More . . .

. . . drama . . .
Caught in the the crosshairs
Of my poison-dart, marauding rifle
But then what can a body do?
‘You’re not the man you used to be’
You say with certain relish
But then again you’re here with me
And though you surely cannot hide
You’ll try to run for certain
And I will follow where you go
As we perpetuate the dance
We’ve done through all the ages
Ours is much more than just a show

Bought my ticket
Took time off for
The drama of life
Front row orchestra
Tux, tails just for
The drama of life

Some choose their circumstances
With a dearth of careful thinking
Some can’t make any choice at all
But all the options must be weighed
Outcomes evaluated
And for some flavor add some salt

Take an intermission
Look at what you’re missing

It’s not a natural
Or a simple kind of undertaking
Half-heartedness won’t make it so
To rise above self-serving vanities
Makes all the difference
Sometimes that’s all you need to know

Brewer's . . .

(from Rod Deacy, Frederick MD musician, poet, master of ceremonies and local music promoter)
". . . This Monday, Sept 11, we are fortunate indeed! We welcome back to Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase . . . "

124 N Market St, Frederick, MD 21701
Menu: brewers-alley.com
Hours: Open today · 11:30AM–11:30PM
Phone: (301) 631-0089

". . . one of the major stars in the singer-songwriter world, VICTORIA VOX, making her annual visit, to amaze us with her terrific songs and innovative ukulele playing! The cherries on the top of a Victoria Vox show are her powerful stage presence, her fierce intelligence and impish sense of humor – always on display! Don’t miss this show!

Monday’s piano prelude will be played by exceptional blues pianist and singer-songwriter ROGUE JOHNSEN, who we are pleased to see back at Brewer’s! Christian will be taking care of food and drinks for us, as usual. Come early to get good seats; the piano prelude starts at 7:30 pm.

Three-songs cameos are from Americana songwriter and frequent audience member DOMENIC CICALA, who I ran into briefly last night catching the excellent Willie Barry Band playing on Market Street, plus ROB HINKAL, solo for a change, without his band IlyAIMY. Expect more guitar notes played by Rob in three songs than most people play all evening! Poetry will be delivered Southern-preacher-style by our own JOHN HOLLY, and by English person ROD DEACEY. The percussion section will be fully loaded this week with the irrepressible RON GOAD, TIM BRADY and TOMY WRIGHT (Woo-Hoo!), and Tomy will also do a set at the end of the evening!

Soundman and MC duties tomorrow will be undertaken as always by the hard-working TODD C. WALKER; thanks go to him for endurance and enthusiasm! His quest for perfect sound never ceases! . . ."

No Opera . . .

. . . but Great . . .

(from https://www.dustygroove.com/item/414042 review of The Pointer Sisters Live at the Opera House)
". . . No opera here – but a really unique early live show by The Pointer Sisters, one that shows the Bay Area quartet to be one of the most diverse soul acts of their generation! The double-length set features the girls singing a mix of older jazz tunes and a few newer tracks – scatting in vocalese one minute, and singing straighter soul the next – all with larger group backing from an orchestra directed by Tom Salisbury. There's a real "show" feeling to the album – as it was recorded even with the group's introduction on stage, as well as plenty of crowd response and an overall format that gets at the highly-entertaining mode of the Pointers in their early years. . ."

Meet . . .

. . . the press . . .

Well the truth is finally revealed and my hypothosis proven correct.  It's all about the show.  Hang integrity and hang journalism.  "Welcome back my friends . . . "

(from http://www.politicususa.com/2014/12/28/chuck-todd-defends-challenging-republican-lies-meet-press.html)
". . . Meet The Press host (Chuck Todd) said, “We all sit there, because we all know, the first time we bark (back at politicians and public figures who are blatantly lying on my show) is the last time that they do the show. You say something, and sometimes it is last time they will ever come on your show. There is that balance.” . . ."

