Ohh!!! . . .

. . . zone . . .

(from http://www.factcheck.org/2011/10/clearing-the-air-on-perrys-record/)
". . . (former Texas Governer and current U.S. Energy secretary-Rick) Perry has cultivated an adversarial relationship with the Environmental Protection Agency going all the way back to his days as Texas’ agriculture commissioner. Perry contends the “mandates and overreaching regulation” of the EPA cost Texas jobs and that Texas is better equipped to tackle air quality issues than “a centralized, all-knowing, one-size-fits-all federal government.” And, he says, Texas has done just fine cleaning up its air without the EPA’s interference (a claim many environmental groups in Texas contest). . . One of Perry’s most heated battles with the EPA is over global warming and the Obama administration’s use of the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from the state’s many oil refineries and power plants. Perry is skeptical of scientists who say global warming is a man-made problem. Tensions reached a boil when, earlier this year, the EPA announced it was taking over control of the greenhouse gas permitting in Texas because the state refused to implement its rules. Texas has led several other states in a legal challenge to the global warming regulations. The issue is still pending in federal court. . ."

. . . alternative . . .

(from http://www.newagenomad.com/p/van-dwelling-page.html)
". . . The name that friends and family assigned to my home on wheels. It's small and cheap and gets about 3 times the gas mileage as the big rigs.  Also allows me to go where a lot of others can't do to its small size. Yet still contains all the necessities I need. My monthly expenses our around $125 a month for High speed Internet, Phone, Netflix, Insurance, and tabs. Gas is dependent on travel winter months are spent in the warm southwest hardly moving at all. Summer months are spent at cool higher elevation and moves are more frequent. Then theres food, wobbly pops, water, and entertainment. Entertainment is usually free provided who your neighbors at the moment. Only had to pay for water once in 3 years and it was 50 cents for 40 gallons. . ."

Were The Tables . . .

. . . turned. . .
. . . how would we, in America, handle such wealth? . . .

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/business/norway-everyone-now-millionaire-thanks-oil-2D11884040)
Everyone in Norway became a theoretical millionaire on Wednesday in a milestone for the world's biggest sovereign wealth fund that has ballooned thanks to high oil and gas prices.

A preliminary counter on the website of the central bank, which manages the fund, rose to 5.11 trillion crowns ($828.66 billion), fractionally more than a million times Norway's most recent official population estimate of 5,096,300.

It was the first time it reached the equivalent of a million crowns each, central bank spokesman Thomas Sevang said.

Set up in 1990, the fund owns around 1 percent of the world's stocks, as well as bonds and real estate from London to Boston, making the Nordic nation an exception when others are struggling under a mountain of debts.

Not that Norwegians will be able to access or spend the money, squirreled away for a rainy day for them and future generations. Norway has resisted the temptation to splurge all the windfall since striking oil in the North Sea in 1969.

Norway has sought to avoid the boom and bust cycle by investing the cash abroad, rather than at home. Governments can spend 4 percent of the fund in Norway each year, slightly more than the annual return on investment. . .

Heard . . .

 . . . about this?. . .

. . . I hadn't . . . until now . . .

Assumption Parish, 45 miles south of Baton Rouge is home to fishermen, farmers and the oil and gas industry. In the spring of 2012, residents noticed what appeared to be boiling water in the bayou.  Small earthquakes followed.  State officials determined the bubbles were from a single, natural gas source such as a pipeline.

In early August, near a small residential community in Assumption, the earth beneath the Bayou Corne gave way resulting in a large, deep sinkhole filled with water, underground brines, oil and natural gas.  At its largest, the hole covered about 8 acres.

300 residents were evacuated as the governor declared a statewide emergency. Geologists have never seen anything like it before.

Texas Brine, a drilling and storage firm is believed to be at the root of the sinkhole phenomenon in Assumption.  The firm's salt cavern, used to produce salty brine which is needed to manufacture chloride and chemicals for plastics, collapsed from the side and filled with rock, oil and gas from deposits around the salt formation.  The pressure caused a "frack out", much like "fracking" (hydraulic fracturing) done by the oil industry to obtain natural gas from underground.

Texas Brine claimed the cavern collapsed from natural seismic activity and not the reverse, as determined by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and has not officially taken responsibility. USGS, nor the world, has ever faced such a situation and there is no clear path for cleaning it up.  No one is sure when, or even if, residents will be allowed to return to their homes.

Texas Brine is now under state orders to pay a weekly $875 stipend to each evacuated household.  The firm has also set up flaming torches to vent the natural gas contaminating the aquifer.

Froggin'. . .

. . . friggin'. . . fracking!

(from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-14/fracking-hazards-obscured-in-failure-to-disclose-wells.html)
". . . Homeowners in Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming have complained that their well water was contaminated with chemicals or methane gas from nearby frack jobs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last year linked the method to contaminated drinking water in Pavillion, Wyoming; the agency is now retesting some of those findings. The EPA has little authority to regulate fracking; Congress in 2005 stripped it of most such power.

States have responded in various ways. Pennsylvania officials require that companies disclose chemicals within 60 days after fracking. New York has a moratorium on the practice until its environmental impact can be determined. Vermont has banned it outright. Texas began mandating disclosure of fracking chemicals this year, after officials determined that operators were voluntarily reporting about half their fracked wells to FracFocus, according to the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil and gas wells.

Oil and gas executives say the FracFocus website helps eliminate the need for any new federal oversight that might unify the regulatory approach. . . "

Might UNIFY the regulatory approach???!!!!!!!
