Fakes . . .

. . . and facts . . .

(from One Nation After Trump by E.J. Dionne, Jr., Norman J. Ornstein & Thomas E. Mann)
". . . The road to "fake news" was paved by the disdain in a large part of the conservative movement for real news. The trail to "alternative facts" was blazed by a mistrust of those whose jobs and professional ethics required them to report and rely on real facts. . .  the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan's coinage: "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts". . . "

Action . . .

(from https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/05/opinion/sunday/trump-impeachment.html)
". . . Consider the following descriptions of Trump: “terribly unfit;” “erratic;” “reckless;” “impetuous;” “unstable;” “a pathological liar;” “dangerous to a democracy;” a concern to “anyone who cares about our nation.” Every one of these descriptions comes from a Republican member of Congress or of Trump’s own administration. . . They know. They know he is unfit for office. They do not need to be persuaded of the truth. They need to be persuaded to act on it. . ."

Support . . .

Dear Mr. Jozwiak,

. . . in the face of the President Trump’s incredibly disconcerting behavior, we must fight for our values as a nation. I have long believed that good leaders are humble, not haughty. Good leaders have the courage to stay out of step when everyone else is marching to the wrong tune. Good leaders don’t divide people, they unite them. They don’t build walls, they build history. Moreover, good leaders remember the Golden Rule: to treat others as they would wish to be treated. If President Trump wants to be a president for all Americans—as he promised on election night—he would do well to adhere to this. But whether he does so or not, we must do everything we can to ensure that all Americans receive equal protection under the law. Moving forward, I will continue to work to hold both the President and his Administration accountable for something the American people expect and deserve: a federal government run with transparency and integrity. . .

With best personal regards, I am,

Sincerely,

Tom Carper
United States Senator

You Ask . . .

. . .  how does an atheist pray? . . .

(from http://theothercloset-atheism.blogspot.com/2009/12/19-atheists-christmas-prayer.html)
This Christmas, I pray that the struggle over the “true meaning” of the holiday is wiped away, replaced by the desire to honor what Christmas means to you and not to your neighbors.
I pray that we as a nation can learn to put aside the party lines and shields of segregation to leave the world better than we found it.
I pray that we as a race can learn to prosper without greed, without indifference.
I pray that the good times outweigh the bad, and that we enter the lives of those we are lucky enough to encounter with the grace and respect that everyone deserves, regardless of their status, regardless of our creed.
I pray we wake up one day with the recognition that – black or white, rich or poor, religious or not – we all want the same things, even if we disagree on how best to achieve them.
I pray that those who need shelter will find it.
I pray that those in pain will find an end to suffering.
I pray for peace.
I pray for hope.
Most of all, I pray that tomorrow will be better than it was today.
For all of us.

Moore . . .

. . . or less?

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/roy-moore-lost-his-election-alabama-gop-losing-it-s-ncna829316)
". . . The GOP, and the nation, narrowly dodged a bullet l. . . after accused pedophile Roy Moore lost to senator-elect Doug Jones in Alabama. Thankfully, Moore will not have a national platform from which to heave his unconstitutional, bigoted refuse. . . But a Republican loss in Alabama, of all places, following the party’s miserable performance in Virginia last month, should send a clear warning to party leadership: continue to appease President Donald Trump’s populist, nationalist movement at your peril. . . Moore’s candidacy. . . and loss say much about the state of the party. . .
Moore was defeated by “a coalition of the decent,” . . . comprised of principled Republicans, independents and Democrats; with two significant wins under the coalition's belt already, GOP leaders should understand that an urgent course correction is needed. . . "

Change . . .

(from John Adams, by David McCullough)
". . . All that part of Creation that lies within our observation is liable to change. . . Even mighty states and kingdoms are not exempted. If we look into history, we shall find some nations rising from contemptible beginnings and spreading their influence, until the whole globe is subjected to their ways. When they have reached the summit of grandeur, some minute and unsuspected cause commonly affects their ruin, and the empire of the world is transferred to some other place. Immortal Rome was at first but an insignificant village, inhabited only by a few abandoned ruffians, but by degrees it rose to a stupendous height, and excelled in arts and arms all the nations that preceded it. But the demolition of Carthage (what one should think should have established it in supreme dominion) by removing all danger, suffered it to sink into debauchery, and made it at length an easy prey to Barbarians. . . England immediately upon this began to increase (the particular and minute cause of which I am not historian enough to trace) in power and magnificence, and is now the greatest nation upon the globe. . ."

Similar . . .

?????

(from James Madison; A Biography by Ralph Ketchum)
". . . Madison then discussed even more explicitly the "party issues" before the nation. Aiming directly at Hamiltonian arguments that the government ought to favor the wealthy to consolidate the Union, he asserted that a republican government should insure political equality, encourage an equitable distribution of property, abstain from granting special privileges, and thereby diminish the unnecessary party strife caused by partisan measures. A balance of parties based on natural and inevitable differences would then serve the cause of freedom. Madison next asserted that the British government, far from being a good example of a balance of "king, lords, and commons," in fact was virtuous only insofar as public admirers of Britain, Madison meant his readers to think. The true model for a balance of powers that would prevent abuses was the American system, with its separation of the departments in the federal government and the division of powers between it and the states.  Madison counseled that "those who love their country, its repose, and its republicanism, will study to avoid the alternative" of disunion or tyranny by observing scrupulously the prescribed limits, and particularly by desisting from acts that would heighten jealousies and animosities. So much for Hamilton's programs to favor the commercial classes and to consolidate power in the federal government. . ."

