Good . . .

. . . Things????!!!!

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2018/12/14/is-there-anything-trump-touches-that-isnt-corrupt/?fbclid=IwAR04ICqGKb_Tcc9IeDV_zvciOvg30K8FG-ebBwvrtc9WMnJWGaZU0V-R1Ko&noredirect=on&utm_term=.a5e09b861827)
*Trump’s campaign is under investigation for possible hidden dealings with Russia and a possible conspiracy to violate campaign-finance laws.
*Trump's administration has been beset with a shocking number of scandals of various types.
*Trump is currently being sued for allegedly violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause, since foreign governments are directing money his way by booking large numbers of rooms and holding events at his properties.
*The attorney general of New York is seeking to have the Trump Foundation dissolved, citing a pattern of "persistently illegal conduct" that made the foundation little more than a scam devoted to self-dealing.
*In October, it was revealed in an exhaustively documented investigation that Trump, his father and his siblings engaged in a conspiracy to commit tax fraud on an absolutely epic scale, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.
*Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump repeatedly misled buyers and investors about properties they were developing in order to acquire funding and pump up sales.

Old . . .

. . . story. . .
. . . but amusing . . . (maybe Warren should help someone who actually NEEDS it)

(from http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/warren-buffett-admires-lebron-james-business-sense-172013145--nba.html)
". . . Politics makes for strange bedfellows, and money makes for even stranger ones. Witness: the budding lovefest between LeBron James, 27-year-old multimillionaire and best player in the NBA, and Warren Buffett, 82-year-old multibillionaire and second-richest man in the country.

James is coming off a year in which he achieved every possible height in his chosen profession: MVP, championship, Olympic gold medal. But he's always had his eye on larger prizes. He's long wanted to join Tiger Woods and Michael Schumacher as billion-dollar athletes, and he's in the process of collecting a team that might just make that happen.

And Warren Buffett is a solid first-round draft pick for that team. Buffett recently told the Miami Herald that he believes LeBron has what it takes to succeed in the boardroom.

"You have to get to know him," Buffett said. "LeBron's not initially really talkative. He's savvy. He's smart about financial matters. It's amazing to me the maturity he exhibits. I know that if I had been famous at that age, I would have had trouble keeping my feet on the ground." (What kind of a vertical leap do you figure Buffett has?) . . .  ground." (What kind of a vertical leap do you figure Buffett has?) . . .But his bank account is doing just fine. He earned $53 million in 2011, according to Forbes, $40 million of which came from endorsements. That puts him behind only Woods and boxers Floyd Maywether and Manny Pacquiao. But it's still a long way from there to a billion, and that's where Buffett and others come in. James will be looking to maximize sponsor opportunities, and at the moment he's got his choice of high-profile companies, such as Nike, Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Samsung. . ."

Good. . .

. . . for you. . .

Do we really know what is good for us?  Just watched a flick from '96 called Citizen Ruth which asks that, among other questions.   I remember in my early working days encountering homeless people downtown and wondering if my giving them a dollar was actually a benefit to them.  Then there was an episode of LA Law (I think), where one of the attorneys took an interest in a homeless woman and went to great pains to get her involved in a program that would help her become a stable, self- sustaining citizen.  Turns out the woman did not want the help of the attorney at all.  She merely wanted cash to satisfy her immediate need or desire, no matter how temporary, superficial or unhealthy.  She was, in the end, quite content with her homeless lifestyle.

Ruth, in the movie, was similar.  And while she became involved with people who, unlike the attorney, offered her help under the guise of beneficence but were merely using her situation to further their own (political, in this case) agenda.

How true to life.

Now that. . .

. . . the election is finally over.  One estimate said the presidential campaigns costs a combined total of $2.5 billion.  I don't know why people brush off billions whenever I ask about saving such sums as the campaign expense.  I know the national deficit is in trillions but, as Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen said, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money."  The campaign expenses are particularly irksome to me because they are purely showbiz.  Dispensing facts to the general public in print or online, for example, would be infinitely less expensive than the hateful and reality-challenged television ads the two major candidates ran.

And though we are left with a president who exhibits some leaning toward integrity, albeit not fully realized when applicable to the U.S. (and world also, for that matter) citizenry, and not with one who not only ignores the needs of the preponderance of the planet's population but also lives in a fantasy, pre-scientific world landscaped with hundred-dollar bills (or are they thousands?) - I don't really think all our problems are solved.

Which leads me back to Rocky (Anderson, that is):  ". . . The government is shafting the people of this country. It doesn’t matter which party is the majority, they’re all feeding at the same trough of special interest money and we, the American people, are suffering from it. We’re in the midst of a new Gilded Age, with a greater disparity between income and wealth since the 1920s and the highest poverty rates since 1965. It’s as if all the gains of the war on poverty have disappeared. That along with our outrageous healthcare system, including Obamacare, results in incredible suffering, including the loss of tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives every year. . ."

So even though the election is over, there is still much work to be done.
