What, Me? . . .

There's been a time or two, I'll say
In the two-plus years just hence
When the news and its circumstances
Made me wonder 'where's the sense?'

Is there sense in swindling citizens
Who pursuing knowledge, sought
For a means by which the cost
Would not place them in hock

Is there sense in opening Arctic Seas
Like Beaufort or like Cook
To exploration for oil and gas
Are these civil servants or crooks?

And these are only two examples
Of senselessness and things awry
In our government and in our world
Don't worry though, just cry

False Sense . . .

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/is-trumps-doctor-okay/2018/01/17/0d887f50-fbce-11e7-ad8c-ecbb62019393_story.html?hpid=hp_no-name_opinion-card-e%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.404d0acc0244)
". . . (Bandy X. Lee, the Yale Medical School psychiatrist) said the screening test (Rear Adm. Ronny) Jackson gave Trump “gives the public a false sense of reassurance.” Indeed, Donald Trump Jr. used the results of the test in a tweet: “More #winning. 30 out of 30.” . . . She said the test, though useful for detecting Alzheimer’s and the like, indicates little about “his high functioning, his frontal-lobe functioning, that we’re questioning.” To figure out what causes the worrisome traits President Trump exhibits — disordered decision-making, an insatiable need for affirmation, little impulse control, confusion about facts, difficulty foreseeing consequences — you’d need more extensive tests, a psychological exam and an MRI. . . How . . .

. . . is it that the electoral college did NOT have the balls to stop what clearly, by the standards of anyone with common sense, should be STOPPED??!!!

(from http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Balls)
Balls
1. A man's testicles where sperm is produced.
2. Courage or bravery.
3. Manliness.
4. Something yelled to shock people.

1. He didn't have the balls to jump off a three-story platform into the water.
2. He may look sexy, but Dereck doesn't have balls.
3. The boy said to his grandmother: "Balls!" And she passed out.

Leveling . . .

Michael Bloomberg will use his personal fortune to fight, or at least counter, the efforts of the National Rifle Association. $50 million will be dedicated to his new group Everytown for Gun Safety, an umbrella for his two other gun control groups: Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

The new organization will battle the NRA on its own turf and with its very own tactics. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Actions says Women, and more particularly mothers, will be the key demographic in the outreach to curb gun violence. "Moms are afraid that our children will be taken away. In the end, that's the emotion that's going to win."

Influencing those in charge of writing gun policy though, will be the ultimate goal beginning with creating a political action committee to elect gun safety candidates to office and a 501(c)(4), an IRS classification used to raise unlimited amounts of money to influence voters. It aims to motivate a million pro-gun safety voters to go to the polls in November. The group will also submit a gun safety questionnaire to candidates and keep a score card of how elected officials vote on gun-related issues, another NRA tactic.

By matching the NRA's financial heft, Bloomberg makes the challenge to the NRA a little less daunting. The NRA has spent more than $30 million lobbying elected officials since 1998. Its efforts have been very successful in Congress over the past decade, defeating attempts to ban assault weapons and expand background checks.

Common. . .

. . . sense. . .

(Thanks to Medea Benjamin of truthout.com)
Some common sense to begin restoring America to its former position of respect and admiration:
  1. No more drone strikes.  They don't stop, but help to make terrorists.
  1. Save money and help the cause by closing the drone airbases.
  1. Free Guantanamo prisoners which have already been cleared for release. Holding them is an affront to humanity and hypocrisy with regard to our values.
  1. Apologize and compensate the families of innocent people hurt or killed by drones or other military action.
  1. Withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan.
  1. Talk. The Taliban and more rational elements of Al Qaeda have indicated they are open to negotiations. History shows a large percentage of terrorists groups have been dissolved by joining the political process.
  1. End support of dictatorships and repressive leaders. Business selling weapons might be good for US weapons makers but not for the rest of us.
  1. Support non-violent democracy movements. Chaos and instability only help terrorists.
  1. Stop disregarding international law and national sovereignty in killing terrorism suspects.
  1. Use foreign aid to support education, healthcare and elimination of poverty.

Reasonable. . .

A reasonable, thinking man. I may not prefer he be my president, but I would have him represent me in the Senate . . . if I could convince him to talk sense to ALL the others.

Sen. John McCain, has joined President Obama's call to review "Stand Your Ground" laws in the aftermath of the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin shooting. McCain also believes his home state, which has such a law on the books, should also consider it.

Meantime, other extreme-rightists continue to stand THEIR ground, like
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas who criticized Obama for his comments.  McCain, logically asserted that it is time to try to come together in light of several weeks of what is really exacerbating relations between elements of our society? McCain says he favors discussion rather than condemnation.

Person?. . .

(from www.MoveToAmend.org)
When it comes to constitutions, the application of law, and common sense, the Supreme Court of the United States could learn a thing or two from President Judge Debbie O’Dell-Seneca of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania.

O’Dell-Seneca overruled a previous decision that sealed a settlement between a Mount Pleasant Township family and large energy corporations, which caused the family harm because of fracking on an adjacent property to their own. The Observer-Reporter and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette pressed the suit, which ultimately decided the public’s right to be informed outstripped the corporation’s right to privacy.

In fact, O’Dell-Seneca went much further than that. The judge asserted corporations have no constitutional rights:

“...the constitution vests in business entities no special rights that the laws of this Commonwealth cannot extinguish. In sum, [corporations] cannot assert [constitutional privacy] protections because they are not mentioned in its text.”

“...it is axiomatic that corporations, companies, and partnerships have no ‘spiritual nature,’ ‘feelings,’ ‘intellect,’ ‘beliefs,’ ‘thoughts,’ ‘emotions,’ or ‘sensations,’ because they do not exist in the manner that humankind exists… They cannot be ‘let alone’ by government, because businesses are but grapes, ripe upon the vine of the law, that the people of this Commonwealth raise, tend, and prune at their pleasure and need.”

Despite the mainstream media’s blackout on any reporting that calls into question corporate personhood, this recent decision is an important victory for our movement.

CELDF (Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund) Executive Director Thomas Linzey writes:  “The ruling represents the first crack in the judicial armor that has been so meticulously welded together by major corporations. And it affirms what many communities already know -- that change only occurs when people begin to openly question and challenge legal doctrines that have been treated as sacred by most lawyers and judges.”

Laws follow culture and the legal system adjusts as society's views shift. This case illustrates that we are collectively beginning to change hearts and minds about the appropriate role of the corporation in society, even amongst those who are entrenched in the current system.

Lesson. . .

 . . . learned
When I was a kid, I had great respect for my elders.  I also had great respect for my contemporaries simply because that's what I was taught to do.  In fact, I may possibly have accorded more respect to many (old and young) than was actually necessary.  Not that I should have treated them badly.  It's just that I held some in much higher esteem than was warranted.

The older I got the more perspective I gained about sense, non-sense, bluster, honesty, empathy and integrity. I was, most certainly and understandably youth generally is, naive.  But I was also idealistic. I thought that a person could be taken at his word, and in that, I was wrong.  At least in some cases.

This lesson was driven home for me soon after college.  I had a temporary position at a local television station which I had hoped would become permanent.  My 'boss' in this position was one of the nicest, most honest, empathetic, sympathetic and virtuous individuals that I had (and have) ever met.  I believed that this is what a boss should be.  I also believed that this is what other bosses would be.  When the position failed to become permanent and I sought employment in another field, I quickly learned that my boss at the TV stations was a rare find, indeed.
