Silencing . . .

(from It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis)
". . . ". . . everything that is worthwhile in the world has been accomplished by the free, inquiring, critical spirit, and that the preservation of this spirit is more important than any social system whatsoever. But the men of ritual and the men of barbarism are capable of shutting up the men of science and of silencing them forever.". . . "

To Creed . . .

. . . or not to creed . . .

Yes, he's a fuckhead but, we're splitting hairs on the creed thing. I wouldn't have read it either. But let's get after him about the THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER!! DECENCY, EMPATHY, COMPASSION, PRINCIPLES!!! [Science, reading, education, facts. . . the creed is really not what we need from our president right now] Let us be careful not to bark up the wrong tree!

Knowledge . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/bill-gates-says-trump-asked-difference-between-hiv-hpv-n875286)
". . . (Bill) Gates . . .  described two meetings in Trump Tower in which he urged the president to become a leader in science and innovation, perhaps by accelerating progress toward an HIV vaccine.
. . . he asked me if vaccines weren't a bad thing because he was considering a commission to look into ill-effects of vaccines,” Gates said. “And somebody, Robert Kennedy Jr., was advising him that vaccines were causing bad things and I said, ‘No, that is a dead end, that would be a bad thing, do not do that.". . . There were laughs and groans from the audience after Gates added: “Both times he wanted to know the difference between HIV and HPV and so I was able to explain that those are things that are rarely confused with each other.”. . . Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection — affecting 79 million Americans, most in their late teens and early 20s —and can cause health problems including cancers. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) weakens the immune system destroying important cells that fight disease and infection and can lead to AIDS. There are vaccines for HPV but no known cure for HIV. . ."

Compelling . . .

. . . science (without tin foil) . . .

(from https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/)
Sea level rise
Global sea level rose about 8 inches in the last century. The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century

Global temperature rise
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with 16 of the 17 warmest years on record occurring since 2001. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months. 6

Warming oceans
The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969

Shrinking ice sheets
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometers (36 to 60 cubic miles) of ice per year between 2002 and 2006, while Antarctica lost about 152 cubic kilometers (36 cubic miles) of ice between 2002 and 2005.

Declining Arctic sea ice
Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades.8
Image: Visualization of the 2012 Arctic sea ice minimum, the lowest on record

Glacial retreat
Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.

Extreme events
Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world; including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa. The number of record high temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events.10

Ocean acidification
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent. This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year.

Decreased snow cover
Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier

More Facts . . .

. . . to IGNORE . . .

(from http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-paris-agreement-science-research-wrong-misunderstood-latest-a7768296.html)
". . . Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) officials have said US President Donald Trump badly misunderstood their research when he cited it to justify withdrawing the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. . . "Even if the Paris Agreement were implemented in full, with total compliance from all nations, it is estimated it would only produce a two-tenths of one degree Celsius reduction in global temperature by the year 2100 . . . Tiny, tiny amount." . . . The Cambridge, Massaschusetts-based research university published a study in April 2016 titled "How much of a difference will the Paris Agreement make?" showing that if countries abided by their pledges in the deal, global warming would slow by between 0.6 degree and 1.1 degrees Celsius by 2100. . . "If we don't do anything, we might shoot over 5 degrees or more and that would be catastrophic," said John Reilly, the co-director of the program, adding that MIT's scientists had had no contact with the White House and were not offered a chance to explain their work. . ."

(from http://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-kerry-trump-decision-abdication-of-responsibility/)
He (John Kerry, former Secretary of State) accused Mr. Trump of "unilaterally walking backwards from science and backwards from leadership on behalf of polluters and fringe ideologues," and said it "may be the most self-defeating action in American history."

Bears . . .

. . . repeating. . .
.

(from NBCNews.com) ". . . The following are Dr. Kent Brantly's prepared remarks given at a news conference at Emory University Hospital in August 2014, provided by his charity Samaritan's Purse:

"Today is a miraculous day. I am thrilled to be alive, to be well and to be reunited with my family. . . We moved to Liberia because God called us to serve the people of Liberia. . . As I lay in my bed in Liberia for the following nine days, getting sicker and weaker each day, I prayed that God would help me to be faithful even in my illness, and I prayed that in my life or in my death, He would be glorified. . . I have learned since, that there were thousands, maybe even millions of people around the world praying for me throughout that week, and even still today. . . what I can tell you is that I serve a faithful God who answers prayers. . . God saved my life — a direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. . . with the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. . . Please do not stop praying for the people of Liberia and West Africa. . . I am forever thankful to God for sparing my life . . . "

Guess the Doc never thought science, nature, germs and choices had ANYTHING to do with it, or why for that matter, his God chose him over the many Liberian folks who, presumably without the thousands of 'prayers' HE received, did happen to die.

