heard at http://www.ohomusic.com. . . I can send you a digital downloadable files (via WeTransfer) or a digital [CD Baby.com] download card (via USPS) of our latest band release GAZEBO upon your request or meet with you at your convenience. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Punctuality. . .

. . . Dreams . . .
The bar was moderately full and the manager said we could play.  As a matter of fact, he said we could begin at any time. But we didn't even know where the stage was or how to access the venue to load our gear in.  Meantime, more and more people flowed into the room(s).  MANY, MANY more people flowed into the room.  Now the manger was sounding annoyed.  "You can start whenever you're ready!"  Ready?  How could we be ready when we still haven't located a door?  (Flash to a parking garage) Equipment unloaded from vehicles and stacked ready to be brought in.  Finally, directions were received regarding access to an elevator and the venue.  Two of us began to load the gear into the elevator, while the remaining man agreed to park the cars.  Wheeling what appears to be a Leslie tone cabinet into the lift I suddenly and regretfully realize that . . .

I FORGOT TO BRING MY 'OHO' UNIFORM!!!!
AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

The Gig . . .

. . . from hell . . .

. . . although there have probably been many others worse, or at least as bad, than this. . . it certainly seemed beyond belief at the time.

The bear of it all was that we didn't even play.  The whole thing seemed like some long, drawn-out, absurd awards ceremony-type of thing with lots of gratuitous thank-yous, gushing and fawning. Meantime we were simply anxious.  Anxious about when we would play.  Anxious about setting-up. Anxious about how long we would take to set-up and anxious about how long they expected us to take to set-up.

And then. . . just like that . . . it was over!  They didn't even ask us to set-up, to play, to get ready to set-up or get ready to play.  What a downer!!  And we were in the back-end of the huge venue, not really sure how far we were from where we had parked and where we had left our gear in anticipation of playing.

The other guys seemed to have gotten their gear packed back into their vehicles and I was the last but not quite sure where my stuff actually was.  We did locate it and there was confusion as to where the best exit was located from which I should leave.

Then an employee emphatically told me that I had to have everything removed within a short time period to make way for the following event, which seemed unreasonably short.  And without explanation I found myself outside, with my vehicle, ready for loading but somehow the vehicle slipping from within my control.  It actually drifted downhill, into traffic on the road and a semi merged mysteriously between my car and me. I watched helplessly as the car sped, driver-less, ahead, downhill quickly beyond my reach (as if I could physically have stopped it alone anyway) until it crashed into a wall at the end of the road where only left and right were the only options had there been an actual driver.

Soon I found myself with Pam, pouring out my heart in explanation and saying, "If it had not been a dream I may have been able to DO SOMETHING!"  But I said this to her in my dream. . .

. . . and then I awoke.

(from http://www.wicasta.com/blogs/is-afton-live-a-scam-any-worse-than-venues/)". . . Every band who has a web site, MySpace or ReverbNation page has likely heard from Afton Live. From what I can gather, the company mass e-mails bands, preying upon the younger musicians who are excited about playing anywhere at any time. If you decide to do a show, you quickly realize that you’re expected to sell tickets to the event. The more tickets you sell, the more money you make (though far less than Afton keeps, and far less than you’d make at a regular gig). The order that the bands take the stage is determined by who sells the most tickets. In short, what Afton Live does is book venues and then find bands to play on the bill; bands who are willing to sell tickets mostly to their friends and relatives, and then perform for next to nothing. Apparently there are plenty of bands out there who are willing to do just that. . .

In the final analysis, I believe that Afton Live is a scam. Not because people are being cheated, but because Afton Live preys upon the needs of up and coming musicians. Inexperienced musicians believe that all they have to do is keep playing, even if they have to do it for free, and they will eventually reach the big time. Sooner or later some producer will discover them and they’ll be on their way. So while what Afton Live does is not illegal in any way, it’s certainly immoral in my book. . ."

Brewer's. . .

(
(from Rod Deacey, Frederick (MD)-area musician, songwriter, performer, impressario)
". . . At Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase this Monday, Jan 14, we are delighted to welcome back JASON MYLES GOSS, who I first met when he played for me at the late, lamented WestSide café. Since those days, Jason has been busy touring around the U.S. and recording. He moved from Massachusetts to Brooklyn, NY, about six years ago and his latest CD, his fourth, called Radio Dial, has met with critical acclaim across the country…He’s really good – come and check him out!

“This one-man-show reminded everyone packed into the small venue what live acoustic performances are all about and why the up-and-coming deserve to be heard.”
– Dissolver Magazine

We are happy that COLETTE ROHAN has changed her working hours, so she is able to come and play some piano preludes for us this year! She starts this week – come out and hear her play!  As per normal, come early to find good seats for the evening and to catch the entire prelude. You can come upstairs at 7:15 pm (maybe 5 minutes or so earlier than that if we’re ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For three-song cameo performers this Monday, we are happy to see the return of RICARDO – THE DIVINING SAGE, plus BASSWOOD, and advertising his Feb 18 feature spot, BRETT BARRY! Brett is also helping me tweak the sound this week, so if you see him lurking behind the soundboard – that’s why! We will be also hearing from the regular crew; poet JOHN HOLLY, reciting his poems between other performers, and TODD C. WALKER, who also takes photos, helps emcee and helps run sound. TOMY WRIGHT is with us for the first time this new season, and will play some guitar and sing after the feature. . . "
