It Never . . .

". . . On Friday, when asked why he doesn’t vigorously criticize Kim's human rights record, Trump expressed an interest in preventing a nuclear attack. . . "You know why? I don't want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family," he said. . ."

That 'interest' or 'concern' never entered his mind when he called Kim 'Rocket Man'.

I'm Dreaming . . .

. . . of a quality manual when I should be getting some rest. The visions include no sugarplums but do have a lot of copying and pasting, the bureaucracy fighting nobly to prevent substantial sleep. Flowers bloom and birds sing as the refuse trucks whine in the dawn and my fitful nap continues. But better things lie ahead with good friends and family in nice places where foamy waves lap at the sandy coast and blue skies meet the aqua expanse in my (nearer than I think) future . . . and music. . .

History . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/tv/murphy-brown-returns-20-years-later-culture-feminist-icon-helped-n841366)
". . . “Murphy Brown” fired back in its fifth-season premiere, depicting its protagonist listening to the (Dan Quayle) speech and musing: “Perhaps it’s time for the vice president to expand his definition and recognize that, whether by choice or circumstance, families come in all shapes and sizes.”. . . The feud between Quayle and Bergen’s primetime alter ego dominated headlines at the height of President George H.W. Bush’s re-election campaign. Bush went on to lose the election to Bill Clinton that November. . . “It’s hard to overstate how huge a deal that was in American culture,” Press said. “[Quayle] demonized a fictional character for being representative of the downfall of American family values!”. . ."

True. . .

. . . colors . . .

. . . when I finally escaped what I perceived to be the 'land of make-believe' and graduated from college, I told practically everyone I knew that I would never go back to school, ever.  About five years later, I went back to school. Call it maturity. Call it wisdom. Call it pragmatism, but I re-entered the world of academia in pursuit of a Masters Degree (in business administration, in fact) about five years later. Never regretted it. I began to see the beauty in higher education.  I also realized that I actually have a desire to learn, something I still possess. But being involved in business, since the 'music' business is so frequently insufficient to provide adequately for a family, my higher education was quite useful. But academically speaking, an irony that became evident during this period is that no matter how much someone (someone being a 'worker' within an organization) complains about the antics of a superior (within their own workplace), when (and IF) they attain a position of supervision or management, they actually engage in conduct far more extreme than those of which they originally complained.  In other words, they show their true colors . . .

Good . . .

. . . news. . .

". . . Florida beachgoers banded together Saturday to save a family from drowning. Roberta Ursrey and her family were at Panama City Beach when she noticed her sons were too far from shore, The Panama City News Herald reported. The boys were screaming, so Ursrey and her relatives swam to them, but became trapped in a rip current. . .Thankfully beachgoers noticed the family struggling and banded together to form an 80-person human chain, AP reported. . . Starting with the children, the rescuers towed the swimmers along the human chain and pulled them to shore, the newspaper reported. . . “I am so grateful,” Ursrey told The Panama City News Herald. “These people were God’s angels that were in the right place at the right time. I owe my life and my family’s life to them. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”. . ."

Family . . .

. . . values??

(Bernie Sanders on Republican family values)
". . . When a mother has a baby and is unable to spend time with that child during the first weeks and months of his or her life, that is not a family value.

When a wife is diagnosed with cancer and a husband cannot get time off of work to take care of her, that is not a family value.

When a mother is forced to send her sick child to school because she cannot afford to stay home with her, that is not a family value.

When a husband, wife, and kids, during the course of an entire year, are unable to spend any time together on vacation, that is not a family value.

The Republican agenda for families is really an attack on everything that a family is supposed to stand for.

When it comes to basic workplace protections and family benefits, workers in every other major industrialized country in the world get a better deal than workers in the United States. That should be an embarrassment to anyone who wants to talk seriously about family values in this country. . ."

Fat-ig-yew. . .

. . . hey man!! . . . it happens!!!

It's not that I feel inadequate or sub-par for getting tired.  There are only twenty-four hours in a day you know.  So you sleep for five or six hours, you get up good and early for the upcoming adventure of a day, you put in a solid  seven-to-eight hours at the office, you commute, you prepare (or assist in preparing) a reasonably exciting and delectable evening meal with a little family time, you consume the aforesaid exciting and delectable (blah, blah, blah) thing in a relatively relaxed manner because, as you may well know, the speedy consumption of your food does not aid digestion, weight management or your general health, then you may have thirty to ninety (depending upon the complexity of the preparation of the exciting and [blah, blah, blah, blah- YOU KNOW!] ) for a favorite hobby, pass-time, television show - OR YOUR PASSION!!!,  and then it's time for the sleep-time ablutions and ceremony before you can finally jump into bed for another restful five to six . . . and then . . .

DO IT AGAIN!!!

Bah . . .

. . . ancient  humbug!

Saturnalia was a public holiday celebrated around December 25 in the family home long before the common era and the cult of Saturn survived in Mediterranean locale such as the province of Constantine, somewhere in present day Algeria until the third century CE. The Saturnalia celebrations were annual events well into a century after Constantine's, the first 'Christian' Emperor's reign.  During its popularity, the length of the celebration ranged from two to seven days.

The earliest known reference to December 25th commemorating the birth of Christ is in the Roman Philocalian calendar of 354 CE. The same day also appears in the Philocalian calendar as a Roman civil holiday honoring the cult of sol invicta, originating in Syria and relating to the cult of Mithras.

Buying gifts to celebrate Christmas is steeped in tradition, dating to the 1820s when newspapers began to advertise items for Christmas presents.

Handsome. . .

. . . but excessive? . . .

(from http://www.newportmansions.org/explore/kingscote)
Kingscote is a landmark of the Gothic Revival style in American architecture. Its appearance in Newport marked the beginning of the "cottage boom" that would distinguish the town as a veritable laboratory for the design of picturesque houses throughout the 19th century.

In 1839 Southern planter George Noble Jones commissioned architect Richard Upjohn to design a summer cottage along a country road, known as Bellevue Avenue, on the outskirts of town. Upjohn created a highly original "cottage orne," or ornamental cottage, in the Gothic Revival style. The general effect was romantic- a fanciful composition of towers, windows, Gothic arches and Kingscote dining roomporch roofs inspired by medieval tournament tents.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Jones family left Newport never to return, and the house was sold in 1864 to China Trade merchant William Henry King. His nephew David took over the house in 1876, and several years later decided to enlarge Kingscote. He engaged the firm of McKim, Mead and White to make the renovations, including the new dining room. The room combines Colonial American details with exotic ornament - reflecting the architects' interest in combining eastern and western motifs. The innovative use of materials was also important, such as cork tiles as a covering for the wall frieze and ceiling, and an early installation of opalescent glass bricks by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The house remained in the King family until 1972, when the last descendant left it to the Preservation Society. Today, Kingscote is a National Historic Landmark. It is a rare example of a Gothic Revival house and landscape setting preserved intact with original family collections.