Priestly . . .

(from Treatise on the Gods by H.L. Mencken)
". . . the first priest probably found it much harder to support such pretentions than it is today, for the science of theology was still in its infancy.  One can easily imagine rivals essaying to talk him down, and even laughing at him. Was the tribe as a whose with him or against him? The chances are that it was more or less divided, for in the domain of religion the human mind is naturally somewhat flighty, and what one man believes another is sure to doubt. If the first priest was prudent, as he probably was, he soon grasped the fact that his monopoly could not last, and sought to save what he could of it by compromise.  That is to say, he sought to dispose of his most formidable rival by admitting him as an apprentice and so gaining his help. The two priests bloomed where only one had bloomed before, and presently there was a whole guild of them, and they began to act in cooperation, pooling their professional secrets and equipment, accumulating a tradition and acquiring a definite place in society. . ."

Firmly . . .

Rep. Lamar Smith , R-Texas has used his power of congressional subpoena to coerce the head of NOAA, Kathryn Sullivan, to hand over all data and emails from scientists on their use of global satellite data. Smith is chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. In a very harshly worded letter, his co-committee member Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, accuses him of overreaching and abusing his power, noting (correctly) that neither he nor his staff is qualified to examine the data.

Accept . . .

The Vatican is finally admitting that a group they formerly chose to strongly repress now has "gifts and qualities to offer". A newly released document asked if Catholicism could accept gays and recognize positive aspects of same-sex couples. Church conservatives called it a betrayal of traditional family values, you know, those VALUES that require repression of SOME group of individuals that they barely know and absolutely do NOT understand.

John Smeaton, co-founder of the conservative group Voice of the Family, said: "Those who are controlling the synod have betrayed Catholic parents worldwide." He failed to explain precisely how they accomplished that or how any of this relates to parents or children. He called it "one of the worst official documents drafted in Church history".

He conveniently forgot about the documents that denounced contraceptives, premarital sex, masturbation, abortion, artificial insemination, voluntary sterilization, lifelong celibacy for priests, nuns, and monks – and all others who never marry. Occasionally, the Church even shows signs of its old opposition to “bad thoughts” about sex (i.e., thoughts associating sex with pleasure), and to marital acts of sexual intercourse engaged in for pleasure rather than procreation. As recently as Pope John Paul II, husbands were urged “not to commit adultery with their wives by desiring sex for its mere pleasure and the satisfaction of instinct”

Hopefully the Catholic church will continue this evolution toward the proper direction and stop marginalizing those who are DIFFERENT from them, or formerly marginalized in an age of ignorance or pre-scientific knowledge.

Fairytales . . .

After (ABC reporter Jonathan) Karl asked Marco Rubio a pretty straightforward question about climate– "Do you agree with science on this?"

He responded with, ". . . what they have chosen to do is take a handful of decades of research and say that this is now evidence of a longer-term trend that's directly and almost solely attributable to man-made activity. I do not agree with that. . ."

He added that "natural disasters have always existed" and that he doesn't "believe that human activity is causing these dramatic changes to our climate the way these scientists are portraying it." And besides, their solutions will only serve to "destroy our economy."

How would a responsible journalist, committed to objectivity and truth conclude an interview that included such statements?  Might he mention that Rubio's take on the issue is dramatically at odds with science?

Hopefully.  But Karl decided instead to summarize with- "It's talk like that that Rubio hopes will appeal to the conservatives he would need to win the Republican nomination."

Truth?  Objectivity?  Not here. . .
(Thanks to Peter Hart at http://www.fair.org/blog/2014/05/12/the-wrong-response-to-rubios-climate-nonsense/)

Insurgent outlier . . .

. . . sticks and stones? . . .  don't think so . . .

Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein, two D.C. journalists for more than 40 years known for their carefully nonpartisan positions are saying that Congress is more dysfunctional than it has been since the Civil War.  They also name drop saying ". . . the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier — ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition," they write in their new book, It's Even Worse Than It Looks. . . "

They also say, ". . . the media and elsewhere sometimes do a disservice to the reality. . . It disarms the electorate in a democracy when you really need an ideological outlier to be reined in by an active, informed public. . . "

This one'll be a must-read for me.
