My Head . . .

. . . or more specifically, the contents therein, provide me with a wealth of entertainment. Musing on the past, present, life, death, the world, the country . . . it's endless.  Today, for some reason, the past took front and center, and monopolized the activities of the grey matter for a portion of the early morning hours. The past and my place in it and the person I was in that place back then would pretty much sum it up. I was timid, unsure. So many personalities come to mind; personalities that I envied for your sheer joy, their fearlessness, their humor and their confidence. Then I wonder, where are they now?  What are they like now?  Are they still joyful, fearless, funny and confident?

GOOGLE? . . .

Fantasy . . .

. . . or dishonesty?. . .

Dear Wayne,
Just writing to say hello and to impart a smidgen of counsel, for what it's worth. Granted, your style of music and entertainment have never quite been my proverbial 'cup of tea' and I also allow that in terms of success, which in this context I will define narrowly as 'amount of money earned from practicing music as a livelihood' (and ONLY that), you have head and shoulders over most of us, accomplished a not insubstantial amount. But just between us I must say that I, for one, perceive a note of dishonesty in the promotional material for your recent show in Baltimore, MD.  I well understand the concepts of image, youth, vitality, machismo.  It does appear, however, that you fail to grasp the subtlety of the concept of honesty. When WAS this photo taken - 30 maybe 35 years ago? Wayne! . . . Baby! . . . What were you thinkin'?

May I suggest that since fantasy appears to be the underlying theme in your promotional efforts these days, why don't you simply use the suggested image I have posted here in your advertising from now on?

Purposes. . .

. . . of music . . .

(from http://www.mediapocalypse.com/what-the-origin-of-music-reveals-about-its-true-meaning/)
". . . Entertainment is surely one of the purposes of music. To be fair, most people do realize it’s not the only purpose. Live performances can and have united broad swaths of society in ways that transcend simple amusement. Music can be used as therapy or as a call to action. Songs can move us to tears or lift our spirits far beyond a simple diversion. The right song played at the right time is not just a part of one’s music library, but a part of one’s soul. And it would be hard to argue the entertainment value of the funeral dirge or the sonic torture of Iraqi prisoners of war. Clearly, there is something more to music than mere entertainment. . ."

So Sam, . . .

(from Jay's recent post on the OHOMusic Facebook page . . . )
Jay: "So Sam, Have you aired the (WTMD 05/15/14) OHO interview? If not, do you intend to air it? Inquiring minds want to know. I won't be hurt if you have changed your mind; but I would be disappointed that what was discussed did not reach the level of interest or entertainment of some of your other guests, the bar having been set rather low, not by you; but by them."

Sam: "Hey Jay, I haven't aired it yet -- my wife and I had our second child a couple months ago and I'm digging out from a mountain of work right now. I do intend to air it -- I'll let you know!"

Jay: "OK, thanks, congratulations and best wishes, double trouble & 2x the fun!!!"

Odd . . .

. . . how a novel, comic piece of child-like, simple entertainment from the past can actually remind you of exactly what is  happening to you and your mental faculties (many, many years later)  in the present . . .

(Found this stuff while pondering some entertainment that I enjoyed as a child and wondering what some of these people are doing now.)

Go Figure. . .

I watched WAAAYYYY too much television than is healthy when I was a child.  Now I barely have time to watch ANY!   And I don't feel like I'm missing much.  Yes, there are some clever, cutting edge television programs on these days.  Matter of fact, the sheer number of choices of television entertainment available today is mind boggling compared with that of my youth, yet I watched it like a hawk then, but avoid it like the plague now.

Go figure. . .
BTW- the photo above is Rose Marie, co-star of the Dick Van Dyke Show (one among MANY other shows of the era) which ran from 1961 through 1966 and which, one of my good friends and musical OHO compatriots feels, sounds (or at least formerly sounded) very much like the lead vocalist in this legendary prog-rock ensemble, theory with which I can hardly argue . . .

Perpending. . .

When I was pre-adolescent, watching with wonder the antics, joy, humor and sensuality of the beautiful young people in such entertainment offerings as the 'Beach Party' and Elvis Presley movies and television fare like 'The Patty Duke Show' and even 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis' (in syndication, mind you, NOT the original run).

I recall vividly thinking that 'this is what it's like to be a teenager'.  Your biggest worries would be who to ask to the prom and should you tell your Dad that you scraped the car on the door frame of the garage last Tuesday.

I learned later that life would simply not be quite that romantically glorious nor as blissfully simple.

And, in my 20/20 hindsight, I'm actually GLAD that it isn't!

Weird. . .

As if the real news isn't weird (and depressing) enough, the satire is even goofier.  And adding insult to injury, many people think it's real upon first glance.  Things like:

-Santorum's divorce
-Teen who only texts and rolls eyes to be euthanized
-School of arts seeks to transform boys and girls into insufferable young men and women
-ORCA Act ensures all food and medicine to be 100% GMO within four years

The internet is a wonderful thing.  It makes research and entertainment easy and convenient.
Just be careful not to confuse the entertainment with the research.

Memories. . .

. . . music. . . etc. . .
Pondering two aspects of music swirling around in my mind when I switched rails to the other and discovered a substantial distance between the two extremities.

The video "Thou Shalt Always Kill" by Scroobius Pip (see Pianogonzology, March 19, 2013) continues to fascinate, as does the artistry and person of the performer, David Peter Meads.  Hip-hop music done with an English accent (the hiphop-pronunciations in this dialect are another topic altogether), the Hasidim-style beard, baseball cap, thrift shop suit and twinkling eyes - not to mention truly clever lyrics - make the entire prospect unusual to me, although maybe not to young, British, hip-hop fans.  The result is a very enjoyable entertainment.

The other end of the spectrum that I was pondering? . . .
