Writing . . .

I find that these days, I love writing. Writing just about anything, with possibly my favoriite - writing music.  I don't necessarily mean transcribing, or writing down the notes (although I do enjoy that TOO), but I mean composing, working through melodies, chord progressions and many times, lyrics. Somewhere in the mid 80s, I began a creative, yet academic, exercise of writing as many songs as I could.  Being inspired by much of the good pop music of the time, and much encouragement from budding singer-songwriter communities, I was averaging one new song per month.  Maybe no record output, but very satisfactory to me for my own purposes.  Now, in my attempt to capture some old demos (from cassette tapes) to digital, I am discovering many nice memories from the past.

This tune was written purposely to utilize the romantic, simple, trite, english of tin-pan alley plus, expanding my production chops, I decided to perform it in a doo-wop style singing multiple vocal parts acapella.

Order . . .

(based upon https://www.quora.com/How-do-recording-artists-decide-on-the-order-of-the-songs-on-their-CDs)
There isn't a rule of thumb , but there is planning. Look at it as a Classical concert, grouping songs in "moods", then intentionally create longer pauses between the groups.

When Lou Reed was ordering the tracks on New York. He struggled to find the right musical and topical arc until someone suggested he put them in the order in which they were recorded. In that order, the tracks told the story he was hoping for. Y

In a traditional pop context, records were sequenced with the hits or prospective singles "up front" - typically the lead single would be the first song and the other expected singles would follow to round out the first side.

Some try to make sure that successive songs are not in the same key.

The number one track (and usually the last) are the 'great' tracks that leave an impression.

If it's a concept album that tells a story through the songs, then the order is pretty much fixed to begin with. If it is just a collection of singles, they might look at the dynamics - try and mix up the heavy and the soft, the fast and the slow, etc.

Put a lot of thought into the order of the songs to create a good “flow” and the best overall listening experience from start to finish. Open with a song that represents your overall sound fairly well, and break up the “mood” every 3 songs or so.

The whole process is just about placing familiar tracks somewhere in the middle, intros and soon to be released tracks at the beginning and the less appealing at the end - it's about fluidity and using the songs at the beginning as singles as they help sell the album.

It's given a lot less thought than it used to. Nowadays most albums are bought online and when you download it you can put it in any order you want. If you are like me you will put your favourites first and the fillers at the end. Another thing to come into it is the shuffle mode on most players nowadays.

Order . . .

". . . Songs rarely play in a randomly determined order; artists and bandmates often agonize over the playlist for weeks or months. . . Think of an album like a movie or a book. Directors and writers order their scenes and chapters in a very specific way to illuminate narrative and thematic content, and in any good film or piece of literature, each section builds off the others so that there’s a satisfying conclusion. . . But . . . it’s not something that calls attention to itself, since each part works together organically to make this seamless whole. . . taking care not to make songs appear one after the other if they are too similar in structure, tone or style. . .the first and last songs of every album—the intro and outro songs, as I’m going to call them—hold special importance. These are the tracks that introduce the listener to the artist’s world and compel you to come back again. . ."

Thoughts . . .

. . . behind the songs . . .

(from Facebook)
Ty Ford
18 hrs
How often have you thought, "Hey, could I be a songwriter? I get these ideas from time to time. Sometimes words or phrases just pop into my head. I never write them down because, well, I'm not a songwriter." Really? Why NOT?
You might be surprised to learn that that's just one of the many way in which songwriters collect their song ideas. How many ways ARE there? Find out this coming Tuesday night at Germano's.
"The Thoughts Behind The Songs" at Germano's cabaret brings you close to three seasoned writers and a jazz pianist as they explain the process that brings their music to life.
Join me and Ellis Woodward, John M. Seay, Sahffi Lynne and Ray Jozwiak as they explain the process that preceded each of their songs. Ask questions! Don't be surprised if there's a different process for each song. Armed with this information, who knows what you could become!?!?
Tuesday March 28th. Tuesday night means light traffic and easy parking. Germano's 300 S. High St. in Little Italy. Come for dinner and the show. Doors open at 6pm. The show starts at 7:30pm. There's a $10 charge in addition to whatever pleases you from Germano's very tasty menu. (I have personal experience with the menu.)
Tickets are available for a limited time online here: http://bit.ly/2jguMpX
At some point, if there are any seats left, you'll have to call Germano's directly. 410.752.4515
See you there? and bring a pad and pencil to take notes......

Songs . . .

