Wild . . .

. . . conjures up images of jungles, exotic animals, dense forests, aarid plains, living off the land hunting, foraging etc. The notion of 'wild' evokes a certain romanticism; a state of inaccessible, remote disconnection from a conventional, acceptable behavior which is somehow closer to our natural state. Wildness is a desirable, admirable condition for which the common man frequently strives yet rarely attains. Paraphrasing a great prophet, many are drawn but few are authentically WILD. . .

Pack In The Pachyderms . . .

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ringling-bros-barnum-bailey-circus-phasing-out-elephant-acts-n317836)
". . . The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is stamping out its famous elephant acts.
Feld Entertainment, the company that owns the circus, said Thursday that it will phase out the 13 elephants from its traveling circus performances. By 2018, the popular pachyderms will be relocated to a conservation center in central Florida, where they will join the rest of the Ringling Bros. herd of more than 40 elephants. It will take "months" to renovate the facility and make more room for the animals. . .The Humane Society of the United States, which was among the animal rights groups battling Ringling Bros., called the surprise move "startling and tremendously exciting."
"We've said all along that the public won't tolerate the abuse of elephants with sharp bullhooks to get them to perform tricks or the constant chaining of these highly intelligent and mobile animals," Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle said in a statement. "There are better forms of entertainment that don't harm animals." The Feld family said they would continue to "preserve the esteemed traditions" of its 145-year-old three-ring circus — dubbed "The Greatest Show on Earth" — with the use of tigers, lions, horses, dogs and camels. . ."

Now we'll have to be content listening to Sun Ra's music . . . (don't get it?)

Disappointed? . . .

(from: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-world-didnt-end-2012-12#ixzz2FgYECchZ)
". . . Well, pinch me if I'm dreaming, but it looks like we're still here.  Which means those crazy theories were wrong. Earth was NOT sucked into a giant plack(sic) hole. The sun did NOT enter an apocalyptic "galactic phase." Solar flares did NOT reverse the poles and fry us. Earth did not smash into a giant planet called Nibiru. . . "

Of our the prospect that the end of the Mayan calendar was to the the apocalypse was a view only held by certain few mis-interpreters.  But doomsday is certainly a lot more fun that simply turning the page of the calendar.

We here at the homestead had our own theories.  One family member had hoped that either aliens from another planet would be visiting us.  Or in the case that was not to be, possibly animals would begin speaking in our own language.

Another reluctantly admitted that she hoped a certain high-ranking Washington DC personality would effectively self-destruct.

Myself well, I really didn't formulate anything too specific.  The dawning of a new cycle does spark the imagination.  But as for wishes of world peace, loving and caring for our fellow man, the dawning of the age of Aquarius were a little to good to be realistic.  And besides, such things require a long, slow period of development and cannot simply and magically appear overnight. . . from the rubble of our present situation. . . as it were. . .

It's me

From the Cool Cosmos website. . .

"Warm-blooded creatures, like mammals and birds, try to keep the inside of their bodies at a constant temperature. They do this by generating their own heat when they are in a cooler environment, and by cooling themselves when they are in a hotter environment. To generate heat, warm-blooded animals convert the food that they eat into energy. They have to eat a lot of food, compared with cold-blooded animals, to maintain a constant body temperature. Only a small amount of the food that a warm-blooded animal eats is converted into body mass. The rest is used to fuel a constant body temperature.

Cold-blooded creatures take on the temperature of their surroundings. They are hot when their environment is hot and cold when their environment is cold. In hot environments, cold-blooded animals can have blood that is much warmer than warm-blooded animals. Cold-blooded animals are much more active in warm environments and are very sluggish in cold environments. This is because their muscle activity depends on chemical reactions which run quickly when it is hot and slowly when it is cold. A cold-blooded animal can convert much more of its food into body mass compared with a warm-blooded animal."

My 'cold-blooded'-ness is not in relation to my attitude to others. The operative words here are "sluggish in cold environments."
Nuff said.
