The Year . . .

. . . of living sloppily . . .
. . . A weekend here, a weekend there, and pretty soon you're talking about months. Trips on alternating weekends to la casa en la playa result in perpetual packing.  At least packing something. A duly designated corner serves the purpose of a staging area for things like a drill; an occasional crockpot and/or panini maker; a bottle (or two or three) of wine; coats, jackets, hats or shoes that make be appropriate for the current forecast and maybe small furniture items, a lamp or a storage box. It may make the local residence a bit more unkempt than previously, but it sure is fun.

Entertainer . . .

"You certainly can't make a living at THAT?!" . . . or words to that effect were spoken, not unkindly-just instructively, by my Mother sometime during my mid-teens when the possibility of my undertaking musical performance as a full-time career was being considered. . . And I knew (thought?) she was correct. Hindsight being twenty-twenty, maybe that's what I should have done. Hard work, no doubt. Lucrative, NO! Fulfilling, well. . . what do you think?  Believe me, I have absolutely no regrets.  It's just a day-dreamy premise that crosses my mind occasionally when I think too much.  I must say in hindsight, that at the time, I had nowhere near the confidence required to undertake such an endeavor.

Richer . . .

from The Noonday Demon;  An Atlas of Depression by Andrew Solomon)  [James Ballenger said,]
". . . "We're eight inches taller than we were before the Second World War and much healthier, and we're living longer. No one complains about the change.  When you remove a disability, people go out in life and find more, both good and bad.". . .

. . . And that, I think, is really the responses to the question that I was asked by almost everyone to whom I mentioned this book.  "Don't these drugs blank out your life?"  No. What they do is to allow you to have your pain in more important places, in better places, for richer reasons. . ."

Obsolescence . . .

Living political constitutions must be Darwinian in structure and in practice. Society is a living organism and must obey the laws of life, not of mechanics; it must develop. All the progressives ask or desire is permission—in an era when “development,” “evolution,” is the scientific word—to interpret the Constitution according to the Darwinian principle. . . (Woodrow Wilson)

“Anything you cannot relinquish when it has outlived its usefulness possesses you, and in this materialistic age a great many of us are possessed by our possessions.”  (Peace Pilgrim [Mildred Lisette Norman])

“Most of our assumptions have outlived their uselessness.” (Marshall McLuhan)

“The search for static security - in the law and elsewhere - is misguided. The fact is security can only be achieved through constant change, adapting old ideas that have outlived their usefulness to current facts.”  (William Osler)

To have the National Rifle Association rule the United States is pathetic. . . (Harvey Weinstein)

Dot On Your Door . . .

You’re living your ninth life time is running out
The blood of the lamb has dried and lost its clout
If you show no mercy, no mercy will be your
You’re dated and done for the dot’s on your door

On day one they marked you, put you on the list
Embroidered a burning red letter on your bib
You move with caution, the trap’s laced with lure
You’re dated and done, there’s a dot on your door

Cowards die a thousand times, the brave die only once
If ignorance is bliss, may your joy be out to lunch
If you were meant to hang in life then you will never drown
Dodging the left, the right one brings you to the ground

You’re using the right words, getting the response
Newton was right, you’re life’s a renaissance
Your impedimenta pile up on the floor
You’re locked in this room, There’s a dot on your door

Kissing your mother, digging in the dirt
Hoping something of your life will take root and give birth
The vine seeks the light, branches reaching through the clouds
Where love will prune and crown you, relieve you of your shroud

In Between. . .

Sometimes (especially at my age) life seems like a series of coping with bad things.  These things involve either a physical (although sometimes psychological) issue of my own or of others close to me, or sometimes death itself.  Not trying to be Debbie-Downer or anything here.  It's just how I feel sometimes.

But in the meantime, I have to live my life to the fullest in between those times.  I must take advantage of all the good things and people in my life.  Living this way should and will strengthen me to cope better when the bad things do roll around.

And I really don't want to be a pessimist because, as a good friend of mine often says, the glass is half empty AND half full at the same time.
