No Matter . . .

. . . where they originate
Or their length or their size
Or their breadth
No matter the gravity
Of a thought they convey
Or if there's a lack of such depth

All's fair in this game
(or this passion; this craft)
Any scrap, bit or morsel is good
As in automobiles
Homosapiens too
Reserve judgement
Til you're under the hood

Have a bite of this now
Just in passing; a taste
You may find that it's droll; or enhancing
Nothing serious now
It's not science or skill
At this time, it's a season for dancing

Passion . . .

'Flames of Passion' by Mark Henson

Working at the thing you love
Brings peace and satisfaction
That is difficult to describe
To those who have never experienced it

Working at a thing that provides
Economic security (or pays the bills)
But is not an activity about which
You feel no passion or little affinity
Is another thing altogether
Yet familiar to many to experience it everyday

Mysterious? . . .

. . . ordinary. . .

On very special occasions
When celebrating felt right
This place we'd go
With ambience and wine
On a Saturday night
Caricatures hung on the walls
Eavesdropping on our most intimate moments
"I love you"

It was essential to go there
To mark the passage of time
Between the dates
We used to signify
The bond we shared and to dine
Always served Angus A-one prime
To patrons of each and every persuasion
"I loved you"

But now that place is all gone
Where did our love go
Where is the ambience and
McCafferty's piano

While you eat
You're serenaded
By some local musician
Playing bad renditions of the popular songs
You sing along

And so it ended
Our passion
Somehow just faded away
And likewise too
That place we held divine
Became a dance club today
The memories come charging in
Sweet dreams and all the romancing related
It's gone now

But now that place is all gone
Where did our love go
Where is the ambience and
McCafferty's piano

Dedication . . .

. . . or passion?

(inspired by http://www.dailyom.com/cgi-bin/display/printerfriendly.cgi?articleid=50695)
Dedication is essential to get things done. What compels such commitment?  It may be validation from others who appreciate the amount of work involved. It could be an increased heart rate or an internal warmth extending from head to toe. Working without passion though, makes one feel empty if that hard work is unappreciated by others. The difference between 'work' and 'passion' is that the former is undertaken for 'others', even though we accept recompense for our effort. The latter is undertaken only for pure self-gratification. Passion fuels our desires and interests and gives everything else we do greater value as a result. Identify your passion today, your dedication to all other things will have deeper significance for you.

Passion . . .

Social media, email and the Internet have not only brought about the quick and convincing scare syndrome and the quick-spread falsehood but it has also brought about the passionate reactionary.  Witness Hans Groiner.  No, he's not a passionate reactionary.  He is however, a very clever entertainment presentation from the clever and talented Larry Goldings, who is not may I mention, a comic by trade.

The passion, both rational and not, enters the picture when you read the commentaries of the YouTube offerings of Hans Groiner.  In short, the fictional Mr. Groiner is a musician who, although he does not like jazz, has undertaken the project of 'correcting' the music of Thelonious Monk. The result is a new-age-y, benign, vaguely familiar tune chock-full of major chords and 'straight' rhythms.  But Larry's shtick is very SNL-ish or Christopher Guest/Rob Reiner parody-like and every bit as witty.

Perception . . .

As I approach the finale of the old television series Frasier on Netflicks (which it seems I've been watching sporadically for at least two years and running), the actress Laura Linney is now a major character (Frasier's new love interest). Laura Linney has always reminded me of my tenth-grade biology teacher in high school.  That, of course, got my mind pondering my youth (adolescence to be precise) and the whereabouts of some of the friends and acquaintances from those days which led to thinking about perception, life, philosophy and much more.

One of my more cogent observations from this, my mature vantage point, is that when I was in high school there was very little boredom during my daytime, committed, serious hours (those spent at school). Conversely, now that I am older and know very well the nature of my true passion(s), my daytime, committed, serious hours (those spent at my economic livelihood) can frequently become boring.  The one constant however is, I do (and have for a long, long time) fully, constructively and joyfully occupy those hours that are my own. And the one pastime with which I fill this time is the truest and most wonderful passion one can imagine . . . making music!

Cultivate . . .

(from http://www.theminimalists.com/cal/ - an interview with Cal Newport, Ph.D. an assistant professor of computer science at Georgetown University,)
". . . Steve Jobs, in his famous Stanford Commencement address, told the students (paraphrasing here): You’ve got to find what you love, don’t settle.

If you read the press and social media that surrounded the event, it’s clear that many people interpreted this as him saying, “follow your passion.” If you go back into the details of his biography, however you discover this is not what he did. He stumbled into Apple computer (it was a scheme to make a quick $1,000) at a time when he was “passionate” mainly about eastern mysticism.

But Jobs was open to opportunity. When he sensed that his scheme was bigger than he imagined, he pivoted and poured a lot of energy into building a company around selling computers. He cultivated passion. He didn’t follow it. . ."

Fat-ig-yew. . .

. . . hey man!! . . . it happens!!!

It's not that I feel inadequate or sub-par for getting tired.  There are only twenty-four hours in a day you know.  So you sleep for five or six hours, you get up good and early for the upcoming adventure of a day, you put in a solid  seven-to-eight hours at the office, you commute, you prepare (or assist in preparing) a reasonably exciting and delectable evening meal with a little family time, you consume the aforesaid exciting and delectable (blah, blah, blah) thing in a relatively relaxed manner because, as you may well know, the speedy consumption of your food does not aid digestion, weight management or your general health, then you may have thirty to ninety (depending upon the complexity of the preparation of the exciting and [blah, blah, blah, blah- YOU KNOW!] ) for a favorite hobby, pass-time, television show - OR YOUR PASSION!!!,  and then it's time for the sleep-time ablutions and ceremony before you can finally jump into bed for another restful five to six . . . and then . . .

DO IT AGAIN!!!

Working . . .

. . . at our passion. . .
. . . MUSIC!!. . .

The Ditty is progressing nicely, thank you.  And working with the fine gentlemen of OHO continues to be technically, creatively and personally enriching for me.  Jay, David (and Bill of The Bratt Studio) possess the focus of a mother eagle on its prey and exhibited rare and precious mettle in the task at hand . . . nurturing The Ocean City Ditty (by Jay Graboski) to a snappy and rocking maturity.
Coming along well, don't you think? . . .

O - C - E - A - N   C - I - T-Y
O - C - E - A - N   C - I - T-Y
On your mark get set
Disconnect that internet
Every girl and boy
Breathing in the joy
Not a care at last
Sit outside and bask
In rays of summer's bliss

Crabs and fish and shells
Feel your tension spell
Fries and pizza pie
Smiles won't be denied
Everything is cool
in 2 1 8 4 2
Feel the sparkle in your eyes

Catch a wave and ride
Cars and motorbikes
Bikini babes in the sand
Vibin' to rockin' bands
Ocean City

From Memorial to Labor Day
We beckon you to play
To a boardwalk beat
Miles and miles of beach
Your memories to take
Currents dance and sway
leave your footprints in the sand

Fireworks at night
Give your love a kiss
Sail and fish the sea
Here life is a beach
in Ocean City

Now is the time that's right
For you only live once
Time does drag when it's all work and no fun
The ocean gateway calls you
Sport your shorts and shades
It's so divine to dine at life's buffet
It's almost heaven and
There's so much more we can say

Catch a wave and ride
Cool cars and motorbikes
Bikinis on the sand
Dance to rockin' bands
Ocean City