(from Baltimore's Ty Ford)
". . .Tuesday March 28 will be a special night for me. It will be the first in what I hope may be a series of songwriter showcases I'm helping to set up at Germano's in Little Italy. . . Earlier this year in talking with Cyd Wolf, Germano's Executive Producer after the "Old Part of Town" show, I mentioned singer/songwriters. Cyd said she'd like a Tuesday night event. I came back with the idea of four singer/songwriters, each one telling the story of how a song came to be and then playing it. Maybe a little audience Q&A after each song. Two rounds, a short break and then two more rounds. Not an original format, but one that has worked in Nashville (among other places) for years. . . I chose Singer/Songwriters Ellis Woodward, John M. Seay, Sahffi Lynne and Gonzo Jazz pianist Ray Jozwiak for the first flight. All seasoned artists. All with long lists of original material. All of whom, in my opinion, are hard workers at their craft and deserving of recognition. Please join me and these four fine artists. . . Please take a moment to put us on your calendar. You can make reservations right online right now at the link below. . . Tuesday March 28. Germano's Cabaret doors open at 6:00pm. Come, enjoy the lovely menu. The music starts at 7:30pm. Germano's Cabaret only seats 80. If you haven't been to a show there, you've missed a truly fine venue for intimate performances. See you there for this special night. . . Please forward this post if you will. Oh, and if you have thoughts of who you’d like to hear at the next event, please let me know!
https://www.facebook.com/events/1758634277789502/. . ."

More About . . .

. . . the artists . . .

. . . who will be at Germano’s on special night of entertainment in their cabaret, “The Thoughts Behind the Songs,” on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. Doors open at 6pm. Music at 7:30pm. $10 cover, at the door or online tickets here: http://bit.ly/2jguMpX.  Join prominent Baltimore singer-songwriters and composers John M. Seay, Ellis Woodward, Sahffi Lynne and Ray Jozwiak as they bring you even closer to their talent and music.

John Seay, to be specific . . .
John M. Seay writes and performs songs that make people think, laugh, cry, smile and remember. Based in Baltimore, he has a well-earned reputation as a songwriter's songwriter, and delivers funny, insightful, user-friendly songs with wry, understated heartfeltitude. Or words to that effect. Ideas . . .

. . . are plenty . . .

. . . That is ideas for songs/compositions/pieces of music . . .

. . . but these days I feel as though I cannot find/make enough time to properly develop them. The reasons are many, varied and boring.  But they do say we MAKE time for those things for which we really want to make time. . .

. . . This idea has been floating around my consciousness for a few months now and continues to evolve although it may finally be taking some form now . . .

(of course titles, like the ideas themselves, continue to evolve also_

None . . .

. . . whatsoever . . .

The title of my latest release 'No Frills' exemplifies the 'gonzo' piano approach that I took over a decade ago in performing original songs instrumentally (although many do have lyrics also) on acoustic piano (my weapon of choice) without accompaniment, digital or sample additives, studio embellishment (with the possible exception of  some eq, reverb and the like) etc. And with this, my tenth offering, have adopted my evolving penchant for very little narrative or visual accoutrements to possibly an even greater degree.  Needless to say, I am quite pleased with the results. I continue my spiritual and technical evolution to much personal satisfaction. . . I hope to yours as well.

Songs . . .

(from the desk of Rod Deacey)
". . . This Monday, we are delighted to welcome back an inspired performer described by Larry Groce of NPR’s Mountain Stage as “West Virginia’s premier songwriter.” The inimitable TODD BURGE can write and sing you a witty ditty about ANYTHING, and frequently does write about anything, or at least those things that no-one else would think to sing about. Todd’s buddy, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter TIM O’BRIEN says. “… he’s invented his own art form… his songs just keep getting better and better…” As if his stellar songwriting isn’t enough, he also plays a mean guitar, and his vocal gymnastics will blow you away! I think you can tell I like this guy – and you will, too! Come and experience West Virginia’s finest!

Monday’s Piano Prelude will be played for us by another musician from across the river, classical organist JIM MOON, who takes a break from his band, MOON MUSIC, to bring us some Scott Joplin ragtime tunes, sprinkled with classic Dylan, James Taylor and more! We are not sure if Christian will be taking care of our food and drinks or whether it will be surprise substitute Kat, back to help us again!

Three-song cameos will be supplied by award-winning songwriter ANNETTE WASILIK and another of our regular piano meisters, ROCKIN’ RAY JOZWIAK! Ray will also help me out later in the show, playing his best Americana piano… After the feature, poet JOHN HOLLY will read a couple of his poems, I’ll sing a couple of songs and read a poem, and TOMY WRIGHT (with us this week – Yea!) will close the evening…"

Songs . . .

. . . for the old and the new . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne-
poem by Robert Burns)

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,

and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
On old long syne.

CHORUS:
On old long syne my Jo,
On old long syne,
That thou canst never once reflect,
On old long syne.

Raising Children . . .

. . . is like writing songs. Well, it is kinda'. . .

Before you really have anything, you have some pretty good ideas about what you want in the end. So you get started and before you know it, you're working your butt off to take care of all the developments. And before you're ever really finished with ONE, another comes along and you find you're doing the same thing all over again AND at the same time you're still working on the other one. Before you know, you find that you sincerely like them individually and they can stand alone without you (and without each other too) and you begin to exhale a sigh of relief.  But alas, you recognize something that still needs your attention and, of course, you are more than happy to devote additional effort because you know that if you give all you've got, that (those) song(s) will provide pure musical to many and all kinds of others all by themselves for a long, long time.  It's a rewarding endeavor that brings endless joy and gratification.  But, and although some people make it look easy while others only do it half-assed, it is hard work.
