Low Lights . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_improvisation)
". . . is the spontaneous invention of melodic solo lines or accompaniment parts. . . composing on the spot. . . since the release of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, jazz improvisation has come to include modal harmony and improvisation over static key centers, while the emergence of free jazz has led to a variety of types of improvisation, such as "free blowing", in which soloists improvise freely and ignore the chord changes. . ."

Mix . . .

. . . number one . . .

Number one (of two) mixes of instrumental improvisations on the chord changes to "Superman", a recently completed composition of mine.  Two separate solos, one on electric piano/one using a guitar patch, edited into a call-and-response track.  Number two to follow shortly.

Where . . .

. . . is the cheer?. . .
. . . was a second, and more serious attempt at a Christmas song after a lame attempt at a Santa Claus novelty tune in the late 80s. The lyrics of Cheer are a cynical (surprise!) look at the celebration but I wanted the music to be a-seasonal. The structure and the changes are much like a 1040s pop song and the Ab key signature makes it a challenging but fun improvisational outing.

Off the Cuff . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improvisation)
". . . Improvisation can be thought of as an "on the spot" or "off the cuff" spontaneous moment of sudden inventiveness that can just come to mind, body and spirit as an inspiration. No preparation or training is needed. However, improvisation in any life or art form, can occur more often if it is practiced as a way of encouraging creative behavior. That practice includes learning to use one's intuition, as well as learning a technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within the domain in which one is improvising. . . in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment and inner feelings. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. . .Techniques of improvisation are widely used in training for performing arts or entertainment; for example, music, theatre and dance. . . The simple act of speaking requires a good deal of improvisation because the mind is addressing its own thought and creating its unrehearsed delivery in words, sounds and gestures, forming unpredictable statements that feed back into the thought process (the performer as listener), creating an enriched process that is not unlike instantaneous composition . . ."

Letters . . .

. . . chords or notes ?. . .

NOTES! . . . actually.  They are the notes forming intro and the turnaround, which fuels this medium-slow tempo tune, devised to promote improvisation on the descending chord pattern of D minor, C major and B flat major.  The pattern allows a formidable amount of freedom yet restricts just enough to encourage melody within the structure.

Developing . . .

Wisdom
©2015 Raymond M. Jozwiak

This piece is evidence of my musical fascination with modal improvisation, although technically it is not modal.  It is, in fact, a simple pattern of 13th chords. It is very similar to IMPRESSIVE (from Another Shot ©2010 Raymond M. Jozwiak) but while the latter leaned more toward the modal, two consecutive chromatic 13th chords only,  WISDOM actually contains six, arranged in a slightly more complex pattern.  And for some inexplicable reason, 13ths seem to require a 3/8 or 6/8 time signature for me. Note even the melodies of these musical cousins contain a family resemblance, although my WISDOM is not yet complete.

Can one's wisdom EVER be complete?

Wednesday . . .

(from http://blog.dictionary.com/wednesday/)
". . . The name Wednesday derives from two mighty but distinct gods. The Old English word for Wednesday indicates that the day was named for the Germanic god Woden. In Romance languages, the name is derived from the Roman god Mercury. (For example, Wednesday is mercredi in French and miercuri in Romanian.) Woden (also known as Odin) and Mercury have  been associated since Scandinavian and Roman cultures crossed paths. Under Woden’s supervision, the earth and sky were created from the dead body of a giant named Ymir. Woden also created the first man and woman from an ash tree and an alder. As if fashioning the human race wasn’t enough, Woden also established the laws of the universe. . ."

But musically speaking, for now I'll just call it . . .

Black & White. . .

(from wikipedia.com)
Black-and-white as a description may be considered a misnomer in that the images are not ordinarily starkly contrasted black and white but combine black and white in a continuum producing a range of shades of gray. Further, many prints, especially those produced earlier in the development of photography, were in sepia (mainly for archival stability), which yielded richer, more subtle shading than reproductions in plain black-and-white. Color photography provides a much greater range of shade, but part of the appeal of black and white photography is its more subdued monochromatic character.

Black & White (then Back) is also the name of my latest solo piano release and describes the range of colors experienced by my very own fingers on the keyboard as I attempt to express my innermost emotions through acoustic grand pianoforte compositions and improvisations, captured digitally and included in this collection.

See what I mean . . .
