Dealing . . .

. . . with a bully. . .

(from http://www.gustrength.com/critical-thinking:how-to-win-an-argument)
". . . (Bruce) Lee is on a boat traveling from Hong Kong to an island where there is a hardcore martial arts tournament run by this evil rogue Shaolin monk, Han. . . Also on the boat is a New Zealand martial artist who is trying to intimidate the other passengers…his likely opponents. Like any true bully, he picks on the boat's smaller crew members. While this is going on, Lee is peacefully standing at the rail, looking out at the water. . . So the bully, after kicking a steward into the water, turns on Lee and tries to get him to fight. Which Lee ignores…further enraging the bully. But he's also a little baffled. . . He asks Lee what his style is and Lee replies that you could call it the art of fighting without fighting. . . "The art of fighting…without fighting?," replies the bully. "Show me some of it." . . Lee can see that he will have to do something to get this guy off his back so he agrees. But he suggests that they could use more room to fight and points out a nearby island with a sandy beach. ,. . "We can take this boat," says Lee. . . The bully eagerly accepts the invitation and steps into the boat while Lee unties the rope. As soon as the New Zealander is in the boat Lee begins to play out the line and sets the bully adrift behind the boat, stranding him there for the remainder of the trip. . ."

Support . . .

Dear Mr. Jozwiak,

. . . in the face of the President Trump’s incredibly disconcerting behavior, we must fight for our values as a nation. I have long believed that good leaders are humble, not haughty. Good leaders have the courage to stay out of step when everyone else is marching to the wrong tune. Good leaders don’t divide people, they unite them. They don’t build walls, they build history. Moreover, good leaders remember the Golden Rule: to treat others as they would wish to be treated. If President Trump wants to be a president for all Americans—as he promised on election night—he would do well to adhere to this. But whether he does so or not, we must do everything we can to ensure that all Americans receive equal protection under the law. Moving forward, I will continue to work to hold both the President and his Administration accountable for something the American people expect and deserve: a federal government run with transparency and integrity. . .

With best personal regards, I am,

Sincerely,

Tom Carper
United States Senator

Evidence . . .

". . . But there’s no evidence that more guns can reduce gun violence broadly, said Daniel Webster, Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. . . “As a researcher, that drives me nuts,” he said, explaining that guns increase the number of everyday moments or interactions — like bar fights, road rage, suicidal thoughts — that turn lethal. “The more guns are readily available, the more shootings occur. That’s what the latest research shows. When states make it more easy for people to carry guns, the number of incidents of aggravated assault grows.”. . . According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 93 people die a day from gun violence, including 32 murders and 58 suicides. A study out of Stanford Law School analyzed crime data from 1977 to 2014 and found that areas with more relaxed “right-to-carry” gun laws saw higher rates of violent crime. . . “If more guns made America safer, we’d be an awfully safe place,” said University of California Los Angeles law professor Adam Winkler, author of "Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America.". . ."

Fight. . .

. . . for your right. . .

Those Chesneyans.

When Kenny Chesney comes to town, rest assured there will be party. At Pittsburg's Heinz Field, literal boatloads of fans arrive days before the performance, tying up along the river posing a potential hazard. Meantime, on land, parking is $40 a car and police abound.   This does not deter over-the-top behavior who party long and hard for many hours before the show. Garbage and human waste abound.

The recent show in Pittsburgh was notable.  Of 50,000 fans, about 75 people were arrested and 45 required medical attention