All ? . . .

. . . or just the ones YOU know?

It always amazes me when someone uses the word "all" in reference to a group of people, such as gender, religious, professional, age, race, national origin or anything else. The reason this began to trouble me many years ago was a conversation, of which I was a party, where someone made reference to men, a group to which I belong, and "how they are."  In fact, the attribute, characteristic, nature or other aspect of men to which this person referred was clearly not one that I shared and I was, quite honestly, anxious to inform the person of this. All of which, after some additional consideration, led me to the realization that although it comes quickly and frequently to the mind (and to the lips), the word "ALL" should be employed only with the utmost discretion, unless of course you are referring to a smaller, more manageable group than 'men', such as 'the three stooges', 'two of my friends' or maybe even 'a dozen eggs.'  Another recent conversation involved me where another man was considering that portion of the population to which I will refer to here as women, in a somewhat dismissive and disparaging way. More specifically, and also unfortunately, he cited as his evidence female members of his own immediate family. My efforts to diplomatically bring to his attention that female members of my family were in fact not so easily categorized, a fact that in utilizing logic, negated his entire premise. At this point, it appeared that he had finally gotten my proverbial 'drift.'  But then before parting he smirked and said, 'But you know they're ALL cut from the same cloth.'

Listen . . .

. . . to one of your own . . .

(by Ronald Reagan, 1980 at http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=85199)
". . . The election will be over soon, autumn will become winter, this year will fade into next . . . and yet, the decisions we make tomorrow will determine our country's course through what promises to be one of the most perilous decades in our history. . . What kind of country, what kind of legacy will we leave to . . . young men and women who will live out America's third century as a nation? . . . In thinking about these questions, many Americans seem to be wondering, searching. . . feeling frustrated and perhaps even a little afraid. . . Many of us are unhappy about our worsening economic problems, about the constant crisis atmosphere in our foreign policy, about our diminishing prestige around the globe, about the weakness in our economy and national security that jeopardizes world peace, about our lack of strong, straight-forward leadership. . . Americans . . . seek a vision of a better America, a vision of society that frees the energies and ingenuity of our people while it extends compassion to the lonely, the desperate, and the forgotten. . . No person who understands the American presidency can possibly hope to make every decision or tend to every detail in the national government. But he can promise to bring to government the best leaders in this nation and put them to work for the American people. . ."

Un- be - f&%k - ing - lievable. . .

'Fred Phelps (I hesitate to call him 'reverend' as I don't know what kind of church he would be 'reverend" to") and other family members who make up most of the Westboro Baptist Church (oh, THAT one!) have picketed many military funerals in their quest to draw attention to their view that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.'

Now let's slow down this tape and ask about "GOD?" WHAT is THAT! 'GOD's punishment for the nation's tolerance of other human beings who are not like FRED and his GROUP!!!!' Am I following this or not???

They showed up with their usual signs, including "Thank God for dead soldiers," "You're Going to Hell," "God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11," Let me just insert here, Fred, if that is your GOD, please keep him on YOUR SIDE of the fence, in YOUR YARD. I don't even want your GOD near the dog!!!

Phelps told msnbc.com in an interview in 2006 . “That’s what we’re preaching and the forum of choice to deliver such a message, obviously, is the funeral of the kid that’s been blown to smithereens." (Sorry Fred, logic appears to be ABSENT!!)

"Albert Snyder was surfing the Internet for tributes to his son from other soldiers and strangers when he came upon a poem on the church's website that attacked Matthew's parents for the way they brought up their son. Soon after, Snyder filed a lawsuit accusing the Phelpses of intentionally inflicting emotional distress. He won $11 million at trial, later reduced by a judge to $5 million. The federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., threw out the verdict and said the Constitution shielded the church members from liability."

The label "psychological terrorism" has been applied to Pheps' actions. I agree. While distancing themselves from the church's message, media organizations, including The Associated Press, urged the court to side with the Phelps family because of concerns that a victory for Snyder could erode speech rights.

In spite of my belief in justice and values, I do agree that free speech must be preserved. The circumstances of this situation are unfortunate, to say the least.

In my view, this GOD of Phelps' must be dead though. Because if his GOD is all good, all wise, and all-knowing, he would have knocked the breath out of Phelps and his crew A LONG, LONG TIME AGO.

Walk Like an Egyptian. . .

This was going to be my next post, although I knew that something could happen at any moment. . . and IT DID!!!!

"Shouldn't the citizens of a nation have a say in their government? Have we not evolved enough to appreciate
the simple truth in such a prospect?

What part of this does Mubarak (and his cronies, and the 'analysts', and other Arab leaders) not understand?
Does the Egyptian population have to paint him a picture?

Michael Scheuer (author and former CIA employee) says we (the U.S.) have intervened in the Middle East over the past 50 years consistently to support tyranny because it supported our interest. Supported tyranny and fascism. The best thing we can do is 'keep our mouth shut.'

Need I say more?"

Well, so much for being timely.

(hear my music at http://www.rayjozwiak.com/)