Maybe Chuck Todd needs such a balance because Chuck Todd needs these people to be on  his show.  But in all honesty, do WE really need such a show?

Opening . . .

. . .the Monday Night Songwriters' Showcase this Monday evening upstairs at Brewer's Alley in Frederick MD at the embryonic grand.  Show starts at 7:30.

The featured performer this Monday (February 17) is Laura Baron. Song poet Laura is known for her powerful vocals and passionate delivery. She fills the venue with the emotion of her lyrics and the beauty of her voice. People find inspiration and a lightness of spirit in her songs of renewal, second chances and hope.

Laura performs and composes contemporary folk, blues and jazz. She often collaborates with other musicians on stage including co-writer and DC bassist Pat Quinn.

A multi-award winning singer songwriter, Laura is the recipient of three Gold Awards from the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Her most recent CD, Scenes From The Avenue features many of her award winning songs. In 2008 she won Gold in the Jazz/Blues category for her song, Kindness Don't Rest Easy, which she performed at the Smithsonian Baird Auditorium as a part of the SAW/BWI songwriters showcase.

Monday Night Songwriters' Showcase (now in its ninth year!) is held on Monday evenings upstairs at Brewer's Alley, 124 N. Market St., in beautiful downtown Frederick, MD (except all but the first Monday of Decmber). The program starts at 7:30 pm with a piano prelude, followed by three or four songwriters doing three songs each (lots of variety). The featured songwriter for the evening goes on around 9 pm for around an hour, followed by two or three more three-song performers. Somewhere in the mix we may throw in some poetry. MCs are Ron Goad, Todd C. Walker and Tomy Wright, frequently interrupted by Rod Deacey. Tips are collected for the featured performer. You are encouraged to be generous if possible. Featured songwriters are a mix of national and regional touring performers, with many award winners from all genres.

Fight. . .

. . . for your right. . .

Those Chesneyans.

When Kenny Chesney comes to town, rest assured there will be party. At Pittsburg's Heinz Field, literal boatloads of fans arrive days before the performance, tying up along the river posing a potential hazard. Meantime, on land, parking is $40 a car and police abound.   This does not deter over-the-top behavior who party long and hard for many hours before the show. Garbage and human waste abound.

The recent show in Pittsburgh was notable.  Of 50,000 fans, about 75 people were arrested and 45 required medical attention

Brewer's. . .

(
(from Rod Deacey, Frederick (MD)-area musician, songwriter, performer, impressario)
". . . At Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase this Monday, Jan 14, we are delighted to welcome back JASON MYLES GOSS, who I first met when he played for me at the late, lamented WestSide café. Since those days, Jason has been busy touring around the U.S. and recording. He moved from Massachusetts to Brooklyn, NY, about six years ago and his latest CD, his fourth, called Radio Dial, has met with critical acclaim across the country…He’s really good – come and check him out!

“This one-man-show reminded everyone packed into the small venue what live acoustic performances are all about and why the up-and-coming deserve to be heard.”
– Dissolver Magazine

We are happy that COLETTE ROHAN has changed her working hours, so she is able to come and play some piano preludes for us this year! She starts this week – come out and hear her play!  As per normal, come early to find good seats for the evening and to catch the entire prelude. You can come upstairs at 7:15 pm (maybe 5 minutes or so earlier than that if we’re ready; performers can come up when they arrive).

For three-song cameo performers this Monday, we are happy to see the return of RICARDO – THE DIVINING SAGE, plus BASSWOOD, and advertising his Feb 18 feature spot, BRETT BARRY! Brett is also helping me tweak the sound this week, so if you see him lurking behind the soundboard – that’s why! We will be also hearing from the regular crew; poet JOHN HOLLY, reciting his poems between other performers, and TODD C. WALKER, who also takes photos, helps emcee and helps run sound. TOMY WRIGHT is with us for the first time this new season, and will play some guitar and sing after the feature. . . "
