Sound . . .

. . . like some U.S. president that has been in the news lately?

(from The Three Christs of Ypsilanti by Milton Rokeach)
". . . As Anna Freud writes:  This mechanism belongs to a normal phase in the development of the infantile ego, but, if it recurs in later life, it indicates and advanced stage of psychic disease....Under the influence of shock ... it denies the facts and substitutes for the unbearable reality some agreeable delusion. . ."

Actually . . .

. . . Murray, about the statues . . .

In rebuttal to https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/aug/19/naked-donald-trump-statue-satire-ageist-body-shaming . . .

Regarding the five Trump statues, so let met get this straight, you feel 'NB' (a genteel designation based upon your own) is not good social critique through art because it gives way to "blind hatred that obscures their intent." Seems to me that any intelligent, fact-respecting citizen who has paid any attention to 'DT' (maintaining the MO), and how could they or any other citizens NOT-  thanks to all the free media attention he has managed,  has formed an opinion of DT that hovers somewhere in the 'don't care-for' range, and hopefully not quite as extreme as true hate. But that opinion is anything but 'blind.'

You say that the work's "slumpy, distended belly, withered buttocks and sagging pectorals, crosses callously into generalized ageism and body-shaming."  I do believe that even DT himself might characterize that description as a bit too "politically correct." My aging, a-Phelpsian body would certainly make a poor cover for Playgirl (does that still exist?), but I am far from offended by, don't forget that DT HIMSELF invited visions of his 'man-parts' into our consciousness at one of the Republican primary debates, the NB sculptures.

Let's face it, this man is seriously (I think) running for the presidency of the United States of America. He is a television 'personality' by definition. He purposely taunts persons and peoples with all the forethought of a corner-bar drunk. He is a free target. He belongs to the public. I, for one, think the sculptures were quite funny and clever.  Maybe the pieces are not Da Vincis, but I truly suspect the artist was never under any such delusion.

Entertaining. . .

No one could make discussion of religion as entertaining as Christopher Hitchens. . .

(from JON WIENER, TRUTHDIG, CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS at http://old.richarddawkins.net/articles/1249)
". . . Wiener: Let's talk about the U.S. Polls show that 94 per cent of Americans believe in God, and 89 per cent believe in heaven; of those, three-fourths think they will go to heaven, but only 2 per cent think they will go to hell. This seems laughable, but what's the harm in people believing they will go to heaven after they die—and see their mothers there?

Hitchens: All you have to do is promise them 72 virgins, and they'll kill to get there. That's what's wrong with it, along with the fact that it's a solipsistic delusion. And the spreading of delusion in the end isn't a good thing, because credulous and deluded people are easy to exploit. People arise who are aware of that fact.

If belief in heaven was private, like the tooth fairy, I'd say fine. But tooth fairy supporters don't come around to your house and try to convert you. They don't try to teach your children stultifying pseudo-science in school. They don't try to prevent access to contraception. The religious won't leave us alone. These are not just private delusions, they're ones they want to inflict on other people.

If religion were true, there would be no need for politics; you'd only need to have faith.

Wiener: The final killer argument of your critics is that Hitler and Stalin were not religious. The worst crimes of the 20th century did not have a religious basis. They came from political ideology.

Hitchens: That's easy. Hitler never abandoned Christianity and recommends Catholicism quite highly in "Mein Kampf." Fascism, as distinct from National Socialism, was in effect a Catholic movement.

Wiener: What about Stalin? He wasn't religious.

Hitchens: Stalin—easier still. For hundreds of years, millions of Russians had been told the head of state should be a man close to God, the czar, who was head of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as absolute despot. If you're Stalin, you shouldn't be in the dictatorship business if you can't exploit the pool of servility and docility that's ready-made for you. The task of atheists is to raise people above that level of servility and credulity. No society has gone the way of gulags or concentration camps by following the path of Spinoza and Einstein and Jefferson and Thomas Paine. . . "

I'm not . . .

. . . envious. . .

. . . who me. . . NAHHH!!!!

I don't want to be a pop star. . . well. . . maybe I do . . . maybe I STILL do. . .

. . . well, mayBE I AM ENVIOUS!!  I ALWAYS DID WANT TO BECOME A POP STAR!!!
Who didn't?   Didn't You!!???

Well, let's be real.  I am who I am, 55 years old, married with three grown children, employed full-time (in a field OTHER than music), a homeowner, taxpayer, American citizen, community member, concerned citizen of planet earth in 2013.  I suffer no delusions.  Although I would love to achieve some modicum*

*mod·i·cum

/ˈmädikəm/
Noun
A small quantity of a particular thing, esp. something considered desirable or valuable.

Synonyms
trace

of success with my original music, I am nothing but realistic about what my music is, how big a market that it may have, and just how lucrative that modicum could be.

But why does it still trouble me, (to the point of jealousy??? . . . not absolutely, honestly or truly to that point) but still, there's a twinge when I see (especially when I hear) some adolescent (particularly male, yet not exclusively) heartthrob pouting into the camera like a doe in the headlights and belting out inane lyrics to a technologically perfect yet emotionally vapid dance beat that's been perfectly produced to to the point of boredom. . .

. . . DAMN. . . I wish I could have been a Pop Star!
